Concrete Slab: The Non-Negotiable Starting Point
Before you look at a single spec sheet, we need to know what’s under your feet. For any two-post lift up to about 10,000 lb, the concrete must be a minimum four inches thick, 3,000 PSI, and free of major cracks under the intended column footprints. Four-post drive-on models are more forgiving because they distribute weight through four base plates, but we still want at least four inches of good concrete under each foot. Older Marion garages and hobby buildings we survey often have three-inch slabs, or worse, three inches with a chicken-wire mesh instead of rebar.
When we do a phone survey, we ask you to drill a small test hole at the intended column location and measure the actual thickness. If you’re pouring new concrete for a shop build, spec five to six inches with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers. That gives you overhead — you can add a bigger lift later without pulling anchors and re-shooting. We also flag radiant floor tubing, because a wrong anchor into a PEX loop turns a weekend project into a plumbing repair. Ceiling Height and Column Clearance in a Marion Pole Barn
Twelve-foot side walls sound generous until you actually measure. A standard-height two-post lift needs about 12 feet of usable clearance to raise a full-size pickup all the way up, and your ceiling isn’t your side wall — it’s the underside of your trusses or purlins. In many Marion pole buildings we’ve surveyed, the true clearance at the truss chord is 10 to 10.5 feet even when the eave measures 12 feet outside.
We measure three heights: the underside of the truss chord at the column location, the height to the lowest overhead obstruction anywhere the vehicle will pass, and the height at the peak if you want the option of a taller model later. For lower ceilings, we spec low-ceiling variants (typically around 132 inches column height) or a four-post model that puts the vehicle deck at whatever runway height you choose. Home hobbyists sometimes want a mid-rise or scissor lift instead — great for oil, brakes, and wheel work, poor for climbing under. A proper autolift garage layout starts with three tape-measure numbers, not a marketing photo.
The Autolift Garage Power Question: What Your Panel Needs
Almost every residential-duty two-post and four-post lift we install runs on 220V single-phase, drawing 20 to 30 amps at start-up. That means a dedicated 30-amp breaker on a two-pole and a short, straight run of 10-gauge wire to a NEMA 6-30 or hard-wired disconnect near the column. If your Marion shop only has a 100-amp main panel serving the house AND the outbuilding, we walk through load before we quote — a compressor, a welder, and a lift all pulling at once is a nuisance-trip conversation.
We do not recommend running a 220V lift through an extension cord, sharing the circuit with anything else, or converting a three-phase pump motor with a rotary phase converter as a first solution. Real three-phase power in a home garage is rare and expensive; we’d rather spec the single-phase version. If you’re planning ahead, drop a subpanel with 60 amps of headroom in the shop before drywall goes up, and stub in conduit for future EV charging while you’re at it. Getting the power right on day one is 90 percent of an autolift garage electrical bill.
Two-Post vs Four-Post for the Weekend Hobbyist
The most common Marion hobbyist question is whether to buy a two-post or a four-post. Two-posts give you unobstructed access to the underside — wheels hang free, exhaust drops straight down, and you can pull a transmission without fighting runways. Four-posts trade that for storage: park one car on the deck, keep another underneath. If you’re doing brakes, driveline, and general wrenching, a two-post wins on ergonomics. If your goal is to double your garage floor space, four-post wins on utility.
For a hobbyist with a mixed daily-driver and project-car life, we often quote a 10,000-lb symmetric or asymmetric two-post AND flag that a four-post can be added on the other side of the shop later. Symmetric arms give balanced load on lighter cars; asymmetric shifts the vehicle rearward for door swing on modern trucks. Both are safe when specced right. We rarely recommend a scissor for a first autolift garage buy because the underside access is limited, but scissors do have a place for tire-shop-style rotation work. Match the lift to the work, not the ad copy.
Measuring Your Vehicles Before You Order
Before you sign, we want the wheelbase and curb weight of every vehicle you plan to lift. A newer half-ton crew cab is often 5,600 to 6,200 lb curb, longer than 150 inches wheelbase. A three-quarter-ton diesel can push 8,000 lb before you add a plow or a tool body. If you tell us “a truck” without a model, we spec conservative — 10,000-lb capacity minimum for anything that will see a work truck, 12,000 or 15,000 lb if you want margin for a duallies or an aftermarket bumper.
Wheelbase matters for four-posts because the runways have to accept your longest vehicle without hanging the tires off the end. Standard four-post runways are around 172 inches usable; extended-length versions add another foot for crew cabs. For two-posts, you’re checking arm reach: the pads need to hit factory pinch-weld points on your lowest and longest vehicles. A well-planned autolift garage handles every vehicle you own without a spacer stack that scares you.
The Delivery, Rigging, and Anchor Day
Delivery day is where hobbyists get surprised. A crated two-post lift weighs 1,600 to 2,000 lb; a four-post can hit 2,400. Freight comes on a lift-gate truck if you ask for it, but you still need a way to move columns from the driveway into the shop. A pallet jack works on smooth concrete; on gravel or uneven pads, we bring a skid steer with forks or coordinate with a local rigger. Anchoring is not a place to save money. We drill for 3/4-inch wedge anchors at manufacturer spec depth, hammer them flush, torque to the spec in the manual (usually 110 to 150 ft-lb), and re-torque after the first ten cycles. If your concrete tests soft — a drill bit that punches through in seconds — we stop and recommend a slab patch or full replacement before we anchor.
