A weekend hobbyist mechanic in Waterloo emailed us in the fall about auto lifts for home garage seasonal storage. He wanted to put a project car up in the air from October through April so he could pull the daily driver underneath and reclaim his garage floor for the winter. Simple enough goal. Complicated enough execution once we started talking about his slab, his ceiling, and the fact that he had never actually confirmed his concrete thickness. This checklist is the same one we walked him through, and it works for anybody in Iowa thinking about a first home-garage lift.

Step 1: define the actual job
Before you look at any specs, write down what you will do with the lift on a Saturday afternoon. For our Waterloo customer the answer was seasonal storage of a Camaro restoration project, occasional oil changes on the daily driver, and maybe brake work every couple of years. Everything else was a maybe. That job list shapes the lift class. Pure storage lets you consider a four-post. Add service work and you might want a two-post. Add tight-ceiling limits and you might want a mid-rise. Any answer is fine as long as it matches the actual job.
We turn away buyers a couple of times a year who insist on a 15,000-pound commercial two-post for a Miata restoration. That is a lift for a shop that runs one-ton trucks, not a home-garage project. Right-sized auto lifts for home garage service means matching capacity to your heaviest realistic vehicle, plus a 30 percent reserve. For most Iowa hobbyists that lands at 8,000 to 10,000 pounds on a two-post and 9,000 to 12,000 pounds on a four-post storage lift.
Step 2: measure the slab
Your slab thickness dictates half the buying decision. The published spec for a Rotary or Challenger 10,000-pound two-post lift is 4.5 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with proper reinforcement. Our Waterloo customer had a 25-year-old attached garage slab with no records and no idea what was underneath. The only reliable way to check that is to rent a wet-cut core drill and pull a plug. A 2-inch core in a corner tells you thickness. Have a friendly concrete guy look at the plug and tell you whether the mix is any good.
If you cannot core drill, you can sometimes measure at the garage door threshold where the slab ends. That is a rough proxy but not perfect because slabs are often thicker at the edges than in the middle. When in doubt, assume the worst. Assume 3 inches with no rebar. Plan for either a four-post lift, which spreads load, or a slab-pad-in-slab retrofit under a two-post. Both are workable. Neither is a surprise you want to discover on install day.
Step 3: check the rebar
Rebar is the other half of the slab question. A 4.5-inch slab with no rebar is stronger than 3 inches with no rebar, but weaker than 4.5 inches with a proper rebar mat. When you core drill, look at the sidewalls of the hole for signs of rebar. Some slabs use welded wire mesh instead, which is fine. Some use nothing, and those slabs are more likely to crack around anchor locations under repeated lifting cycles.
If your slab has no reinforcement, do not panic. Rotary and Challenger both offer higher-capacity wedge anchors (like the Powers Fasteners Wedge-Bolt+ or Hilti Kwik-Bolt TZ2) that can hold in unreinforced concrete as long as the thickness meets minimum. In some cases we spec a larger anchor and adjust torque values downward slightly to compensate. All of this is documented in the manufacturer install manuals but requires a careful read.
Step 4: verify the ceiling
Ceiling clearance for a four-post storage lift is different from a two-post service lift. On a four-post at full storage height, the vehicle roof needs to clear whatever is above. For a Camaro at 4 feet 6 inches tall stored at 5 feet 6 inches deck height, the top of the roof sits at 10 feet. Add a couple of inches of margin and you need 10 feet 3 inches or more of usable ceiling. A standard 12-foot pole barn easily makes that. A 9-foot attached garage does not.
If you are storing a taller vehicle like a truck or SUV, redo the math. A Tahoe at 6 feet 3 inches stored at 5 feet 6 inches puts the roof at 11 feet 9 inches. That is too tall for most attached garages. This is exactly the check people skip when planning auto lifts for home garage seasonal storage. Do it before you buy, not after.
Step 5: confirm the electrical
Almost every 10,000-pound-plus lift on the market runs on a 220-volt single-phase motor drawing 15 to 20 amps at peak. That means you need a dedicated 220-volt circuit within about 6 feet of the power column position. If your garage is on a shared 100-amp panel with the house and everything else, adding a 220-volt drop might mean upgrading the panel first. For a Waterloo attached garage that could be a few hundred dollars if the panel has space, or a few thousand if you need a service upgrade.
Plan the electrical before you plan the anchor pattern. Where the power column sits determines where the outlet goes, and moving the outlet later is more expensive than getting it right the first time. Step 6: think about drip trays and floor protection
If you are storing a car for six months on a lift, the fluids underneath will eventually drip. A four-post storage lift with drip trays keeps that off your slab and the vehicle below. Rotary and Challenger both offer factory drip trays. Aftermarket universal trays work fine too. Spend the extra hundred dollars per set. Six months of leaks on your daily driver hood is a much bigger mess than a set of trays.
Rolling jacks are the other accessory to consider for a storage lift that occasionally does service work. A pair of rolling jacks lets you lift wheels off the runways for brake work, tire rotation, or suspension service. Step 7: install day expectations
A four-post lift installs in 4 to 6 hours on a good slab. A two-post takes about the same. Freight arrival is the wildcard, usually a 2 to 4 hour window. Have the slab clean, the electrical roughed in, the door open, and expect us to be there most of the day. When we leave, cycle the lift ten times with an empty deck to bleed the hydraulics, then load a light vehicle and cycle again before you trust it with a project car.
