Myth 1: EV Weight Destroys Cylinder Seals
The forum claim is that EVs’ higher curb weight causes premature hydraulic cylinder seal failure. That’s a misunderstanding of how cylinder seals actually wear. A rod seal fails from cycles times pressure times contamination — not from a heavier static load. A 9,000-lb rated two-post cylinder is engineered to handle its rated load for tens of thousands of cycles. Lifting a 5,500-lb Model S doesn’t stress it any harder than lifting a 5,500-lb F-150.
What does kill seals faster: dirty hydraulic fluid, missed fluid changes, and cycling well over rated capacity. If your automotive lift for home garage is rated 9,000 lbs and you’re regularly lifting 4,500 to 5,500-lb EVs, you’re at 50 to 60% of rated capacity — a comfortable working load. Change the AW32 hydraulic oil every three years, keep the reservoir clean, and your seals will outlast the rest of the lift. Myth 2: EVs Need Special Lifts
They don’t. What EVs need is correct lift-point selection and pad choice. Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, Ford Mach-E, and the rest all publish factory lift points — and those points are generally either reinforced pinch welds or specific pucks designed to spread load into the battery tray without deforming it. Any properly-arm-equipped two-post or four-post will lift an EV safely if you use the right pad adapters.
What’s true is that the pad adapters matter more on EVs than they did on ICE vehicles. A slipped pad on an EV can crush a battery module, and that’s a much larger repair than a dented rocker on an ICE car. So the practical guidance for an automotive lift for home garage duty in an EV shop: buy a mid-tier two-post or four-post with proper stackable pad adapters, and stock the specific Tesla/Rivian/Ford EV pucks matching the vehicles you service. Where the Battery Actually Complicates Things
Battery-pack pull-downs are the one place where lift choice genuinely matters. Pulling a battery out of the bottom of a Model S or a Mustang Mach-E means you need clear underbody access, a battery table or supported cart underneath, and usually 40+ inches of underbody clearance. A standard two-post gives you plenty of clearance because the vehicle is off the wheels and up in the air. A four-post is less friendly to battery pulls because the runways are in the way underneath.
If battery removal is going to be a regular job in your automotive lift for home garage bay, we’d steer you toward a 10K or 12K two-post rather than a four-post. If battery work is rare and storage is the primary secondary use, a four-post still makes sense and you can rent or borrow a battery table for the occasional pull-down. EVs eat tires faster (instant torque plus curb weight) and their wheel bearings see higher continuous loads because the vehicles are heavier. So the everyday work is a wheel-off job, and a two-post is still the right tool.
The cylinder seal question circles back here too. Wheel bearing service is a mid-cycle-count job — several cycles per bearing to raise, position, adjust, lower, torque, and re-lift. If you’re pulling 10 bearings a week, you’re putting 40 to 60 cycles on your lift weekly. Over five years that’s roughly 12,000 cycles. Iowa Great Lakes: Ceiling, Slab, and the Cold Question
The Great Lakes region shops we’ve quoted mostly work out of 30-by-40 or larger pole buildings with 12 to 14 foot sidewalls. Ceiling isn’t the constraint for an automotive lift for home garage in that world — the slab and the cold are. Slab is often 4-inch minimum, sometimes 5-inch with rebar, which is more than enough for a 10K or 12K two-post. Cold matters because hydraulic oil viscosity climbs in an unheated shop, and a first cycle in the morning on cold oil can spike system pressure.
Practical fix: if your bay isn’t heated, cycle the lift empty two or three times to warm the oil before loading. Or heat the bay. If you’re pulling batteries in winter, you want heat anyway because battery-service temperatures matter for the vehicle too.
