A first-time buyer in Urbandale called us on a Saturday morning about an autolift garage for his home shop. Step One: Match the Autolift Garage to Your Actual Work
The most common first-time mistake is buying a lift based on what looks impressive in a video rather than what fits the work you actually do. For CV axle and half-shaft replacement, you need wheels-free access to the front hubs — meaning the vehicle has to be up in the air with the wheels hanging free so the axle can be pulled without spring or steering-knuckle interference. That points at a two-post autolift garage every time, not a four-post drive-on. A four-post is a great storage and inspection lift, but CV work on it requires a bridge jack to raise the wheels off the runway, which adds a step to every job.

Step Two: Verify Your Electrical Service
Before you buy the lift, verify the electrical service in the garage. A 10,000-pound two-post needs a 220-volt single-phase circuit at 30 amps. That means a dedicated 30-amp breaker in the panel, 10 AWG copper wire in EMT conduit, and a disconnect within 6 feet of the column base. For a garage that only has a single 15-amp lighting circuit run to it, you will need a subpanel and a service upgrade before the lift can be installed. That work usually runs $1,200 to $2,500 depending on the panel location and the run length.
The Urbandale buyer had a 100-amp subpanel already in his detached garage from a previous project, and there was capacity for the 30-amp circuit without upgrading the service. The electrician quoted $650 to run the circuit and install the disconnect, which was well within budget. Single-Phase 220V: What Home Garages Really Have
Almost every residential garage in the Des Moines metro runs on single-phase 220 volt service from a residential main panel. That is fine for any 10,000-pound or 12,000-pound two-post lift we sell for home use. Three-phase power is not required for a home shop and would be expensive to install because residential utility feeds do not come with three-phase as an option. If a marketplace seller tries to sell you a three-phase lift for a home garage, walk away — they are selling you something you cannot connect without a costly converter that will fail eventually.
The lift motor on a residential-grade two-post is 2 or 3 horsepower on single-phase. Full-load amperage is about 15 to 20 amps at 220 volts, which is well inside a 30-amp circuit. Motor life on single-phase 220 is measured in decades if the lift is used for a couple of jobs per week. Every autolift garage we install into a home shop uses the single-phase configuration by default because it is the right match for the environment. Nothing about a heavier configuration is worth the electrical cost for a home user.
Step Three: CV Axle and Half-Shaft Access
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is one of the most common home-shop jobs, which is why we spend time on it in every first-time consult. On a two-post lift, the vehicle is up with wheels hanging free, the tech removes the wheel, backs out the axle nut, disconnects the tie rod and lower ball joint, and slides the CV axle out through the hub. Total time on the lift is usually 60 to 90 minutes per side for a first-time DIYer, dropping to 30 to 45 minutes once you have done a few pairs.
What makes this job go smoothly on the right autolift garage setup is unrestricted rotation of the hub. The tech needs to spin the axle to get the CV shaft aligned with the differential splines during reinstallation. On a two-post with wheels hanging free, that spin is easy. On a four-post without a bridge jack, the wheel is loaded on the runway and you cannot spin the hub. That is why we recommend two-post for anyone whose primary use case involves CV or half-shaft work. It is not close.
Step Four: Buy From a Real Distributor, Not a Marketplace
Marketplace sellers can quote a lift for $2,000 less than we quote the same-class Rotary or Challenger. The reason is that the marketplace lift is an unbranded import with no third-party certification, no parts pipeline, and no warranty support. When something goes wrong — and something will go wrong on a 15-year piece of equipment — the marketplace seller is either out of business or unable to ship the part. The customer ends up buying the lift again to replace the one that failed.

Step Five: The Autolift Garage Install Day

The first six months on any home autolift garage should be quiet ones. The equipment is new, the anchors are properly torqued, and everything should function without adjustment. Things to watch for: any hydraulic drift greater than half an inch over 30 minutes indicates a seal issue; any grinding or catching in the safety-lock engagement indicates a lock-latch adjustment need; any unusual noise from the cable trays indicates a routing issue. All three are rare on new Rotary or Challenger lifts but worth understanding.
Basic maintenance during the first six months is simple. Wipe down the arms and pads after every use. Check the hydraulic reservoir level monthly. Cycle the lift under no load once a week if you are not using it regularly. That is it. Annual ALI inspection at month twelve is the only formal service item.
