A rural farm shop autolift garage in southern Minnesota is usually a different animal than a suburban or commercial installation. The bay is often part of a larger machine shed, the vehicles range from pickups to tractors to trailer axles, and alignment work is added later when a family member gets certified or a neighbor needs a favor. We work with a lot of Minnesota farm shops just north of the Iowa line, and the same bay-layout mistakes come up every time. This pre-purchase checklist walks through the specific dimensions, clearances, and workflow decisions you should nail down before you sign the PO on a lift.

Checklist Item 1: Vehicle Inventory and Wheelbase Range

Start with a written list of every vehicle that will ever touch the lift. Not the tractors, those are not going on a two-post, but every wheeled vehicle you might reasonably work on. Farm pickups, personal cars, the neighbor’s SUV, the family utility trailer if the axles will come off for service. Write down the wheelbase of each. The shortest wheelbase determines your minimum arm-swing reach. The longest determines your maximum arm extension. Both need to fit the arms on your lift.

Farm shops that skip this step often buy a lift with standard arms and then discover that the neighbor’s long-wheelbase Suburban does not fit the arm pattern comfortably. The arm has to swing to a shallow angle to reach the front lift point, which puts the pad at a bad geometry to the frame rail. On the other end, a short-wheelbase compact car might have the front arms almost fully retracted just to reach the front lift points. Both conditions are workable but not ideal. When we spec an autolift garage lift for a farm shop, we look at the wheelbase range and either recommend three-stage arms front and rear for maximum flexibility, or bias toward the longer end of your inventory if the range is truly diverse. The extra $200 for three-stage arms is money you will thank us for on the first oddball vehicle. Farm-shop owners who saved on standard arms almost always upgrade within two years, and the field-swap kits are more expensive than the original upgrade.

Checklist Item 2: Bay Footprint and Column Spacing

A two-post lift needs about 12 feet of width between columns and 14 to 16 feet of length for a comfortable working bay. That is the interior clear dimension, not the exterior building. Standard column spacing on a two-post is 11 feet 6 inches to 12 feet outside-to-outside of the columns, which means you need at least 13 feet of usable interior width to allow tech access on both sides of the lift.

Southern Minnesota farm shops built in the last 20 years often have 14-foot-wide bays, which is comfortable. Older barns and machine sheds sometimes have 12-foot bays, which is tight but workable if the lift is placed carefully. If your bay is under 12 feet wide, a two-post is not going to fit well, and you should look at a single-post drive-on or a scissor mid-rise instead. The other constraint is length. Most farm-shop autolift garage layouts need enough length for the vehicle plus 6 feet at the front for tech access to the engine bay and 4 feet at the rear for door swing. On a 20-foot pickup, that is a 30-foot bay minimum. If your building is 24 feet deep, you are looking at the tail of the truck being inside the door swing, which creates a workflow problem. Measure your bay before you shop, not the other way around. We would rather help you plan the fit than sell you a lift that does not.

Checklist Item 3: Ceiling Height for Alignment Work

If you plan to do alignment work in your farm shop autolift garage, ceiling height matters more than for basic service. Alignment adds an alignment rack or scanner overhead in some cases, but more commonly it just means you want maximum lift height to work standing up under the vehicle while adjusting toe, camber, and caster. Standard two-post lifts extend to about 71 inches under the arms. Some longer-column lifts extend to 74 or 77 inches.

For a 6-foot tech doing alignment adjustments, you want the vehicle high enough to walk under and reach the tie rod and control arm hardware without stooping. That usually means 12 feet of ceiling clearance minimum, ideally 14. In a farm shop machine-shed section, ceiling height is often set by the truss height of the building and can range from 10 to 16 feet. Measure before you buy the lift. If you have 10.5 feet, you cannot use a standard lift, and you need to look at low-profile or asymmetric-column options. If you have 14 feet, you have plenty of room. If you have 12 feet, you are in the sweet spot for most standard two-post lifts. We tell every rural autolift garage buyer to write the ceiling height on their shop wall in permanent marker so they never lose track of it.

Checklist Item 4: Electrical and Air Service

A farm shop with a lift needs 220V single-phase power at the lift location, ideally a dedicated 20-amp circuit. If you already have three-phase power for other shop equipment, three-phase lifts are available and are quieter and slightly cheaper to run, but three-phase is not standard in rural residential-service farm shops. If you are in doubt, call your rural electric coop and ask what service you have at the panel.

Air service matters if you plan to run impact wrenches and air tools at the lift. A 60 or 80 gallon compressor with 5 HP of drive is enough for most farm-shop autolift garage bays, and the compressor should sit at least 15 feet from the lift so the vibration and noise stay out of your work area. Run air lines to a drop at each corner of the lift bay, ideally with quick-couplers at working height. Farm shops that skip the air rough-in during initial construction often add it later at three times the labor cost. If you are building or remodeling, run the air lines while the walls are open. If you already have the shop built, the retrofit is still worth it, especially for alignment work where a quick-coupler at every bay corner keeps the tech from dragging hose. Checklist Item 5: Workflow and Tool Placement

Bay layout is more than clearances. It is about workflow. Where does the toolbox sit? Where does the parts washer live? Where do you set the vehicle wheels once they come off? Every farm-shop autolift garage we walk has a workflow layout that either works with the lift or fights it. The lifts that work are the ones where the toolbox sits on the tech’s dominant-hand side, the parts washer is within one step of the lift, and the wheel-storage rack is on a rolling cart that can move.

Fighting the lift means putting the toolbox in the corner of the shop 20 feet from the lift, so every wrench trip is a walk. Multiply that across a full alignment job and you burn 30 minutes on the walk. It sounds trivial and it adds up fast. When we help a farm shop plan an autolift garage bay layout, we ask about their workflow patterns as much as their vehicle inventory. The answer usually points to a specific column-facing orientation for the lift and a specific set of nearby workbench and tool placements. Getting this right in the planning stage costs nothing. Getting it wrong and fixing it later means moving heavy furniture and running conduits. We would rather draw it out with you now than watch you rearrange in year three.

Checklist Item 6: Weather and Winter Operation

Southern Minnesota winters are hard on hydraulic lifts. Cold hydraulic fluid moves slowly, and lifts installed in unheated machine sheds can develop sluggish response below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. If your farm shop autolift garage is heated, this is not a problem. If it is unheated and used year-round, you have two options: switch to a synthetic hydraulic fluid rated for cold weather, or install a wall-mount heater near the lift and warm the bay before use.

Synthetic hydraulic fluid is the cheaper solution and is what we recommend to most rural Minnesota farm shops. The cost difference is minimal, and the cold-weather performance is meaningfully better. The fluid also handles hot summer conditions equally well, so there is no seasonal swap. The other winter consideration is the concrete floor: cold concrete pulls heat out of anything sitting on it, including the lift base and any vehicle you have parked. If you plan to work on your lift in January in an unheated shed, dress for it and warm the bay for 30 minutes before starting. That is not a lift issue, it is a working-conditions issue, and it applies to everything you do in that shed. Farm shop lifts run reliably for decades in unheated conditions with the right fluid choice and reasonable operating expectations.

Checklist Item 7: Install Coordination and Timeline

The final checklist item is coordinating the install itself. From the Iowa border down through Ames, we can generally get to a southern Minnesota farm shop for install within two to three weeks of the PO. The install day itself is one day for a two-person crew on a fresh slab, or one and a half days if we are doing any concrete cutting or repouring. We coordinate with your electrician for the final wire-in and with your compressor tech if we are also plumbing air lines.

Farm shops that plan the install week in advance have smooth installs. We ask you to clear the bay, arrange for your electrician to be available the afternoon of the install, and have the intended lift location marked on the slab. If we arrive and the bay is full of tractors or the electrician is a week out, we lose a day. On the flip side, farm shops that treat install day like a small project and prep for it get a working autolift garage bay by end of day.
