Cable failure is rare when maintenance is done right, and catastrophic when it is not. Understand What the Cable Does Before You Inspect It

An autolift garage two-post uses hydraulic cylinders to raise the carriages, but the cylinders alone do not guarantee that the two sides rise together. The equalizer cable system, sometimes called the synchronization or slave cable, physically ties the two carriages together through a set of sheaves and guides. When one side tries to move faster than the other, the cable pulls the slower side up to match. Loss of cable integrity means loss of side-to-side sync, which means a lifted vehicle can go crooked, which means the load can shift off the arm pads.

Different manufacturers route cables differently. Some run them across the top through the overhead crossbar; others route them through a baseplate at the floor. Overhead routing is easier to inspect visually but harder to service if the cable needs to come out. Baseplate routing hides the cable in a floor channel where it can accumulate debris. For a Sioux City tire shop with high dust and rubber-crumb loading, baseplate routing needs more frequent cleaning than a typical overhead system, and we spec accordingly.

Daily Visual Check: Two Minutes Before First Job

Every morning before the first vehicle goes on the lift, the technician does a two-minute visual walk around each column and looks at three things. First, are the cables sitting cleanly in their sheaves at the top and bottom of each column? Second, is there any obvious fraying, kinking, or fluid staining on the visible cable runs? Third, does the cable tension feel taut when firmly pressed with a gloved hand at mid-run? None of this is a torque-spec measurement. It is a pattern-recognition check.

The Sioux City shop built this into their opening routine along with the compressor drain check and the coffee pot. It takes about 90 seconds per lift and it catches the vast majority of cable issues before they become emergencies. If any of the three visual checks looks off, the lift stays out of service until it is looked at more closely. We have replaced cables that would have failed within a week because a technician noticed a small fraying pattern on a Monday morning that would have been ignored if the check was not routine. Build the daily habit.

Monthly Detailed Inspection: Fifteen Minutes Per Lift

Once a month, the shop does a longer inspection with the lift at chest height and the safety locks engaged. The technician runs a rag along every accessible cable inch, feeling for burrs, broken strands, and rust bloom. Any broken wire strand is a red flag. Manufacturers typically call for cable replacement at more than a certain number of broken wires per foot of cable, but our rule is stricter: any broken strand starts the replacement countdown. If you see one broken wire, schedule the replacement within thirty days. Do not wait for the manufacturer minimum.

Sheave condition matters as much as cable condition. Sheaves that develop grooves or edge wear can accelerate cable wear even on a healthy cable. Run a fingernail along the sheave groove and feel for any lip or ridge. Smooth is good. Ridged means the sheave is scoring the cable slightly on every cycle. Sheave replacement is not glamorous, but it doubles the useful life of the next cable. In an autolift garage that turns cables every three to four years, replacing sheaves at the same time is cheap insurance.

Cable Tension: When and How to Adjust

Cables stretch over their life. A brand new cable will elongate slightly during the first hundred cycles as the strands seat themselves, and it will continue to elongate more slowly across the years. Every autolift garage should have a documented tension check and adjustment interval. Our default recommendation is a tension check every six months, or immediately after any incident where a vehicle rose visibly out of level.

Tension adjustment is done at the adjustment nuts on the cable ends, typically hidden inside the top of a column or under the baseplate. Loosen the lock nut, take up slack with the adjustment nut a small amount at a time, and re-lock. Do not overtighten. The goal is a taut cable that does not deflect more than an inch or so under moderate hand pressure at mid-run. Overtightening damages sheaves and stretches cables faster. The Sioux City shop keeps a small logbook next to each lift with the last tension adjustment date, which makes the six-month cadence easy to hold.

Replacement Intervals: The Rules of Thumb That Work

Cable life on a two-post autolift garage varies with duty cycle and environment. Light-duty home use might get 10 to 15 years on the original cables. A single-bay commercial shop doing 20 to 30 cycles a day is typically in the 5 to 7 year range. A high-volume tire shop doing 60 to 80 cycles a day should plan on a 3 to 4 year replacement cycle, sometimes shorter depending on the specific cable spec. The Sioux City shop replaces cables on a documented four-year rotation regardless of visual condition, because that is what their duty cycle and their insurance carrier both push toward.

Environmental factors accelerate wear. Salt spray from winter Iowa roads, brake dust, tire crumb, and any petroleum spill that soaks into a cable all shorten life. If your autolift garage sits in a corrosive or dirty environment, tighten the replacement interval by a year. Cables that show pitting from surface rust should be replaced immediately regardless of age; rust is a stress concentrator that turns a healthy strand into a snap point. When in doubt, replace. Cables are cheap. Cable failure is not.

What Actually Happens in a Cable Failure

We have been called in twice in the last five years to autolift garage cable failures on lifts we did not install. Neither failure resulted in a dropped vehicle, and both are cautionary tales worth telling. In one, a cable snapped mid-lift with a passenger sedan on the arms. The safety locks caught within two inches, the vehicle stayed upright, and the technician on the floor was startled but unhurt. The other, a cable frayed to failure under a light truck; same outcome. In both cases the shops had ignored obvious visible fraying for months.

The safety lock system is what saves you when a cable fails. That is the entire reason redundant mechanical locks are required on ALI Gold Label lifts. But the safety lock is a last-line defense, not a maintenance plan. Every one of the failures we have inspected would have been prevented by a two-minute daily visual and a monthly detailed check. This is not expensive. It is not complicated. It is just discipline. Bake it into the opening routine and the replacement cycle handles itself.

When you replace cables, order OEM or quality-branded replacements. The savings on a cheap import cable are trivial compared to the cost of an early failure and downtime. Match the cable to the exact lift model, because length, end fitting, and rated strength vary across brands and even across model years within a brand. Have your lift model number and serial number handy when you call for cables; we can look up the specific part in our system in about a minute.

Installation is a real skill. New cables need to be seated in the sheaves properly, tensioned correctly, and the lift needs to be cycled a few times under gradual load to seat the cables before it goes back into full service.
