A body shop foreman up in northern Missouri reached out to us this past summer about adding a service bay to what was, at the time, a strictly collision-repair shop. He had been sending exhaust and driveline work down the road to a mechanical shop for years, watching margin walk out the door, and finally decided to keep the work in-house with a proper autolift garage build. His two hard constraints were electrical service — his shop was on 240V single-phase with no three-phase available — and physical access, because collision work meant his bay layout could not compromise on straight-line pull space for the frame rack. Here is the buyer’s guide we walked him through.

Electrical Reality: Single-Phase vs Three-Phase

Every two-post lift on the North American market ships with either a single-phase or a three-phase power unit, and swapping between them is a factory build option, not a field conversion. If your shop is on 240V single-phase — which describes about 70 percent of the independent shops we spec — you order the single-phase power unit. That draws roughly 20 to 25 amps at startup on a two-horse motor and settles down to about 12 amps under normal cycle. A dedicated 30-amp circuit handles it with headroom.

Three-phase, where available, is smoother and cheaper to run over time but requires a 208V or 240V three-phase service at the panel. Most rural body shops in northern Missouri do not have three-phase available without a utility upgrade, which runs five figures. Do not spend that money to save a couple hundred bucks a year on power. The single-phase power unit is fine for daily commercial use — the manufacturers do not gate performance behind the phase option. Order what your panel supports. What Your Panel Needs Before the Lift Arrives

The minimum panel spec for a body-shop autolift garage install on single-phase is a 30-amp double-pole breaker feeding a dedicated 10-gauge run of 20 feet or less to a NEMA 6-30R receptacle within reach of the power-unit mounting point. Longer runs than 20 feet want 8-gauge to keep voltage drop in check. Buried conduit runs across the shop floor to reach an interior column want conduit rated for wet locations and pulled with THHN or equivalent.

Have a licensed electrician do the circuit — this is not the place to save two hundred bucks with a handyman. Body shops carry commercial insurance and the underwriter will pull the electrical permit if there is ever a claim on the bay. If the circuit is not permitted and inspected, the claim can walk. Every commercial autolift garage install we sell to a body shop or fleet includes a checklist of what the electrician needs to deliver before we come out to install. That checklist has kept every one of our installs from getting hung up on power on install day.

Why Exhaust and Driveline Access Matters in a Body Shop

Adding mechanical work to a body shop is a margin play, and the margin comes from doing the work fast. Exhaust and driveline jobs are two of the highest-labor-per-dollar categories in mechanical service — a cat-back on a pickup can bill an hour of labor and take forty-five minutes if the lift is right for the job. That means arm geometry, lifting height, and column layout all matter. Get the wrong lift and the exhaust job that should have been forty-five minutes becomes ninety, and the whole margin play collapses.

For exhaust and driveline access you want a symmetric two-post if you have the column-to-column width, because symmetric puts the columns behind the driver and passenger doors and leaves the entire drivetrain and exhaust path fully accessible with no arm sweep in the way. If width is tight you compromise to an asymmetric with the front arms canted forward, which still gives you good driveline access but starts to interfere with long-wheelbase truck exhaust work. The Missouri shop had 12 feet of column-to-column room and we specced symmetric. That was the right call for the exhaust and driveline mix he was targeting.

The Lift We Specced for the Missouri Shop

Our recommendation for a body-shop autolift garage doing 60 percent exhaust and driveline and 40 percent general mechanical was a Rotary SPO12 symmetric twelve-thousand with the 155-inch column. Twelve-thousand capacity gives him headroom for the three-quarter-ton pickups that come through his collision estimating side. The tall column gets him to 78 inches of lifting height, which lets a tech stand under any pickup without a creeper. Single-phase power unit, 30-amp circuit, standard anchor kit into the existing six-inch slab.

Total quote landed in the mid seven thousands delivered, install added another $1,600, and the electrician’s circuit came in at $650. All-in around ten grand, financed on the 0% twelve-month for a monthly payment under $850 with the ninety-day deferred first payment. The shop hit break-even on the lift inside the first four months of running it, and by month six he was billing more mechanical work than he had budgeted. That is what a right-sized autolift garage does for a body shop that has been leaking mechanical margin to a partner.

Concrete, Anchor, and the Frame Rack Constraint

Body shops have one physical constraint mechanical shops do not: the frame rack. Frame racks want a long straight-line pull path, and putting a two-post lift too close to the rack can compromise that path. On the Missouri install we laid out the lift bay 24 feet from the near end of the frame rack, which gave the rack its full working length and left a clear drive lane between the two operations. If you have a frame rack, sketch the whole shop layout before you commit to the lift location.

Concrete for the two-post install checked out at six inches, 3,500 psi, no cracking around the intended anchor pattern. We cored two plugs to verify. Anchor set was fourteen wedge anchors at manufacturer torque, epoxy-injected on the two holes that came out oversized against the specification. Install was a one-day event with the two techs and a small forklift. Load test at the end of the day used the shop’s own service truck at full curb, held at three positions with signed sign-off on the completion form. That form went into the shop’s equipment file the same day.

Adding Exhaust and Driveline Tools to the Bay

The lift is only half the autolift garage buildout for exhaust work. You also need an exhaust hoist or at least a tall rolling jack that can support a full cat-back assembly during removal. Cutting and welding tools — a plasma cutter and a 220V wire-feed MIG — are usually already in a body shop but may need a dedicated station near the lift. Driveline work adds a transmission jack rated for the vehicles you plan to service; a 1,000 lb capacity table-style jack covers passenger and light truck.

Air supply near the column matters. Body shops usually have plenty of air but the drops may not be positioned for the lift bay. Plan for a drop within eight feet of each column with a quick-connect fitting rated for shop pressure. Impact tools, air chisels, and pneumatic ratchets all pull on that supply during a busy day. The Missouri shop already had good air infrastructure — one of the reasons the mechanical-side add-on made sense — and we did not have to touch the compressor. On any autolift garage buildout, walk the air supply before you finalize the layout.

What This Looks Like Six Months In

Six months after install the Missouri shop was running the two-post lift about six hours a day between exhaust, driveline, brake, and general mechanical work. The foreman told us on the follow-up call that the biggest surprise was how many collision customers said yes to add-on mechanical work when it was quoted alongside the estimate — the attach rate on services like exhaust and driveline was running about 40 percent, which was well above what he had projected. That is why bringing mechanical work in-house is a margin play worth making, and why a properly specced autolift garage pays back fast in the right shop.
