For an oil-pan-gasket shop, a four-post is not our first pick — the runways get in the way when you need to drop the pan. But if the same building doubles as overflow storage, or if the fleet includes larger straight trucks that would push a two-post’s arm capacity, the four-post pays for itself. It also punishes the concrete less: the load spreads across four column footprints instead of two. If your building has a slab of unknown age or thickness — a common situation in older southeast Iowa pole barns — a four-post autolift garage can go in without core-drilling and pouring new pads. That alone saves a week of build time. Freight and Curbside Reality for a Southeast Iowa Delivery

The lift ships common carrier LTL on a flatbed truck. If your driveway can’t accommodate a semi with a 53-foot trailer, we flag that during our site survey and reroute the freight to a nearby terminal for pickup, or arrange a smaller straight-truck delivery for a surcharge.
Here’s the piece owners miss. Two-post lift columns arrive strapped together in a single freight pallet weighing 1,600 to 2,000 pounds. A four-post ships as two long runway crates plus a column crate — closer to 3,200 to 4,000 pounds total spread across three pieces. The four-post pieces are individually lighter, but there are more of them, and each one has to come off the truck. If the driver is running curbside-only service and you don’t have a forklift, the two-post’s single-pallet unload might actually be worse than the four-post’s spread load — because 1,800 pounds on one pallet is nothing you’re moving with a floor jack and prayer. Forklift Access, or Working Without One
Not every small-fleet operator owns a forklift. If yours does, the whole staging problem disappears — you unload at the freight door and set the crates aside until installation day. For the install itself, both configurations need lifting help. A two-post’s columns are 1,000 pounds apiece and need to stand up plumb before the overhead bar goes on. A four-post’s runways are 300 pounds each and awkward — you don’t need a forklift, but two techs and a set of engine hoists will do the job in an afternoon. Every lift has a concrete spec printed in the installation manual. A wide two-post rated for 10,000 pounds typically calls for a minimum four-inch slab at 3,000 psi. A four-post rated at 14,000 pounds calls for a similar slab but spreads the load, so a marginal five-inch slab can carry a heavier four-post better than a thicker slab under an underweight two-post. The concrete conversation is where most autolift garage projects either come in on budget or blow up mid-install. If your building’s concrete was poured in 1978 and no one remembers the mix, we bring a Schmidt hammer to the site survey and take readings before we spec anything.
Ceiling height controls the choice as much as the concrete does. A standard two-post needs about 12 feet of clear height under the overhead bar to accommodate a full-size truck at maximum lift. A four-post needs less clear over the runways but more overall to allow a stored vehicle above a working vehicle. Column choice — narrow, wide, or clear-floor — depends on what you’re servicing. Clear-floor gives you unobstructed floor access but doubles the ceiling requirement because the equalizer cables run overhead. In an older southeast Iowa pole building with 12-foot side walls and a peaked ceiling, wide-column asymmetric almost always wins.
