A grain-farm operator in southwest Iowa called us in early summer asking for help speccing an autolift garage inside a new 40-by-60 pole barn that would double as a shop. He wanted to service his own farm pickups, do engine oil pan gasket work on a 2011 F-250, and occasionally lift a smaller service truck to change fluids and inspect u-joints. He also wanted a lift he could store his son’s project car on during winter. Farm shops have a specific set of constraints — ceiling geometry, concrete you may have just poured, and a fleet mix that runs light on cars and heavy on three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks. This is the pre-purchase checklist we walked with him.

Fleet Mix First: Size the Lift for the Truck, Not the Car

Farm shops almost always underestimate the truck side of their fleet mix when they spec an autolift garage. Our southwest Iowa customer initially asked about a 9K lift because he was thinking about the project car and the half-ton. His F-250 in real-world loaded weight is closer to 8,300 pounds. Add a set of tools in the bed and a fifth-wheel hitch and you’re pushing 8,600. A 9K lift technically covers that, but there’s no meaningful safety margin.

The right answer for a mixed-fleet farm shop is a 12K asymmetric two-post at minimum, and honestly a 15K if there’s any chance of a one-ton or a service body ever ending up in the bay. That’s not overbuying — that’s sizing to the truck that’s already on the property. The project car and the half-ton become easy work at that capacity. When you’re speccing an autolift garage for a farm operation, list every vehicle you might ever put on it, take the heaviest one at loaded weight, and add twenty percent. That’s the number you buy against.

Pole Barn Ceiling: What 14 Feet Really Gives You

The southwest Iowa customer’s pole barn had 14-foot sidewalls, which is common for farm builds and generous by autolift garage standards. That ceiling height enables extended-height two-post columns, which give you an extra 12 to 18 inches of rise over standard columns. For an F-250 that’s the difference between working with the truck at chest height and working with it at chin-tuck height — meaningful over the course of a long oil-pan gasket job.

The catch with pole barns is that the sidewall height is often not the same as the ceiling height at the peak — and lifts don’t live at the peak, they live somewhere on the wall side of it. Measure at the actual column location, not the peak. Also check for horizontal purlin runs and any exposed trusses that might interfere with a full-lift cycle. Our customer had a clean 13-foot 6-inch clearance at his chosen lift location, which was plenty for the extended-height option. If you have a pole barn build in progress, spec the lift location before the trusses go up so the geometry works from the start.

Concrete: Fresh Pour, Existing Slab, and the Cure Question

Farm shops often mean fresh concrete, and fresh concrete needs time to cure before you can anchor a lift into it. Full 28-day cure at 3,000 PSI is the standard, and skipping that clock is a real way to end up with anchors that hold on install day and are loose six months later. Our southwest Iowa customer had poured his slab three weeks before the lift was scheduled to arrive, so we pushed the install a week to hit the 28-day mark.

For an autolift garage on fresh concrete, spec 5-inch thickness at minimum, use 4,000 PSI mix rather than 3,000 if you can afford it, and lay #4 rebar on 12-inch centers with the mat at mid-depth. That gives you the anchoring substrate that will hold up under fifteen years of Iowa freeze-thaw. If the pour is already down and you’re not sure what you got, ask the contractor for the mix ticket and the rebar count — most contractors will have a copy. If they can’t produce one, spend the money on a core sample. Anchors are only as good as what they’re anchored into.

Oil Pan Gasket Work on the F-250: Configuration Notes

Engine oil pan gasket work on a Ford Super Duty diesel is a job with specific geometry. The pan sits between the front sub-frame rails and the crossmember, and depending on model year you may need to lift or unbolt the engine to clear the pan for full removal. On a two-post autolift garage, the good news is your columns are outboard of the engine bay — no runway to fight — and you have clear vertical access to lower the pan straight down.

For our farm customer we set up his 12K asymmetric with the truck-adapter pinch-clamp set to catch the frame at the manufacturer’s front lift points, plus a set of the tall extension pads for extra ground clearance during the pan drop. The whole job took him a Saturday, working alone, with a pause to run to town for a longer breaker bar. Without the correct pad set he’d have been fighting the arms on every pan bolt. Buy the right pads for the trucks you actually own. It’s a couple hundred dollars that saves you hours.

Storage Duty: When to Add a Second Lift

Our southwest Iowa customer wanted to store his son’s project car over the winter on the same lift he’d be using for farm-truck work. We had a long conversation about whether that was going to be practical in a working autolift garage, and we landed on adding a smaller storage-only four-post along the sidewall as a phase-two project. The reason is workflow: if the project car lives on the working lift, you can’t lower it when you need to service a truck, and either the truck work waits or the car has to come down every time.

A four-post home-storage lift alongside the working two-post gives you both duties without either compromising the other. Phase one was the two-post; phase two, coming this fall, is a BendPak or Atlas four-post at the sidewall. Total cost across both phases is well under what most farmers spend on a used skid-loader, and the shop functionality is worth every dollar. If your farm operation is thinking one-lift, think twice — most builds end up wanting two.

Electrical and Compressed Air in a Pole Barn

Pole-barn electrical is typically simpler than shop electrical because you’re often running from a single subpanel serving lights, outlets, and the lift. Our farm customer’s barn had a 200A subpanel — plenty of headroom — and we spec’d a dedicated 220V, 30A circuit for the two-post plus a 110V drop for the future four-post’s motor and safety-lock solenoid. Total electrician time on install day was under two hours.

Compressed air is often the bigger investment. Farm shops need real air capacity for impact wrenches, tire-changer work, and any pneumatic tools. Our customer already had a 60-gallon two-stage compressor he’d owned for a decade, which was more than enough for the lift’s air-lock and his hand tools. If you’re building an autolift garage from scratch, plan for at least a 60-gallon two-stage compressor and a hard-plumbed air line to the lift location. That’s the difference between a functional shop and a frustrating one.

Delivery Access, Install Day, and the First Weekend

Freight access is the last item on any farm autolift garage checklist and it’s the item most often overlooked. Our southwest Iowa customer’s driveway was a quarter-mile gravel run from the county road to the pole barn, and the freight carrier’s tractor-trailer was going to have to navigate it in the delivery week. We coordinated with the carrier for a smaller straight-truck delivery, which cost a modest upcharge but avoided the risk of a stuck tractor and a shipment sent back.

Install day was a one-day job for our crew, and the customer had his first oil change on the F-250 up the following Saturday.
