Configuration A: Heavy-Duty Two-Post
A 15,000-lb commercial two-post — the kind of lift we install at independent repair shops daily — gives you full underbody access. Wheels hang free, drain plugs are eye-level, filters are reachable. For a fleet doing oil, transmission, and differential fluid changes, a two-post is the most access-per-cycle you can buy. The downside: raising a truck on a two-post requires arm placement at pinch welds or factory frame points, and that costs time. A skilled tech can spot arms in under a minute; a rushed one takes three.
For a fleet, that time adds up. Forty trucks a month at even two minutes of arm-placement time is over an hour of shop labor. Over ten years, that’s meaningful money — but so is the ergonomic advantage of standing-height oil service. A two-post autolift garage configuration wins on access; it loses on repeatable speed. If your fleet is mixed — different chassis, different pinch weld locations, different pickup points — a two-post is the right tool. If your fleet is homogeneous — same model truck 40 times — a four-post starts to look better.
Configuration B: Four-Post Drive-On
An 18,000 to 30,000-lb four-post drive-on lets a driver roll the truck up the ramps, chock the wheels, and lift. No arm placement, no pinch-weld hunting. For a homogeneous fleet, this is significant: the per-vehicle service time drops by two to four minutes just at load-in. Multiply across 40 trucks a month and you’re gaining back real labor.
The tradeoff: runways obstruct wheels. Oil changes and driveline fluids are fine on a four-post; wheel bearing service, brake work, and tire rotation require a bridge jack that raises the wheels above the runway. Bridge jacks work, but they’re an extra step. For a pure oil-and-fluid-service fleet operation, four-post drive-on is often the productivity winner. For a mixed-service operation where the same lift handles brakes and tires too, two-post might edge it out. Every autolift garage decision for a fleet is a tradeoff between load-in speed and underbody access, and the answer depends on what the fleet actually gets done in a typical week.

Both configurations should be ALI Gold certified. Full stop. ALI Gold is an independent third-party certification that the lift met engineering, load-hold, and safety standards. For a fleet operator, ALI Gold matters for three reasons: insurance underwriters increasingly require it, OSHA-related workplace safety compliance is easier to demonstrate on certified equipment, and liability exposure is significantly lower if something ever happens on a certified lift versus a non-certified one.

Real-world throughput on a two-post for oil service on a mixed fleet: roughly 20 to 25 vehicles per day at a competent tech pace, assuming a straightforward oil change, filter, top-off, and quick inspection. Four-post drive-on for the same work on a homogeneous fleet: roughly 30 to 35 vehicles per day. That’s a meaningful difference if your fleet is 40 trucks and you want to service the whole fleet in a single week.
These numbers assume the shop is organized around the lift — parts staged, fluid dispensers at the lift, drain pans in place. Poorly organized shops don’t hit either number on either configuration. Ten-year cost is usually within a modest premium on the four-post for the added throughput, and the fleet math typically favors four-post if your service mix is 70 percent or more oil-and-fluid work. When to Buy Both
For fleets above 60 vehicles, or fleets with a wide vehicle mix, the answer is often both. A two-post in one bay for tire, brake, and driveline work; a four-post in the adjacent bay for the high-volume oil-and-fluid rotation. Two techs can run parallel: one doing quick oil turns on the four-post, one doing longer service jobs on the two-post. Throughput doubles, and neither lift is the bottleneck.
The install budget for two lifts in adjacent bays is not quite double a single-lift install because we can share freight, share the install team’s travel, and share the electrical drops. If your bay is being built new, plan both from day one — running the electrical and stubbing the concrete for two lifts costs only marginally more than one, and having the option to add the second later at a fraction of the cost is a good hedge. For fleets on a growth curve, an autolift garage bay planned for two lifts and installed with one is often the right compromise.
