A weekend hobbyist mechanic out near the Iowa-Nebraska border emailed us last fall about setting up a small autolift garage in his 24×30 detached to handle the wheel bearing, brake, and suspension work he had been doing on jack stands for twenty years. He was in his fifties, tired of crawling under cars, and wanted a lift that would let him pull hubs and press bearings without the arms getting in the way of the wheel well. He was not going to run a business off it. He just wanted a real garage. Here is the pre-purchase checklist we sent him, which we now send anyone in the same spot.

Checklist Item One: Wheels-Free or Nothing

Wheel bearing work needs the hub off the ground with the suspension hanging. That means a two-post lift, a scissor with the wheels-free rear extension, or a rolling-jack setup on a four-post — not a plain four-post storage lift. If your primary use case is bearings, brakes, tie rods, ball joints, control arms, or any other suspension-out job, do not buy a straight four-post no matter how much cheaper it is. You will regret it inside three jobs. A proper autolift garage build for a hands-on hobbyist starts with a two-post as the default.

The exception is if you have room and budget for two lifts — a four-post for storage and long jobs, a mid-rise scissor for wheel work. That is a beautiful setup and we install it for guys who have earned it. If it is one lift, it is a two-post. Nine-thousand-pound capacity is enough for anything short of a three-quarter-ton diesel. Ten thousand gives you headroom without much price difference. We would not go below 9,000 lb even for a Miata-only shop because the columns and arms on a 6,000 lb unit are always thinner and the geometry is compromised.

Checklist Item Two: Ceiling Height Before Anything Else

Measure the truss height, not the peak. Two-post columns are typically 145 to 165 inches tall, and the overhead bar or the shut-off arm on a symmetric layout adds a few more inches. In a 24×30 detached with a 10-foot side wall and gable trusses, you often have twelve to fourteen feet of clear at the peak but only ten feet at the truss chord. That is not enough for a standard-height two-post. You either raise the ceiling, buy a low-clearance model with 128-inch columns and a floor-plate design, or build a different plan.

Low-clearance two-posts exist — the Rotary SPOA9-LC and equivalents from Challenger and BendPak — and they work fine for passenger cars up to about 71 inches under the frame at full extension. That is a real compromise on truck work but it is a workable ceiling-limited autolift garage setup for a car guy who is not planning to store an F-250 on it. Every quote we build starts with two measurements: your truss height at the intended install location and your intended vehicle mix. Get those two right and the rest of the specs fall out.

Checklist Item Three: Model Number and Spec Comparison

The realistic shortlist for a hobbyist autolift garage in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range is Rotary SPOA9 or SPOA10, Challenger E10 or CL10, BendPak XPR-10AS, and Atlas PV10P. All ALI-certified, all with two-stage or three-stage arms, all in a similar price band. The differences are in the details: column steel gauge, cable-routed vs chain-drive equalization, arm restraint mechanism, and warranty length. Rotary and Challenger both use direct-drive hydraulic equalization which is the design we prefer for long-term reliability.

Overall height on the SPOA10 is 145 inches, on the CL10 it is 144, on the XPR-10AS it is 145. Maximum lifting height is 71 inches on the SPOA10 asymmetric, 73 on the CL10, 71.7 on the BendPak. Arm reach ranges 25 to 40 inches on the front on all three. For wheel bearing work the spec that matters most is the arm restraint — you want a positive mechanical lock, not a friction gear, so the arm cannot swing while you are pulling a hub. Rotary and Challenger both have this. BendPak’s newer XPR series does too. Anything without it we would skip.

Checklist Item Four: Concrete and Anchoring

You need a minimum four-inch concrete slab poured to 3,000 psi minimum for any two-post. Most detached garages built after 2000 are pouring four to six inches with 3,000 to 4,000 psi mix and fiber or wire mesh, which is fine. Garages built before 1980 are often three-inch slabs on questionable base and you have to cut and repour a pad before the install. We come out and core a plug to verify thickness and psi if you do not know. It is a fifty-dollar job that saves you from setting anchors in a slab that will crack out.

Anchor pattern on most two-posts is fourteen wedge anchors — seven per column — set with a rotary hammer and a specific bit size the manufacturer publishes. Torque spec matters. Under-torqued anchors work loose over the first year of use; over-torqued anchors crush the base metal and lose holding power. We use a calibrated torque wrench on every install. If you are doing a self-install, buy or borrow one. This is not the place to eyeball it. Every autolift garage failure we have been called out to investigate has traced back to anchoring or concrete, never to the lift itself.

Checklist Item Five: Power and the Panel

Standard two-post lifts run on 220V single-phase 20 to 30 amp circuits. Most detached garages built recently already have this available for welders or air compressors. If yours does not, you are looking at a licensed electrician to pull a 30-amp circuit from the house panel, which runs $400 to $1,200 depending on distance and whether they have to trench for buried conduit. That is not a lift cost but it is an autolift garage cost you have to budget.

Three-phase two-post options exist for shops that have it, but for a home garage you will be on single-phase. The power unit is going to be either a two-horse or three-horse motor pulling 15 to 25 amps at startup. A 30-amp circuit handles it comfortably. Do not run the lift off a 20-amp circuit even if the nameplate says it works — you will trip the breaker on cold-weather startups when the hydraulic fluid is thick, and that gets old fast. Spec the panel for headroom, not for the minimum.

Checklist Item Six: The Accessories That Actually Matter

Frame-cradle pads are worth the money on any lift you will use for wheel bearing and suspension work. The stock rubber pads that ship with most lifts are fine for basic contact but they distort under a heavily loaded truck and can slip on ice-plated frame rails in winter. The bolt-on cradle pad set adds better contact and better stability for $150 to $250 depending on the lift. Get them at time of purchase, not later.

Truck adapters — the tall steel extensions that reach up to a truck frame — matter if you do any three-quarter-ton or one-ton work. Most manufacturers include one pair, we recommend a second pair so you have four. Swing-out drip trays are worth the fifty bucks. Rolling stools, hydraulic jacks, and the rest of the shop wishlist can wait. On the autolift garage buys we help spec, the accessory that customers most often skip and later regret is the second set of frame adapters. Buy them with the lift.

Checklist Item Seven: What This All Costs

A fully specced 10,000 lb two-post autolift garage build for a home shop lands roughly like this: lift $4,800 to $6,200, freight $250 to $450, install $1,200 to $1,800, accessory pack $400 to $700, panel and circuit work $400 to $1,200 if you need it. All in, most home builds land between $7,000 and $10,000. Financing at 0% APR for twelve months brings the monthly to a very manageable number, and the tax deduction on the equipment if you have any Schedule C income can knock the effective cost down another 20-plus percent depending on your bracket.
