Every autolift garage project we quote starts with the same three numbers scribbled on the back of an estimate: ceiling height, door opening, and stall width. A car restoration shop owner up in southern Minnesota called us last winter with a 30×40 pole building, 12-foot sidewalls, and a dream of storing one classic Corvette on top and one project car underneath. That is a completely reasonable ask, and it happens to sit right on the knife’s edge of what physics will allow. This article walks you through the exact decision tree we use to match a lift to a building, working from budget on down to the boring but essential clearances that make the difference between a lift you love and a lift that dents your rafters.

Start With Ceiling Height Before Anything Else

The single most common autolift garage mistake we see is picking a lift first and measuring the ceiling second. Do it the other way around. Stand inside the building with a tape measure and check the height at the lowest point along the drive-through path, not the peak. Trusses, ductwork, garage-door tracks, and light fixtures all steal clearance you thought you had. In a typical 12-foot sidewall pole barn, the actual usable height under a truss chord is usually 10 feet 8 inches to 11 feet 2 inches depending on the truss depth and any dropped bracing.

For a two-post autolift garage rated at 9,000 or 10,000 pounds, you need roughly 11 feet 5 inches at the crossbar to run the lift at full height comfortably. That number drops to about 9 feet 6 inches for a low-ceiling model, and it climbs past 12 feet for an extended-height two-post designed for tall trucks and vans. If you plan to park-and-store a second vehicle underneath, add the roof height of the top vehicle plus at least 6 inches of working clearance. Sedans usually fit; pickups and SUVs get tight fast.

Door Swing Sets Your Bay Layout

Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door swing is the sleeper problem in a lot of autolift garage builds. If your overhead door has standard-lift tracks, they curve up along the ceiling in the exact place the tops of the lift columns want to live. We have seen customers pour concrete, order a lift, and then realize on install day that their door tracks and their lift crossbar are trying to occupy the same six inches of airspace. High-lift or vertical-lift door hardware fixes it, and so does moving the lift back two feet from the door opening.

The other door concern is width. A typical 9-foot or 10-foot overhead door narrows the effective drive-in width once you account for jamb thickness and header. If you are installing a symmetric two-post lift with 51-inch drive-through, you want at least 108 inches of clear door opening for comfortable entry with mirrors extended. Asymmetric lifts save you some inches. Walk-around clearance on either side of the lift should be at least 36 inches for a working autolift garage, and 48 inches if you want to open both doors of the car up top without banging into a column.

Match Lift Style to How You Actually Work

The decision tree branches sharply once ceiling and door are locked in. If your ceiling is under 11 feet and you want a serious lift, you are looking at either a low-ceiling two-post or a four-post storage lift. Low-ceiling two-posts use a shorter crossbar and slightly narrower columns, which trades top-of-lift height for slightly reduced peak lift capacity in some configurations. A four-post storage lift skips the crossbar problem entirely and is what most restoration hobbyists pick when the primary use case is parking one car over another.

If your ceiling is 11 feet or taller, a symmetric or asymmetric two-post is the workhorse choice for real maintenance. The overhead crossbar carries the hydraulic and safety lines, keeping the floor clean and open. Baseplate versions route those lines through a floor channel and let you fit under a 10-foot ceiling, but they add a small tripping edge that some owners hate. For an autolift garage that is genuinely a hobby shop, we usually steer people to a two-post overhead if they have the height, and a four-post storage lift plus a rolling floor jack if they do not.

Budget Bands and What Each One Buys You

Budget shapes the tree as much as clearance does. In the entry band, you are looking at a value-brand two-post or four-post that will handle a passenger car cleanly and last a hobbyist a decade of weekend use. Middle-band lifts add smoother hydraulics, thicker cables, better safety locks, and a longer warranty. Top-band commercial lifts from Rotary or Challenger are what full-time shops buy, and they are overkill for most home autolift garage builds unless you plan to run production hours on them.

We are honest with customers who ask us to talk them into a top-tier lift they do not need. If a restoration shop lifts one car a week, a middle-band two-post from BendPak or Atlas is a fine choice, and the price difference funds a decent air compressor or a used parts washer. If a commercial shop is running eight to twelve cars a day, we push toward the commercial tier because the duty cycle math works out. Concrete Slab Requirements Nobody Warns You About

An autolift garage lives or dies on the slab underneath it. Most manufacturers spec 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete for a 9,000 or 10,000 lb two-post. Some low-ceiling and heavy-duty models require 4.25 or 4.5 inches at 3,500 psi. If you are pouring new, do the manufacturer’s spec plus a half-inch and you will never worry again. If you are working with an existing slab, borrow a rebar detector or a small core sample to confirm thickness before you drill anchor holes. Cracked or thin concrete is not a place to save money.

Rebar or mesh is optional per most lift install manuals, but we recommend it. Anchors need to be at least 6 inches from any control joint or expansion joint, ideally 12 inches. If your slab has a saw-cut control joint running down the middle of the bay, plan your lift footprint around it, not through it. Slab slope is the other silent killer. More than a quarter inch per foot of slope will cause the lift to bind in the safety locks. If your barn slab drains to a floor drain, ask us how to shim the columns to compensate before you cut into the concrete.

Store One, Work On the Other

The autolift garage use case that draws the most calls is exactly what our Minnesota restoration customer described: park one on top, work on one below. This works, but the math is unforgiving. Take your top vehicle’s height, add 48 to 60 inches of working room below it, and that is the ceiling you actually need. A stock C5 Corvette is 48 inches tall. A 2020 F-150 crew cab is roughly 78 inches. The Corvette-on-top scenario fits in a 12-foot barn. The F-150-on-top scenario does not, unless you find a very tall four-post lift and skip working underneath entirely.

The four-post storage lift is the tool of choice here. It gives you a stable, safety-locked parking platform, integrated ramps, and optional rolling jacks that let you lift the vehicle on top off the runways for wheel service. Two-post lifts can technically hold a car overnight in their safety locks, and many owners do that with no drama for years, but manufacturers universally spec four-posts for long-term storage. If your primary reason for buying a lift is storage plus occasional oil changes, buy the four-post. If your primary reason is real maintenance and storage is a bonus, buy the two-post and add a low-profile jack.
