Wheel bearing work is one of the least forgiving jobs a tire-and-alignment shop takes on, and it is the single job that convinces most owners in the Quad Cities they need auto lifts installed the right way the first time. When a hub is torqued to spec and a bearing is pressed under load, the last thing the tech should be worrying about is whether the arms are locked, whether the anchor bolts are still tight, or whether that overhead cable has one more month of service left in it. This walkthrough is how we approach the install, the annual inspection, and the cable schedule that keeps a two-post rated for the next decade of bearing hubs.

Why Wheel Bearing Shops Buy a Different Kind of Two-Post

A shop that lives on brake pads and rotations can get by with a mid-tier 10,000 lb two-post. A shop that pulls hubs weekly cannot. Wheel bearing service subjects the arms to sideloading you do not see in most jobs: the tech is leaning on a press, running an air hammer at odd angles, and holding the hub assembly at spindle height for extended stretches. The lift is never truly still. That is why we spec Rotary or Challenger commercial columns for the Quad Cities shops we work with, and why we get auto lifts installed with the arm-restraint system and the swing arm restraints checked and torqued before we hand over the keys.

The cheap import lifts that show up on Amazon are built for a home garage that goes up and down twice a week. A bearing shop is on and off the lift 30 times a day. The pad rubber wears faster, the sheaves wear faster, and the equalization cables stretch faster. We tell owners to plan on a serious commercial column from the start, because getting auto lifts installed twice — once cheap, once right — is more expensive than doing it right on day one.

The Anchor Bolt Reality Nobody Talks About

Every install we do starts with a hammer test on the slab. Concrete that sounds hollow at the anchor point will not hold a wedge anchor at torque, no matter what the spec sheet says. Most Quad Cities shops we walk into have four inches of slab, sometimes six, poured decades ago. That is enough for a properly rated Powers or Simpson wedge anchor to hold a 10,000 lb column, but only if the concrete under the bolt is dense and the anchor is set to the torque spec printed in the column base. We have re-anchored two-posts other installers left behind, and the failure mode is always the same: undersized bit, undersized anchor, and no torque wrench used.

Before we get auto lifts installed, we core-sample the slab if there is any doubt. It takes an hour. It is the difference between a lift that lasts 20 years and a lift that walks a quarter inch a season until the columns are out of plumb and the equalization cables are chewing themselves apart. The shops that call us for wheel bearing work already understand that the slab is the foundation of the safety system. Cable Inspection Intervals for a Bearing Shop

The manufacturer says inspect every 90 days. In a wheel bearing shop, we tell our customers to inspect every 30. The reason is duty cycle. A cable that is rated for 100,000 cycles at full load will still fail early if it is unspooling and respooling 40 times a day under vibration. We look for three things: broken outer wires (any more than three in a lay length and the cable is out), corrosion at the sheave contact points, and abnormal wear on the sheaves themselves. A grooved sheave will eat a new cable in six months. If yours is grooved, replace it before the cable, not after.

Cable replacement is straightforward on a properly designed two-post — an hour per column if the shop is clean and the tech has done it before. The reason shops let cables run too long is not laziness; it is that nobody showed them what to look for. That is part of every install and every service visit we do. Arm Restraints, Swing Locks, and the ANSI Standard

ANSI/ALI ALCTV-2017 is the standard every commercial two-post sold in the United States has to meet. Inside that standard is a spec called arm restraint, which is the mechanical system that keeps the arms from swinging under load. It is a small gear at the base of each arm that engages when the arm is raised. If it is missing, worn, or bypassed, the arms will drift, and a bearing tech leaning into a press will feel the vehicle move. That is when accidents happen. Every lift we sell is ANSI/ALI certified with functioning arm restraints, and every install includes a functional test at delivery.

The swing lock is the audible click you hear when the safeties engage. In a Rotary SPO10 or a Challenger CL10 that click should be crisp and consistent at every step of the column. If it is intermittent, the safety pawl is worn or the ladder is bent. We check it on every service call. When a shop calls us because a lift is making a new noise, nine times out of ten the pawl spring is the culprit and it is a 20-minute fix. Left alone for a year, it is a bigger conversation.

Overhead vs Floor-Plate: What Bearing Shops Should Pick

Wheel bearing work is often done with a torque multiplier or a bearing press between the columns, and that is the argument for a floor-plate two-post. The floor plate crosses under the vehicle and gives you clean overhead access for a jib crane, a mezzanine, or ductwork. The argument for an overhead is a cleaner floor, easier drainage, and a mechanical shut-off if the vehicle roof contacts the crossbar. Both are safe. Both are ANSI/ALI certified. The choice is about your building.

The Quad Cities shops we work with lean overhead because their buildings are older and the slab is not always level enough for a floor plate to sit flush. Newer builds go floor plate when the tech is running impact tools at height. When we quote a shop, we walk the space with a laser level and a tape and we tell you which one fits. We do not have a favorite; we have a right answer for each building. Getting auto lifts installed to match the building matters more than picking a brand.

Electrical and Air Prep Before the Truck Shows Up

A commercial two-post pulls a 20 amp single-phase 220 volt circuit, sometimes 30 amp on a three-phase job. Most of the Quad Cities shops we visit already have the circuit; a handful need an electrician to run a new drop. We coordinate with your electrician so the disconnect is within sight of the columns and the drop is at the right height for the power unit. Air is optional on most two-posts but required if you want the pneumatic single-point lock release. If you want that convenience, run half-inch airline to the passenger-side column before the install crew arrives.

The install itself takes six to eight hours for a single column pair, and we prefer to be there the day before to stage. Nothing kills a schedule like a pallet blocking the bay when the concrete crew is drilling anchors. If the shop is running, we work around your day. If the shop is closed on a Saturday, we can knock it out in one shift and have you rolling by Monday. Either way, we do not leave until the lift has been cycled ten times at full load and you have signed off on the walk-around.

What the First Year of Service Actually Looks Like

Once the lift is in, the first year is quiet if the install was done right. We come back at 90 days for a courtesy inspection, which is included in the install cost. At that visit we retorque the anchor bolts (they will always seat a little in the first weeks), we check the cable tension, and we grease the sheaves. If the shop is doing bearing work daily, we schedule the next visit for six months out. If the shop is a rotational-service shop, we go annual.

The customers who call us at year five because the lift is making a new noise are almost always the ones who skipped a visit somewhere in year two or three. A two-post is not a set-it-and-forget-it tool; it is a piece of safety equipment with wear parts. The good news is that Rotary and Challenger commercial columns are engineered to be serviced. Every wear part is available, every bolt is standard, and every cable is replaceable in a morning.
