Myth One: You Need the Biggest Column You Can Afford

Myth Two: Ceiling Height Is Just a Number

A shop that spec’s a specialty transmission lift usually ends up with an overpriced tool for a job a standard two-post handles.
Where the two-post spec does matter for transmission work is rise height and arm reach. A minimum of 74 inches of rise gives the tech room to work under a European sedan with the trans jack in position. Arm reach matters because European trans mounts are often close to the frame rails, and the arms need to position under load points that a short-reach column cannot cover. It just draws more current and gets hotter. The motor spec is set by the manufacturer to match the pump and the cylinder, and it is engineered to be efficient at rated load.
The number that actually matters for shop throughput is the down-time, not the up-time. A lift with a proportional descent valve comes down under control in about 30 seconds. A lift with a simple gravity-descent valve is slower and less predictable. We spec proportional descent on every install because it saves the tech real seconds on every cycle.
