A third-generation family-owned garage in Cedar Rapids came to us this spring wrestling with a used-vs-new decision on their next autolift garage bay. The current owner — the grandson — was looking at the third seat and wanted to spec it around CV axle and half-shaft work, which had become 30 percent of their book after a decade of buying front-wheel-drive replacement work from a neighboring dealer that shut down. He had two live quotes on his desk: a fourteen-year-old commercial two-post out of a closed muffler shop, and a new mid-tier symmetric ten-thousand. We drove up to look at both.

The Cedar Rapids Bay and What CV Work Demands
The shop is a 60×80 concrete-block building on the north side of Cedar Rapids with three service bays and a two-bay body shop attached. Ceiling clearance is thirteen feet six under the truss with no obstructions. Concrete is a six-inch pour done in 2004 with heavy rebar and a fiber additive, tight, no cracks. The bay in question had a decommissioned inground twin post they had scrapped in 2019, leaving a filled pit and a level slab. Power was 200-amp three-phase, which opens up a wider set of options.
CV axle and half-shaft work is not particularly demanding on the lift itself — capacity is not the issue on a front-wheel-drive passenger car, and lifting height only needs to hit standard adjust-and-remove range. What CV work does demand is arm geometry that lets you swing the front wheel down, work in the wheel well with an air-hammer, and pull the shaft without the arm being in the way. That means a good asymmetric or a well-designed symmetric with front-arm reach past 32 inches. Almost any autolift garage two-post from a top-four brand meets that spec if it is in good repair, which is the whole question with used units.
The Used Candidate: A Fourteen-Year-Old Commercial Two-Post
The used lift on offer was a symmetric ten-thousand from a name-brand manufacturer, uninstalled but still standing in the previous shop when we inspected. Fourteen years old, one owner, ran daily in a muffler shop until the shop closed. Ask was $2,400. That is roughly 40 percent of the new equivalent. Column steel looked clean, powder coat was scuffed but not rusted through, hydraulic cylinders were dry with no leaks visible at the top gland or the piston seal. Cables were the original set with fourteen years of service on them.
Fourteen years on original cables is a hard no from us. Manufacturer service life on lifting cables is ten to fifteen years even under light use, and this set had been under commercial daily service. We would not certify that lift for return to service without replacing all four cables — a $600 to $900 parts cost plus four to six hours labor. Add a full cylinder reseal at $500 and you are at $3,600 to $4,000 all-in before you install it. New install runs about the same as installing a used unit. So the real used-vs-new number for this autolift garage build was $3,900 used-refurb versus $6,500 new. A $2,600 delta.
The New Candidate and What the Extra Money Buys
The new quote was a current-generation Rotary SPO10 symmetric ten-thousand with the standard 145-inch column, three-stage front and two-stage rear arms, and factory-fresh cables and cylinders. $5,500 delivered, warranty five years structural and two years on hydraulic components. Fresh anchor kit, current-revision safety-lock mechanism, and the arm-restraint update Rotary rolled out in 2019 that adds a positive pin-latch on every arm — that update alone is worth a hundred bucks a year in reduced arm-swing risk on production work.
What the $2,600 delta buys you in real terms: a fresh set of cables with a full service-life clock starting at zero, cylinders you know the seal history on, current-revision safety hardware, factory warranty coverage for at least five years, and no personal time spent refurbishing and inspecting. On a working autolift garage doing 12 to 20 lifted jobs a day, that is money worth spending. On a low-volume hobby setup it might be different math. For a shop billing at $130 an hour it is almost never worth chasing the used deal unless the used lift is one to three years old with documented service history.
Real Dimensions the Owner Cared About
Under-lift working clearance was the number the owner kept coming back to. On the SPO10 symmetric, maximum lifting height under the frame is 74 inches. That puts a five-foot-ten tech standing straight up under most passenger cars and one-ton pickups. On the used unit, spec height was 71 inches — cable stretch over fourteen years likely brought that to 70 inches or slightly less. That three-inch difference matters when a tech is pulling a CV axle and needs to reach into a wheel well with an air chisel.
Column-to-column drive-through width was another factor. Both lifts spec 100 inches inside the columns, which handles anything up to a Ford Excursion. Overall column height was 145 inches on new, 144 on used. Column base-plate dimension — the footprint that has to sit on clean concrete — was 20×20 on new versus 18×18 on the older unit. That is one of the quiet upgrades between generations: bigger base plates spread the load and reduce concrete spalling around the anchor set. A small thing, but on a shop that plans to run the lift for the next twenty years, it matters.
The Used-vs-New Framework We Actually Use
We work every autolift garage used-vs-new question through the same framework: age, service history, cable status, cylinder status, safety-hardware revision, and total refurbish cost. If the used unit is under five years old with documented service, factory-original cables still under mid-service-life, and no cylinder or safety issues — buy used if the price is right. That happens rarely. If the used unit is over ten years old or has unknown service history, price the full refurbish (cables, seals, latches, hardware) and add it to the ask before comparing to new.
In practice, the used-refurb number usually lands within 20 percent of new. When that is the case, buy new every time. The warranty alone is worth the delta, and the peace of mind for a family shop that will pass the equipment to the next generation is not measurable but it is real. The Install and the Ex-Inground Slab
The filled-in inground pit was the technical wrinkle. The previous owner had cut the old inground, dropped the tank, filled with clean pea gravel, and topped with a six-inch pour tied to the existing slab. Structurally that is fine for supporting a surface-mount two-post — the load path goes through the columns to the anchor set, which we can set into either the original slab or the new pour as long as thickness and psi check. We cored a plug on both sides of the fill line and both came back at 3,500 psi minimum and full six inches. That is a good pour.
Anchor pattern was set entirely on the fill-side pour to keep the load off the seam between old and new concrete. Fourteen wedge anchors, torqued to Rotary spec with a calibrated wrench, epoxy-injected on any hole that came out oversized. Install ran a normal one-day timeline. The lift was in service by the end of the following business day. That kind of continuity is what a working autolift garage buyer is paying for when they hire an experienced installer versus buying online and self-installing over three weekends.
What We Would Tell the Next Family Shop
If you are running a multi-generation shop and looking at your next lift, the honest answer is almost always new. The delta over refurbished used is small once you count the real refresh cost, and the value in warranty, safety updates, and factory backing is worth every dollar. Do not chase the used listing on Facebook Marketplace unless you can inspect it running with a real tech and see documented service records. Anything else is a project you did not sign up for.
