An EV specialty shop owner near the Iowa-Missouri border called us this year with what he thought was a routine question about lifting a Tesla Model 3 for a tire rotation. What we ended up walking through was every myth about an autolift garage that shows up when EV work enters the conversation — pack weight, jack pad locations, high-voltage concerns during a lift, and the build-out sequence that keeps a new EV specialty bay from getting expensive corrections a year in. This piece unpacks the myths we hear most often, in the order they usually come up on the phone.

Myth 1: EVs Are Too Heavy for a Standard Autolift Garage

The most common myth is that an EV needs a specialty lift because the battery pack pushes curb weight past what a standard two-post can handle. Reality: a Model 3 curbs around 4,000 pounds, a Mach-E around 4,900, a Lightning around 6,500 to 7,000, a Rivian R1T around 7,000. Every one of those sits comfortably below the 10,000 lb capacity of a standard SPOA10 or CL10V3 two-post. The heavier full-size EV pickups get closer to the ceiling but still fit. There is no magic EV lift required — the standard fleet-grade lift we install in every autolift garage handles the vast majority of the EV lineup with margin.

Where the myth comes from is confusion between curb weight and lift capacity. Lift capacity is rated as gross vehicle weight the lift can raise, distributed across the four pads. EV curb weight, even for the heavier pickups, is well within a 10,000 lb lift’s rating. If you are servicing full-size electric trucks with cargo loads, we spec a 12,000 or 16,000 lb lift, same as we would for equivalent internal-combustion trucks. Nothing about the lift decision changes because the drivetrain is electric.

Myth 2: You Need Special Jack Pads for EVs

Second common myth: EV battery packs sit so low that standard lift pads do not reach the correct lift points, so you need proprietary pads. Reality: modern EVs have manufacturer-specified lift points that are reachable with the standard rubber pad stack that comes with any Rotary or Challenger lift. Tesla, Ford, GM, Rivian, and Lucid all publish jack pad location diagrams. For most, a stack of standard pads gets you to the lift point without contacting the battery pack.

What is true is that some vehicles need pad extensions or specific pucks to clear certain rocker panels or side skirts. Those are inexpensive add-ons we stock for the common EV models. If your autolift garage will primarily service one or two specific EV platforms, we can pre-configure the pad kit for those vehicles at install. But the base lift does not change. The myth that you need a $20,000 EV-specific lift is exactly that — a myth. A standard ALI Gold two-post is the correct call.

Myth 3: High Voltage Makes Lifting Dangerous

Third myth: EV high-voltage systems make the vehicle unsafe to lift, or require special training just to raise the car. Reality: lifting an EV is no more dangerous than lifting any other vehicle. The high-voltage system is a service concern once you are working on the pack, the motor, or the wiring — it is not a lifting concern. The pads contact frame or pinch weld, same as any other car. The pack stays sealed. No special training is required just to raise an EV.

What does require training is opening the pack, disconnecting the service plug, working on high-voltage cabling, or servicing the electric motors themselves. If your autolift garage is doing that kind of work, your technicians should be certified for the specific brand’s high-voltage protocol. But the lift itself is not part of that training. The lift is the same lift. The safety concern is inside the vehicle, not underneath it.

Myth 4: EV Shops Need a Four-Post for Wheel-Off Service

Fourth myth: since EVs need frequent tire rotations because of the instant torque wear pattern, and rotors and pads still exist, you need a four-post for the drive-on convenience. Reality: a two-post handles all wheel-off work more efficiently than a four-post. On a four-post, you have to drive on and then use a rolling jack to lift the wheels off the platforms. On a two-post, the wheels are off the ground the moment the vehicle is raised. For an EV shop doing rotations, brake service, and suspension work, the two-post is faster.

Where a four-post makes sense is storage — parking a vehicle above another vehicle to save floor space. If your autolift garage build includes a storage bay for customer cars overnight, a four-post can be justified. For active service work, the two-post is the workhorse. The myth that EV shops need drive-on lifts is a hangover from the alignment shop world and does not apply to general EV service.

Myth 5: Build-Out Order Doesn’t Matter

Fifth and most expensive myth: as long as the building has power and concrete, the autolift garage can be built in any order. Reality: sequence matters enormously. The correct order is slab (with lift locations engineered in), electrical rough-in (with the lift’s power drop pre-located), compressed air rough-in (with drops near each lift), lighting rough-in (with fixtures placed to avoid raised-vehicle shadow), then lift install. If you do lighting after the lift, you will drop fixtures directly over where the vehicle will sit and cast shadow onto the underbody exactly where you need to see. If you route air after the lift, the drop will be inconveniently placed.

We do site consults at the framing stage for exactly this reason. Ten minutes of planning with the lift installer during framing saves thousands in electrical reroutes later. The autolift garage sequence is one of the few build decisions where getting it right up front is dramatically cheaper than fixing it later.

Myth 6: You Can Save Money by Skipping the ALI-Certified Lift

Sixth myth: overseas import lifts at half the price are fine for an EV shop because the loads are similar. Reality: the difference between an ALI Gold certified lift and an uncertified import is not the first year — it is the tenth year, and the day a cylinder fails with a vehicle raised. The insurance implications alone make uncertified lifts a poor choice for a commercial EV shop. Most commercial auto insurance policies require ALI Gold certified equipment. Discovering that after a claim is bad news.

The purchase price delta amortizes over a decade of trouble-free operation. Skip this myth. Buy the certified lift.

The Correct Sequence and What to Do Next

The correct build-out sequence for an EV specialty autolift garage on the Iowa-Missouri border is: engineer the slab with lift locations known, rough-in electrical with lift power drops sized correctly, rough-in compressed air with drops at each lift column, place lighting to avoid shadow patterns on the underbody, install lift, finalize walls and floor coating, and open.
