What cables do on a two-post lift

On a two-post lift with a single cylinder or a paired cylinder-with-equalizer design, cables synchronize the two carriages so they rise and fall at exactly the same rate. Without synchronization, one column would rise faster than the other and the vehicle would tilt on the arms. On many designs one cable runs over a pulley at the top of one column, across the crossbar or under the floor bar, and down to the opposite carriage. On other designs, cables also drive the lifting motion directly.

The specific dimensions on the lifts we install for auto lifts for home garage duty vary by manufacturer, but common cable diameters range from 3/8 inch through 1/2 inch, with sheave diameters in the 3 to 5 inch range on well-engineered platforms. Abrasive wear is rare on modern lifts unless the sheave pulley bearing has seized and the cable is dragging.

Fatigue shows up as broken wires you can see on the exterior of the cable. Industry inspection standards generally treat a certain number of broken wires per lay length as the replacement threshold. In practice, on the platforms we sell for auto lifts for home garage service, any visible broken wire is your cue to plan a replacement in the coming months. This is not an emergency. It’s a scheduling item. Cables give you months of warning between the first broken strand and any real degradation of load-holding capacity.

Access the cable runs, which on most two-posts means removing a cover panel from the column or the crossbar. With a bright flashlight and clean gloves, run your hand along each accessible length of cable and inspect for broken wires, corrosion, kinks, or flat spots. Broken wires stab a glove; corrosion looks like red or brown discoloration; flat spots are where the cable has been squashed against something.

Then raise the lift to full extension in stages, stopping periodically to inspect the sections of cable that pass over the sheaves at each height. Sheave-passing sections are where fatigue accumulates fastest, and you want to see them at multiple positions. If you find broken wires clustered around a sheave, plan the replacement. If you find only isolated broken wires elsewhere, log the count and check again next year. This is a 30-minute job that pays enormous safety dividends. Real dimensions and replacement cable specs

When you buy replacement cables for auto lifts for home garage service, the specs must match the original exactly. A 3/8-inch cable is not interchangeable with a 7/16-inch cable even if the fittings look similar. Wire rope construction (7×19, 6×19, or other patterns) also matters because it affects flexibility and fatigue life. When you have the covers off for a cable inspection, take five extra minutes to inspect the sheave pulleys, sheave bearings, and any cable anchor points at the bottom of each carriage. Sheave bearings are the wear item that turns a cable inspection into a same-day fix if you catch it early. A dry or seized bearing will accelerate cable wear dramatically and produce a distinctive squeak on lift travel. Grease with a marine-grade grease per the manufacturer’s schedule and you’ll almost never see a failure.

Anchor points at the bottom of the carriages are where the cable terminates. Confirm the fitting is fully seated in its mounting bracket, the retaining pin or nut is present and tight, and there’s no visible cable damage in the last few inches of the run. These endpoint sections see high stress and rarely fail, but when they do it’s usually because someone missed an obvious visual clue during a prior inspection. Since you’re already there with a flashlight, look. It costs you nothing extra and it’s the piece most amateur inspectors skip.

When to call before you touch anything

If your inspection finds a cable with visibly broken wires and you’re not confident in the replacement procedure, park the lift and call us. Do not lift a vehicle you can’t easily lower back down with a suspect cable. The margin of safety on a properly maintained lift is enormous. The margin on a lift with a compromised cable is not. Better to lose a weekend to a service call than to have a bad day under a two-ton vehicle.
