A southeast Iowa RV and trailer service shop we worked with last year is now twelve months into their first autolift garage, and the shop owner asked if we would put their story down in writing so other RV shops could benefit. Their build was a little different from the typical two-post automotive install because the vehicle mix is mostly enclosed cargo trailers, small travel trailers, and utility trailers, with occasional Class B and truck-camper units mixed in. The lift decisions, the bay layout, and the workflow all had to bend around those vehicle shapes. Install Week: What We Learned About Trailer Geometry

The install itself was straightforward: two four-post lifts with extended-length runways, one 14,000 lb and one 18,000 lb, spaced far enough apart that the shop could pull a truck-and-trailer combination into either bay. What was not straightforward was how quickly we learned that trailer geometry is nothing like passenger vehicle geometry. Trailer wheel spacing varies dramatically, from a single narrow axle on a compact utility trailer to tandem or triple axles spread across seven or eight feet. The runway crossbars needed to accommodate all of it without blocking axle access.

Our first install-week adjustment was moving the crossbars slightly on the 14,000 lb lift so that both a common single-axle enclosed trailer and a tandem-axle travel trailer would sit cleanly on the runways with clear access to all wheel positions. Small adjustment, big workflow win. Every autolift garage that will handle trailers should plan for this at install rather than after. If you are ordering a lift for RV or trailer work, tell your installer the range of axle spacings you expect to see and get the crossbar positions right the first time.

Month Two: Learning the Loading Sequence

Loading a trailer onto a four-post lift is different from loading a car. On a car, you drive up, stop when the wheels are centered, set the parking brake, and lift. On a trailer, you back up, watch the mirrors as the wheels find the runway, stop when the axles are positioned to give clear access under the trailer, chock the wheels, and only then lift. Backing accuracy matters more than driving accuracy, and shop technicians who came from car work needed a few weeks to build the muscle memory.

By month two the shop had settled into a repeatable loading sequence with color-coded runway markers taped to the lift for common axle spacings. Single-axle trailers park with the axle above the red marker. Tandem-axle trailers park with the front axle above the yellow marker. Bigger travel trailers park with the front axle above the green marker. The markers are silly-looking but they eliminate a lot of measurement time on every job, and they let the shop turn a trailer service in significantly less time than they were doing at the beginning. Month Four: Seasonal Storage Becomes a Real Business Line

The original business plan called for the lifts to be used for service work only, with storage as an occasional favor for regular customers. By month four that assumption had inverted. The shop was fielding calls from local RV and trailer owners who wanted to park their unit on a lift for the off-season, off the ground and away from tire flat-spotting, mice, and moisture. The shop started offering paid seasonal storage as a formal service line, and it became a meaningful revenue stream over the winter.

The autolift garage worked for this use case because four-post lifts are safety-rated for extended parking. The units sit on the safety locks, not the hydraulics, so there is no bleed-down and no fluid stress across months of storage. The shop added a small monthly fee per stored unit and quickly filled both lifts through the winter. Month Six: Layout Tweaks for Workflow

Halfway through the first year the shop made two layout changes based on what they had learned. First, they added a rolling parts cart that lives between the two lifts, so a technician can transfer tools and parts between bays without walking around the outside of the shop. Second, they moved the compressed air drop for each lift about two feet closer to the rear axle position, because trailer work happens at the rear more often than at the front. Both changes were minor. Both saved real time.

Workflow adjustments are the kind of learning that only comes from actually running the shop. Our advice for any new autolift garage owner is to avoid the temptation to build the perfect workspace on day one. Get the lifts installed, run the shop for two or three months, and then look at what is actually costing you time. The parts cart, the air drop position, and even lighting angles will all get better with a small round of adjustments after you have real data. Do not epoxy the floor until you have run the shop long enough to know where the wear paths actually are.

Month Eight: The First Real Problem

Eight months in, a leveling valve on the 18,000 lb lift started sticking. The lift would come up unevenly and require a couple of pumps of the hydraulic override to level out. Nothing catastrophic, but a real service issue that needed attention before it got worse. The shop called us on a Wednesday, we shipped the replacement valve overnight, and their in-house technician swapped it in on Friday morning. Total downtime: one working day. Total cost: less than a single day’s revenue from the affected bay.

This is the kind of thing that will happen to every autolift garage eventually. A component ages, a small failure develops, and the question is not whether it happens but how fast it gets fixed. Two things made this fast recovery possible. First, the shop had our number and their lift model number in the same place, so the call took five minutes. Second, we stock the common service parts for the lift models we sell, so the part was on a truck the same day. If your seller cannot promise both of those things, buy from someone who can.

Month Ten: Adding a Third Bay in the Plan

By month ten the shop was regularly at capacity during peak service season and turning away work. The owner started scoping a third bay in an adjacent lease space that would open up the following spring. The lift decision this time was easier because they now had ten months of real usage data. They knew which trailer sizes came in most often, which axle spacings mattered, and how much lift capacity they actually used at peak. The third bay is scheduled to get another 18,000 lb four-post, spec’d nearly identically to the current heavier unit.

This is the pattern we see with successful autolift garage shops. The first lift is a leap of faith based on projections. The second and third lifts are engineering decisions based on data. If you are planning a multi-lift shop, do not try to solve it all on day one. Buy the first lift, run the shop, and let the actual workload teach you what the next lift should be.
