An RV and trailer service shop autolift garage is a different creature than any passenger-vehicle lift setup, and the first year of ownership tells you almost everything about whether you specced it right. This story follows a central Iowa RV and trailer shop from the electrical planning phase through the install day, the ninety-day re-torque, and the first honest-to-goodness service call at month eleven. Details are anonymized because the shop asked us to write about their experience without naming them. Every technical decision here is real, and the electrical circuit and phase question that drives so much of a heavy-duty lift purchase gets the honest treatment it usually does not get in a sales brochure. Month Zero: The Electrical Planning Conversation

The first conversation with this central Iowa RV shop was entirely about electrical service. Heavy-duty lifts pull real power. A single 30,000 pound four-post typically wants a three-phase motor at 208V or 230V, drawing thirty amps at start. Mobile column lifts for RV work run in sets of four or six columns, each with its own motor, and the total service draw at simultaneous full lift is substantial. The shop had a 200-amp single-phase service and no three-phase. That constrained the lift choice immediately.

Two options existed. Option one: pay the utility to bring three-phase to the building, a several-thousand-dollar undertaking with a lead time measured in months. Option two: buy single-phase-compatible mobile column lifts and a heavy-duty two-post rated for single phase. We priced both. Utility three-phase upgrade came in higher than the incremental lift cost, so the shop went with single-phase-compatible equipment. That decision shaped every subsequent step of the first-year autolift garage story.

Month One: Ordering, Delivery, and Site Prep

With the electrical path settled, we ordered a set of four Rotary mobile column lifts in the single-phase configuration and one heavy-duty two-post for chassis work on smaller trailers. Lead time from order to delivery was several weeks for the mobile columns and stocked availability on the two-post. During those weeks the shop had their electrician run the dedicated 220V circuits to the two-post bay and add the outlet ring for the mobile columns to plug into at any bay position.

Site prep for a heavy-duty autolift garage is more involved than for a passenger shop. Slab thickness verification was done at six points across the shop, not four. We found one weak spot near the overhead door where the original pour had thinned, and we adjusted the mobile column parking pattern to avoid that area. The heavy-duty two-post got installed in the strongest confirmed slab area at the back of the shop. Preventing an install day surprise cost about two hours of test drilling and saved days of downtime that would have hit later.

Install Day: Two-Post First, Mobile Columns Second

Install day ran over two consecutive days. The heavy-duty two-post went in first, anchors set into confirmed slab, torque verified, level shimmed to spec. Total install time was about seven hours from truck arrival to first test lift. The mobile columns arrived the same afternoon and were commissioned the following day: batteries charged, communication radios paired, load tests run on each column individually, then a full four-column synchronized lift with a test weight.

Exhaust and driveline access on the mobile column configuration is exceptional, which is what the shop needed most. Wheels-under lifting means the tech can walk the entire length of an RV chassis without a runway in the way. For the trailer work the two-post handles chassis-only trailers and small tow-behind service. The autolift garage was operational at close of day two. The first paying customer went on a lift within a week.

Month Three: The Scheduled Re-Torque Visit

At ninety days post-install we came back for the scheduled re-torque and inspection visit. Anchors settled roughly as expected, which is normal in the first ninety days. All twelve anchor points across the two-post columns needed a fractional torque adjustment. The mobile column bases sit on flat floor and do not require anchor torque, but we did inspect the wheel bearings, the sync radios, and the hydraulic reservoirs on each column.

One finding surprised us. A minor hydraulic weep at one column’s connection fitting had started, likely from shipping vibration loosening the fitting. We tightened it, wiped the weep clean, and marked it for re-inspection in thirty days. On the next visit it was dry and stayed dry through the rest of the year. That is exactly what a re-torque visit exists to catch. Skipping it would have meant a heavier leak later and a lost service day. An autolift garage that includes the ninety-day visit in the install price pays back that visit many times over.

Month Six: Learning the Workflow

By six months the shop had settled into the rhythm of a heavy-duty autolift garage. Tech routines around the mobile column workflow had matured. The shop discovered that positioning the columns for an RV drive-in required roughly ninety seconds of coordinated setup, which they could shave to about sixty with practice. Exhaust and driveline work that used to require a floor jack and stands now took a quarter of the time on the lift. Ticket velocity on chassis work roughly doubled.

Consumables in the first six months were minimal. Hydraulic fluid stayed clean. Battery charge cycles on the mobile columns settled into a predictable pattern that dictated overnight charging on weeknights and full topping on Fridays. The shop invested in a set of chock accessories and a couple of long-reach extension pads to handle wider RV frame configurations. Total consumable spend in the first six months was under a thousand dollars across all lifts, which is exactly the expected range for a well-installed heavy-duty configuration.

Month Eleven: The First Real Service Call

At month eleven the first real service call came in. One mobile column started intermittently failing to communicate with its neighbors during synchronized lift commands. The other three columns held steady, and the offending column would occasionally rejoin the group. Symptom pattern pointed at either a communication radio issue or a battery capacity degradation on that one column. We dispatched a service tech within twenty-four hours.

The diagnosis was a communication radio module that had developed intermittent contact on one internal connector, a manufacturing defect that showed up outside of the honeymoon period. Warranty coverage applied. Replacement module was in our stock, swapped in a couple of hours, and the shop was back to a full four-column lift by end of the day. Total downtime: less than a working day. Total out-of-pocket cost to the shop: zero, covered under the manufacturer warranty. That is the workflow you want a heavy-duty autolift garage to deliver, and it is the workflow that only exists when you buy through a dealer with a real service arm.

Month Twelve: Planning Year Two

At the year mark we sat down with the shop for the annual maintenance visit and year-two planning conversation. Fluid change, cable and hose inspection, sync system verification, and structural weld inspection all passed. The shop had accumulated data on which bays saw the highest turn and where they wanted to expand. Year two planning included adding a mid-rise scissor for smaller chassis work and considering whether three-phase power was worth revisiting now that the operation had ramped.
