A wet ring at the rod seal (the top of the cylinder where the piston rod exits) means the primary seal is worn and a seal kit rebuild is likely the fix. A weeping seam midway on the cylinder body means the cylinder body itself has developed a stress crack or manufacturing defect, and full cylinder replacement is required. Fluid escaping at the base fitting means the port seal or hose fitting is loose and can often be fixed with a torque check and new O-ring.

These kits include the rod seal, wiper seal, O-rings, and often the piston seal, and they’re designed to be installed by a mechanically inclined owner or by a lift tech in a couple of hours. Forward and older SVI cylinders are also generally supported. Cheap import brands, especially those that rebrand every few years, typically don’t sell seal kits at all, and the rebuild path isn’t available.
For a corridor race team, brand support at the rebuild stage is where the initial purchase decision pays off years later. If the lift is only in its sixth or seventh year of life, rebuild extends useful life economically and you probably get another one or two rebuilds before the cylinder body itself fails. If the lift is fifteen or more years old, replacement makes more sense because the cylinder is at the end of its overall design life and you avoid paying for a rebuild that fails again in three years. What the Rebuild Actually Looks Like
Here’s the walk-through if you or your lift tech is doing the rebuild in your race shop. Lower the lift fully and depressurize the hydraulic system. Disconnect the hydraulic line at the cylinder base. Remove the cylinder from the arm assembly (or in some designs, remove the cylinder cap while it’s still installed). Extract the piston and rod assembly. Remove old seals, clean the bore and the rod thoroughly, inspect for scoring or pitting. If the rod or bore shows scoring, the cylinder needs replacement, not just rebuild.
Install new seals in the correct orientation, lubricate them lightly with hydraulic fluid, reassemble the cylinder, refit to the lift, reconnect the hydraulic line, refill and bleed the system. Cycle the lift several times and verify no seep. Total time on a straightforward rebuild is 90 minutes to three hours depending on lift design and the tech’s experience. On a busy team, that’s 500 to 1,000 cycles per year versus 100 to 250 for a hobbyist or small commercial user. At that cycle count, rod seals start to show wear at year four to five, versus year six to eight for lighter use. Watching for early seep and scheduling a preventive rebuild before a full failure prevents the mid-race-weekend surprise.

Photograph the disassembly at each step so reassembly is unambiguous.
