A racing team crew chief who lives in Ames called us about setting up a home garage where he could handle CV axle and half-shaft replacements on his own vehicles and on the crew’s older support cars. He didn’t want to keep taking those jobs to the shop across town at $135 per hour. His question was simple – what does the site survey actually cover, and what should he have ready when we come out. When we walked him through the process for auto lifts for home garage installs in his neighborhood, the site survey turned out to be more consequential than he expected, because his 1970s-era attached garage had surprises hiding in the walls.

What a site survey actually is

A site survey is a 30-45 minute visit where our install lead comes to your garage with a tape measure, a slab thickness gauge, and a laser level. We measure the ceiling from finished floor to the lowest obstruction. We measure the width and depth of the bay you want the lift in. We look at the slab for existing cracks, previous saw cuts, or joints that indicate expansion sections. We identify where the nearest 220V circuit is and how far it would need to run to reach the powerpack location. And we walk through your access path from the driveway to make sure a forklift can reach the install site.

For auto lifts for home garage installs, the site survey is our chance to catch problems before they become expensive. About one in five surveys turns up something we didn’t expect from photos or phone descriptions – a support column in the wrong place, a slab with an unmarked expansion joint, a garage door track that hangs 3 inches into the lift envelope. Catching those upfront lets us adjust the spec instead of discovering the problem at install and having to reschedule.

Our Ames customer’s specific surprises

When we surveyed his garage, the ceiling measured 11 feet 9 inches – three inches short of standard-height two-post lift requirements. That immediately narrowed our options. Next, we found that his slab had a large saw cut running through the middle of what he wanted to be his lift bay, indicating either an expansion joint or an old repair. Coring through that would compromise anchor holding strength. And finally, his nearest 220V circuit was on the opposite side of the garage, requiring about 35 feet of conduit run.

None of these were dealbreakers, but each changed the spec or the price. For auto lifts for home garage installs, this is why we don’t quote firm prices until after the site survey. Photos and floor plans can’t catch a saw cut through concrete or a garage door track that dips lower than the ceiling. You have to see it in person.

The ceiling fix: low-ceiling variant

At 11 feet 9 inches, we had two options: a low-ceiling two-post lift, or a mid-rise scissor. For CV axle and half-shaft work, either could work, but the two-post gives more freedom to move around the vehicle. We recommended the Rotary SPOA10 low-ceiling variant, which raises the arms about 68 inches instead of the standard 78. That’s still plenty of height for CV axle work – you can stand comfortably under a lifted car and drop a half-shaft without stooping.

Our crew chief tested the working height on paper by measuring how tall he was (6’1″) and how much clearance he needed between his head and the car’s underbody (a few inches). With his eyes at 5’10” and the lift raising the car to 68 inches, he’d have 68 – 70 = -2 inches of head clearance if he wanted to stand fully upright. So he’d need to tilt his head slightly. For CV axle work, which is mostly arm-height, that’s a fine compromise. For engine work, he might have felt cramped.

The slab fix: re-pour or work around

The saw cut through the slab was the harder problem. We considered two options: cut a new pad in the bay area and pour fresh concrete over the joint, or shift the lift location by 4 feet to avoid the joint entirely. Shifting the lift was cheaper but placed it awkwardly close to the pedestrian door. Re-pouring the slab was more expensive – about $2,000 for a 12×24 pad done properly with rebar and 4,000 PSI mix – but it gave him a permanent, professional install location.

He chose the re-pour. For auto lifts for home garage installs where slab quality is compromised, re-pouring is often the right long-term choice even though it hurts the budget on install day. A properly poured slab lasts as long as the building and holds warranty conditions for the manufacturer. A shifted install with compromises tends to bother the owner every time they use it.

The electrical: running the 220V circuit

Two-post lifts need a 220V, 30-amp dedicated circuit. Our customer’s existing 220V was for a welder on the wrong side of the garage. He had two options: run new conduit and wire 35 feet from the panel to the lift location, or extend the welder circuit. Extending the welder circuit isn’t code-compliant because the lift needs a dedicated circuit, so we told him to run new. He hired a local electrician for that portion; we don’t do electrical work ourselves and won’t quote it as part of a lift install. The electrical ran about $600 done properly.

For auto lifts for home garage installs, we always recommend homeowners handle the electrical themselves or hire a licensed electrician before install day. That way when we arrive, we plug the powerpack into the receptacle and go. If the electrical isn’t ready, we install the lift and come back another day to commission it once the electrician has finished. That two-visit approach adds time and cost, so pre-install electrical is worth pushing for.

CV axle work specific considerations

CV axle and half-shaft replacement is one of the more physical jobs a home mechanic tackles. The axle assembly is heavy (30-50 lbs), it’s greasy, and it comes out at an awkward angle. On a two-post lift, you want the car high enough that the axle clears the ground when you pull it out, but low enough that you’re not lifting the axle above your head. The Rotary SPOA10 low-ceiling variant lifts to 68 inches, which puts an average CV axle at about waist height – ideal for the pull-out motion.

For auto lifts for home garage CV axle work, the other requirement is a good jack stand or transmission jack for supporting the axle assembly during removal. We don’t sell those, but we recommend a standard heavy-duty jack stand rated at least 1,500 lb. Our Ames customer already had two of them; they’re the kind of tools any serious home mechanic accumulates over the years. If you don’t have them, buy them before install day so you can be productive from day one.

The install day and first job

The site survey happened in April. The slab re-pour happened in May (contractor took two weeks between survey and pour). The electrical went in the last week of May. Our install crew arrived the first Tuesday in June, spent about six hours setting the two columns on the new pad, and had the lift commissioned by 4pm. He put his own truck on it that evening – just to see it work – and did his first CV axle job the following Saturday on a friend’s Subaru.

Total elapsed time from initial call to first CV axle job: about ten weeks. Most of that was slab cure time and coordinating the electrician, not lift-related. For anybody planning auto lifts for home garage installs where the site needs prep, budget three months from decision to first job. That’s the honest timeline. Anybody who tells you it can happen in two weeks either has a perfect site or is lying about the prep work.
