A car collector in northern Missouri called us in early spring to plan an autolift garage build for a small stable of stored vehicles: two vintage muscle cars, one European sports car from the mid-2000s, and a family SUV that gets used every day. The plan was seasonal storage on the lift for the muscle cars, occasional transmission service on all three collector vehicles, and daily-driver duty for the SUV. This is the first-year ownership story — every real decision from the initial phone call through the first transmission service twelve months later, including a symmetric-versus-asymmetric arm choice that ended up mattering more than expected once the trucks and cars started rolling through.

Month One: Choosing Between Symmetric and Asymmetric for the Autolift Garage
The first real decision on the build was arm geometry. Symmetric two-post arms are all the same length front and rear, which centers the vehicle exactly between the columns. Asymmetric arms are shorter in the front and longer in the rear, which shifts the vehicle rearward toward the columns and gives the driver’s door more clearance to open. For a modern SUV or sedan with a balanced weight distribution and a wide door, asymmetric is usually the right pick. For a vintage muscle car with a front-heavy engine and a long hood, symmetric wins because the weight has to sit correctly on the pads.
The collector’s fleet was mixed, which meant the arm choice was going to be a compromise. We recommended a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric two-post with the caveat that the muscle cars would have to be positioned carefully to keep the pads under the correct pinch-weld points. The alternative was a four-post drive-on autolift garage that eliminated the pad-position question entirely by using runways. After a long conversation about how often each vehicle would come off the lift for service versus sit on it for storage, the collector picked the four-post. That decision drove everything that followed in year one.
Month Two: The First Vehicle Goes Up on the Autolift Garage
Install day was in late April. The pole building the collector had built two years earlier had a 12-foot ceiling and a 5-inch slab at 3,500 PSI, which was exactly what a Rotary SM14 14,000-pound four-post needed. Our install team anchored the columns, ran the cable system, connected the hydraulic power unit, and commissioned the safety locks over about seven hours. The 1969 Camaro went up first, mostly because the collector wanted to see what the storage position actually looked like with a real car on the lift instead of an empty deck.
The first vehicle up on any autolift garage is a moment. Locks click, the runway settles onto the mechanical stops, and suddenly you have covered garage floor space you did not have that morning. The collector parked the daily-driver SUV underneath the elevated Camaro, walked around to admire the setup, and asked the question every collector asks in that moment: how much would a second lift cost, because now I want to store two more cars on top of two more cars. That is a good sign about the install.
Month Three: First Real Transmission Service
The first transmission service came in June on the European sports car — a full fluid and filter change on an automatic transmission that had 45,000 miles on the original fluid. The car came off storage duty, drove up onto the four-post, and got jack-stand-supported off the runways with the bridge jack for wheels-free clearance to drop the pan. Total time on the lift was about 90 minutes: 20 minutes to drop the pan, 15 minutes to change the filter, 20 minutes to refill through the check port, and the rest to torque everything and clean the drips.
What the collector noticed on that first transmission service was how much easier the four-post autolift garage made the job compared to the jack-stands he had used for decades in a previous shop. The vehicle was stable, the height was correct for standing work under the drain, and the runway captured the drips. He also noticed that the bridge jack was the piece of equipment he had almost skipped in the initial quote — and that skipping it would have made the transmission job significantly harder. That was the first vindication of the four-post choice.
Month Six: The Arm Choice Vindicated
By month six, the collector had done three more service jobs on the lift — an oil change on the daily-driver SUV, a differential fluid change on one of the muscle cars, and a coolant flush on the European sports car. Every one of those jobs benefited from the runway-based four-post design. The collector’s wife also started using the elevated storage position underneath as covered parking for her sedan during a winter garage remodel. In that first six months, the autolift garage delivered service utility and storage utility in roughly equal measure.
The arm-geometry conversation from month one turned out to have been the right conversation to have, even though the collector ultimately chose a design that had no arms. Understanding why symmetric versus asymmetric mattered led directly to understanding why a four-post was the better answer for his specific vehicle mix. Month Nine: What Storage Duty Actually Does to a Lift
By month nine — mid-winter — the collector had one muscle car on the lift for full-season storage. The lift held the car about six feet off the slab for four months. Nothing dramatic happened. The mechanical safety locks engaged and held. The hydraulic system settled the car a fraction of an inch over the four months, which is normal seal drift and not a problem. The cables stayed at correct tension. The columns stayed plumb. The collector called us once during the storage period asking whether he needed to cycle the lift periodically, and the answer was no — the safety locks are mechanical, not hydraulic-dependent, and the load is off the hydraulic system entirely while the runway is on the locks.
Storage duty is where four-post lifts earn their keep for collectors. A two-post autolift garage would not be a good choice for four months of continuous static load because the arms are not designed for it. A four-post is designed exactly for that, which is why every collector we equip goes on a four-post regardless of what they thought they wanted when they first called. The pattern is that consistent.
Month Twelve: First Service Interval and the Cable Check
At month twelve, we came back for the first annual ALI-required inspection. The inspection took about 90 minutes and covered the cables, safety locks, hydraulic hoses, runway welds, column anchors, and control unit. All six checkpoints passed without adjustment. Cable tension was still within factory spec. No leaks anywhere on the hydraulic circuit. Column anchors read correct torque on the check pull. The collector’s autolift garage was in the same condition it had been in on install day, minus some paint scuff on the runways from tire contact.
That inspection is what turns a good lift into a lift that lasts 20 years. Year Two Planning: Would We Change the Autolift Garage Choice?
Twelve months in, the collector asked the honest question: would he make the same autolift garage choice knowing what he knows now? The answer was yes on the four-post, yes on the 14,000-pound capacity, and yes on the bridge jack. The one thing he would change if starting over is adding a second lift from the start rather than trying to expand later. The building has room for two, the electrical service supports two, and the second lift would have doubled his storage and service capacity for about 60 percent of the first-lift cost because the utility rough-ins are already in place.
Year-two plans include a Rotary SM14 as the second lift, positioned next to the first, sharing the same electrical panel and air line. The install is scheduled for next spring, timed to give the collector maximum use of the new lift during the summer service season.
