A car restoration shop owner in Cedar Rapids came to us last summer with a budget, a ceiling height, and a wish list that included alignment work on the same lift he was using for teardowns and reassembly. He wanted a decision tree for auto lifts for home garage or small-shop service that would take him from budget to configuration without the confusion of a dozen sales pitches. We built him one over the course of a couple of phone calls, and it is the same framework we use with every restoration-shop buyer in eastern Iowa. Budget sets the class. Ceiling sets the style. Vehicle mix sets the arm geometry. Everything else is optional.

Branch 1: what is the budget
Budget sets the class of lift before anything else. Below a certain price point you are looking at import-brand two-posts (Atlas Automotive Equipment, some BendPak entry-level, and value-tier options). In the middle band you are looking at premium import or entry-level domestic (BendPak Platinum series or Rotary R-Series). Above that band you are in full-domestic Rotary SPO and Challenger CL10 territory. All three tiers install and run. The differences are cycle life, warranty support, and how many years the parts stay easily sourced.
For a restoration shop that will use auto lifts for home garage or small-shop service five to seven days a week for the next 30 years, we push hard toward the top tier. The initial premium pays back many times over in downtime avoided and resale retained. For a hobbyist who lifts one weekend a month, the middle tier is a perfectly reasonable choice. We do not push anybody into more lift than they need.
Branch 2: what is the ceiling
Once budget picks the tier, ceiling picks the style. Above 12 feet of working ceiling and you can install any overhead-style two-post on the market without thinking about it. Between 10 and 12 feet, you need to check the specific model’s overall height. Below 10 feet, you either go baseplate two-post or move to a mid-rise or four-post. This is where the decision tree branches hardest, because the ceiling number is not negotiable and it kills options above it.
Our Cedar Rapids restoration shop had 11 feet of working ceiling in an old commercial building. That put overhead lifts in play, but only just. We ran the specific model heights on Rotary SPO10 (11 feet 4 inches overall) and Challenger CL10 (11 feet 6 inches overall) and both were too tall for the ceiling. We ended up recommending a baseplate lift with a lower overall height, which fit comfortably at 10 feet 8 inches to top of column.
Branch 3: what is the vehicle mix
Vehicle mix picks the arm geometry. Restoration shops working exclusively on classic muscle cars, sports cars, and compact sedans do fine with asymmetric arms because everything they lift is short-wheelbase. Add a project truck or a Suburban restoration to the mix and you might want versa arms that can swap between symmetric and asymmetric. Restoration shops that do vintage pickups end up in symmetric or versa territory almost every time.
Our Cedar Rapids customer was pure muscle car and sports car (Chevelles, Camaros, an occasional Corvette), so asymmetric was the clear choice. Versa was a nice-to-have but not needed. For a shop that expands the vehicle mix later, versa hedges the bet. If we are being honest, we spec versa when the buyer is on the fence, because it costs a fraction more and eliminates one future regret.
Branch 4: overhead versus baseplate
Overhead two-post lifts have a top crossbar that connects the columns above the vehicle. Hydraulic hoses and safety cables run through that crossbar. The tradeoff is 8 to 12 inches of headroom lost to the crossbar height. Baseplate two-posts move all that plumbing into a base beam that sits on the floor between the columns. You gain the overhead clearance and lose a little floor accessibility because the beam is in the way.
For a Cedar Rapids restoration shop working on lowered classics with 4-inch ground clearance, the base beam is a real concern. You cannot roll a lowered Camaro over the beam without ramps. That is not a dealbreaker (ramps come with the lift and only add a moment to each vehicle), but it is worth knowing before you buy. In tight-ceiling shops, baseplate wins on clearance. In lowered-car shops with tall ceilings, overhead wins on floor access. Our customer picked baseplate because ceiling won that argument.
Alignment work: what changes
Alignment is the wildcard. A standard two-post lift is not an alignment lift. It does not have turn plates in the runways (because it has no runways), and the vehicle is supported by the frame rather than the tires. That means camber, caster, and toe measurements are meaningless on a two-post because the suspension is unloaded. If alignment is on the job list, you need a four-post alignment lift or an alignment scissor lift with turn plates and rear slip plates.
We told our Cedar Rapids shop this directly. He did not love the answer. His options were to add a dedicated four-post alignment lift as a second lift in his shop, or to send alignment work out. He picked the second lift plan, and we quoted him a Rotary R-Series four-post alignment lift for the second bay. That is a real cost bump, but honest advice on auto lifts for home garage service means telling the customer when a two-post cannot do the job.
Branch 5: install and delivery timing
Timing is the last branch. Rotary SPO10 baseplate lifts we usually have in Iowa stock. Challenger CL10 baseplate lifts are usually in stock or a week out. R-Series four-post alignment lifts are typically three to four weeks out from Rotary depending on the season. If you are opening a shop and need everything on the floor by a specific date, we build the schedule backward from that date and order the long-lead item first.
Freight to Cedar Rapids from our Ames warehouse takes a day. Freight from Rotary’s plant takes about a week. For an in-stock lift we can typically install within two weeks of order. For a special-order alignment lift, four to six weeks is realistic. Plan accordingly. Buying auto lifts for home garage or restoration-shop use is a project, not a same-day purchase.
Final configuration for the Cedar Rapids shop
Our Cedar Rapids restoration shop ended up with a baseplate asymmetric two-post lift in the main teardown bay and a four-post alignment lift in the second bay. Total project ran a solid five-figure investment across both lifts, install, and electrical. He has been running it for a year and has zero regrets. The decision tree worked because we walked every branch honestly, including the alignment tangent where a single two-post could not have done the job.
