Daily Pre-Use Inspection — What Every Operator Checks

Every lift cycle starts with a daily pre-use visual. The operator walks the lift and checks: hydraulic fluid puddling under the pump or columns (a wet spot is a leaking seal), cable condition on cable-driven models (any broken strand is an immediate out-of-service call), arm-restraint engagement (the lock should audibly engage when arms move), and lock-ladder function on the columns (the safety latch should click into place at each height).

Once drift is measurable — say, an inch over 10 minutes with a full load — the seals are failing and the cylinder needs a rebuild kit installed. Ignoring drift is dangerous because the failure isn’t graceful; a seal can fail catastrophically.

CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work on the Lift Itself

Municipal fleets do a lot of CV axle and half-shaft replacement — pickups, plow trucks, and light-duty utility vehicles wear axles hard. On a two-post lift, CV work is straightforward: pop the wheel, hang the strut, drive the axle out. On a four-post with a bridge jack, CV work requires raising the wheels off the runways to remove the axle without the runway in the way. Both work; both have quirks.

Safety-first on CV work: chock the opposite wheels, engage the safety lock on the lift, use jack stands on the strut before pulling anything, and NEVER stand under a suspended axle. The lift is only one of your safety points; the whole workflow needs backup. A well-set-up autolift garage bay has a stack of jack stands, a proper strut spreader, and a torque wrench dedicated to axle nut torque (which is usually well above 200 ft-lb).
