Buying an autolift garage as a weekend hobbyist in the Des Moines metro is a very different exercise than speccing a lift for a working shop, and a customer who called us last month made that point loud and clear. He wanted to do his own engine oil pan gasket work on a 2004 Silverado and a 2018 Camry, he wanted the lift to fit in a 24-by-24 attached garage with a 9-foot ceiling, and he wanted a straightforward model-and-spec comparison so he wasn’t buying a commercial-grade unit he’d never actually push to its limits. What follows is the exact pre-purchase checklist we walked with him, item by item, so you can run it against your own build.

Measure Twice: Ceiling, Width, and Overhead Door Height
The first checklist item on any autolift garage build is measurement, and it’s the item most often skipped. Ceiling height is the obvious one, but it’s not the only one. You also need overhead-door clearance if the door tracks run inside the lift’s column footprint, header height at the door opening, and width between the door tracks and the sidewalls. A lift that fits the ceiling but blocks the door is a lift that doesn’t fit.
Our Des Moines hobbyist had 9 feet flat, which limits him to a short-column two-post or a standard four-post — no extended-height column option, because he’d have less than a foot of vehicle clearance at full lift with a Silverado. We spent an hour looking at the actual bay geometry with him and settled on a 4-post design for storage-plus-service. If you’re planning a build, don’t just note ceiling height. Note ceiling-to-open-door clearance, note the height of any exposed joists, and note the width between whatever obstructions are inside the bay. Then bring those numbers to the model comparison.
Model Comparison: BendPak vs. Atlas for the Home Bay
For a hobbyist autolift garage in the Des Moines metro, the two brands that keep coming up in our conversations are BendPak and Atlas. Both make solid four-post home-garage lifts in the 8K to 9K range. BendPak sits at the premium end — thicker steel, tighter fits, longer warranty, and a higher price. Atlas sits at the value end — real capacity, functional safety hardware, less refined finish, and a friendlier sticker.
For a garage that will see maybe 100 lift cycles a year, both brands are more than the customer needs on a duty-cycle basis. The choice comes down to whether the owner values the fit-and-finish and the longer warranty enough to pay the premium. Spec Comparison: Capacity, Runway Length, and Rise Height
The three specs that matter most for a home autolift garage are capacity, runway length, and rise height. Capacity is the easiest — a Silverado 1500 is around 5,300 lb and a Camry is 3,300, so an 8K lift has room to spare for both. Runway length has to match the vehicle wheelbase; a full-size crew-cab pickup wants a runway of at least the crew-cab wheelbase or longer, and the entry ramps need to fit inside the bay depth without hitting the closed overhead door.
Rise height is the sneaky one. A four-post with a nominal 6-foot rise doesn’t actually clear 6 feet of vehicle body underneath — you have to subtract runway thickness and any ramp overhang. On a 9-foot ceiling, our hobbyist’s realistic working height under a Silverado on the lift is closer to 60 inches once you account for the truck’s own height. That’s fine for oil-pan-gasket work — he’ll be sitting on a stool under the front of the truck — but it’s not enough for anyone over six-foot to stand fully upright. Set expectations against actual clearance, not the marketing number.
Engine Oil Pan Gasket Work: What the Lift Configuration Enables
An engine oil pan gasket job is one of the more forgiving lift jobs there is, but it does have a specific geometry requirement: you need clean access to the entire perimeter of the pan, which on a Silverado means the front subframe area has to be reachable without an arm or a runway blocking the pan bolts. That’s why most hobbyists doing this kind of work choose a four-post autolift garage — the runways sit outboard of the pan location, so there’s nothing overhead to fight.
On a two-post you’d have the columns clear of the work zone but you’d need to remove the front crossmember bracket to access some pan bolts, and that can turn a two-hour job into a five-hour job. For a hobbyist who wants to work on his own vehicles occasionally and store them the rest of the time, the four-post is the correct answer for both duties. Our Des Moines customer confirmed this within his first oil-pan job — the lift is up, the pan is down, the gasket is set, done in under three hours from garage door open to garage door closed.
Concrete Check: The Two-Minute Slab Test
Home garage concrete is generally thinner and lower-PSI than shop concrete, and that matters for anchor selection on any autolift garage build. Most Des Moines-area residential slabs run four inches thick at 2,500 to 3,000 PSI, which is right at the edge of what a home-garage four-post needs. Underneath that four inches you might find a vapor barrier and gravel, or you might find fill dirt — and fill dirt under a slab that’s already at the edge of PSI spec is where lifts eventually walk.
The two-minute test we recommend is a simple center-punch check: tap the slab in the four proposed anchor locations with a hammer and a center punch. If the punch bounces cleanly and leaves a bright pin-point mark, you have solid concrete underneath. If the punch sinks or the concrete crumbles around it, you have a problem that needs to be resolved before any anchor goes in. Our hobbyist’s slab tested clean on all four spots. If yours doesn’t, the answer is not to force it — it’s to cut and pour a proper pad or move the lift location.
Power, Air, and the Little Utilities That Get Forgotten
An autolift garage isn’t just the lift — it’s the utilities that let the lift work smoothly. Most four-post home lifts run on a 110V single-phase circuit and pull less than 15 amps, so most existing garage outlets are fine. What often gets forgotten is compressed air. A four-post with an air-operated locking system needs an air line, and that means routing a hose from the compressor or adding a compressor if you don’t have one.
Our Des Moines customer already had a small pancake compressor for tire work but wanted a quieter, higher-CFM unit for the lift and future impact-wrench work. We added a 20-gallon two-stage compressor into his build budget and routed a hard air line to the lift’s air fitting. Total added cost was modest, but it turned the lift from a fussy install into a clean shop setup. When you’re building your checklist, add air, add outlet placement, add a work-light plan, and add a floor drain conversation if the garage is going to see wet wheels in the winter. Those items add up.
The Final Pre-Purchase Sign-Off
Before you place the order, run one last pass through the checklist. Ceiling clearance verified with actual vehicle height in mind, model chosen and understood, capacity and runway length matched to your fleet, rise height set against your work-height expectations, concrete tested and anchor plan drawn, power and air planned, and delivery access mapped from the freight truck’s tail to the bay door. If any item on that list is fuzzy, resolve it before you buy the lift.
