Sizing an automotive lift for home garage restoration work means measuring twice before you spec anything. Restoration shops in a home-garage footprint are their own animal — the vehicles get lighter as they get stripped, sit on the lift longer than any daily driver, and demand access from angles most oil-change lifts don’t accommodate. This spring we did a site survey and install for a hobbyist restoration shop owner in West Des Moines who was moving his project from a rented commercial bay into his own detached garage. Here is the exact decision tree we walked with him, from budget through final configuration, and the checks we ran on his site before anything got quoted.

Budget First, Configuration Second

We always start with the budget conversation. Not to talk anyone out of a purchase, but because the configuration answers change dramatically at different price tiers. A home-shop restoration budget in the low-four-figure range points you at a scissor mid-rise or a used two-post — both viable but limited. A mid-four-figure budget opens up a new two-post or a nine-thousand-pound four-post. Above that, ten- and twelve-thousand-pound four-posts and specialty scissors come into play. For our West Des Moines customer, the budget landed him in the mid-range where a proper two-post was in reach.

The reason we push this question first is to avoid the awkward moment where we’ve spent an hour designing a shop the customer can’t afford. Budget doesn’t dictate the final choice, but it defines the corridor of options that make sense. For an automotive lift for home garage restoration duty, we’d rather see a customer buy a slightly smaller lift from a name brand than a slightly larger lift from a no-name importer. Restoration projects sit on lifts for weeks or months at a time. That is not the environment for a discount lift with a questionable slack-safety system.

Vehicle Profile: What Restoration Actually Requires

Restoration vehicles are lighter than daily drivers on average, but the work you do to them is more invasive. You’ll pull the body off the frame, blast rust, weld patch panels, and swap suspension. That means the lift needs to hold a rolling chassis with no drivetrain almost as often as it holds a complete car. It also means you’ll want the vehicle at multiple heights during a single project — low for body work off the roof, chest-high for door and quarter-panel work, overhead for underside welding. Every automotive lift for home garage we spec for restoration gets configured for that height flexibility from the start.

Our customer’s project was a mid-1960s two-door coupe, currently a rolling shell. Curb weight target when finished around 3,300 pounds. That number sounds trivial for a lift, but during body-off work he’d have the body on stands separately and the bare frame on the lift — and he wanted to be able to raise both simultaneously in the same bay. That drove us toward a two-post with symmetric arms and a set of frame-cradle pads rather than the usual pinch-weld pads. The right pad set is a fifty-dollar decision that saves your rocker panels ten times over during a restoration.

The Site Survey We Actually Ran

Before we quoted anything we drove out with a tape measure, a chalk line, and a rebar-detection probe. His garage was a detached 24×30 with 11-foot ceilings and an existing slab of unknown age. We measured the ceiling at four points because roof lines lie — the peak was 12’4″ but the eave side was 10’8″. We measured door widths, we chalked column positions on the floor, and we walked the arms in their full-swing arc to check clearance to the workbench and the shelving on the side wall. Ten minutes of that walk-through eliminated two lift models from the quote because their arms wouldn’t clear a support post.

The slab side of the survey involved a hammer test for hollow spots, a visual check for major cracks, and a couple of test drills to confirm depth and hardness. His concrete tested at roughly four inches with light mesh, in good structural condition, poured about fifteen years ago based on his memory. Good enough for a two-post with the right anchors. Every automotive lift for home garage install we do gets this same site walk before we finalize the quote. Guessing at ceiling and slab from a photo is how customers end up with the wrong lift sitting in a crate.

Column Style: Overhead vs. Floorplate

With an 11-foot ceiling and a two-post spec’d, we had to choose between overhead-style (crossbeam over the top of the columns) and floorplate-style (crossbeam runs along the floor between column bases). Overhead is cleaner — nothing to trip over — but requires the ceiling to have enough room for the crossbeam plus a lifted vehicle. Floorplate is uglier at ground level but wins back six to eight inches of headroom under a raised vehicle.

For a restoration shop we tend to recommend floorplate whenever ceiling height is even slightly tight. Restoration means spending long stretches of time working directly under the vehicle at max lift, and every inch of headroom under the car matters more than a tripping hazard at floor level. Our West Des Moines customer went floorplate. He said afterward it was the single best call we made on his install, because when the shell is up and he’s welding underneath, he isn’t ducking. Restorers agree with us on this call nine times out of ten.

Electrical and Air: Restoration-Specific Loads

Restoration means welding. Welding means power. His previous shop had a 220V circuit that also fed the compressor and the lights, which meant the welder tripped the breaker every third bead. We reviewed his panel with his electrician and made sure the new shop got a dedicated 220V circuit for the welder, a separate dedicated circuit for the compressor, and a third for the lift itself. The lift only draws a modest amount of current but sharing its circuit with a MIG welder is a recipe for breaker chases you don’t need.

Air is the other quiet cost. A serious restoration shop wants a two-stage compressor, at least twenty gallons of tank, and 3/4-inch or one-inch air lines run to at least two drops. Plumbing that during the shop build is trivially cheap; adding it later means running hose across the floor forever. We don’t sell compressors, but we spec them into every restoration-focused quote because the automotive lift for home garage build is only as capable as the utilities feeding it. Getting these right at build time is what turns a garage into a shop.

Configuration Final: What We Ended Up Quoting

The final config: a nine-thousand-pound asymmetric two-post, floorplate style, symmetric-swing arms with frame-cradle pad set, delivered and installed from our Ames warehouse to his West Des Moines address. We added a pair of aftermarket LED work lights that clip to the column tops and a jack tray that hangs off one of the arms. Total install day: about seven hours from crate open to signed handoff. He was welding on the shell the following weekend.

The decision tree from budget to final config took about a week of back-and-forth email plus one site visit. That’s typical. We’re not trying to close a lift sale on a first call; we’re trying to make sure the second call from that customer is a compliment, not a complaint. An automotive lift for home garage restoration setup is a long-term investment and we treat every quote that way. The lifts we sell tend to outlive the projects they were bought for, and we’re proud of that pattern.

The Lesson from the Survey

The single most valuable output of the site survey wasn’t the measurements themselves — it was the physical presence of two people, on his floor, walking his arm swings and looking at his ceiling from every angle. Numbers on a phone call and photos in an email cannot replace that. Roughly half the customers who send us specs remotely turn out to have measured something incorrectly, and we catch it in the survey. The other half get validated and get an even more confident quote.
