Automotive Lift for Home Garage: First-Year Storage Ownership Story

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

An automotive lift for home garage seasonal storage was what a Davenport RV and trailer service shop owner asked us for last spring — not for the shop itself, but for his personal pole barn where he keeps two collector cars and a summer motorcycle. He wanted to store the winter-driven pickup at ground level and the summer-driven Corvette overhead, then swap them in the fall. Twelve months later he is on his second full swap cycle and has a lot to say about what he wishes he had known. This is his first-year story, model by model, decision by decision, from a customer who now recommends us to every RV shop and dealer he crosses paths with in eastern Iowa. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames.

Why a storage buyer needs a different lift than a service buyer

Service buyers care about arm reach, lock granularity, and drive-through width. Storage buyers care about runway length, casters, and drip trays. Storage buyers do not care about a two-inch lock ladder — they will park a car up top and leave it for six months, which means they need one lock position, up. What they do care about is whether the runways are long enough for a modern crew-cab pickup, whether the lift can be moved around the garage on casters when they need floor space, and whether it comes with a drip tray to keep engine oil off the car parked below.

Those requirements point squarely to a four-post drive-on lift with an 8,000 to 9,000 lb capacity. A two-post storage lift technically exists but almost nobody sells one because you would have to leave the vehicle hanging from four arm pads — dumb idea for six months. A four-post lift is the answer for an automotive lift for home garage storage duty. Our Davenport customer landed there on his own before he called us.

Model comparison: BendPak HD-9, Atlas 409, and BendPak HD-9XW

He came to us with three finalists. The BendPak HD-9 is the market default — 9,000 lb capacity, standard-length runways, factory caster kit optional, 15-year structural warranty. The Atlas 409 is the direct competitor at a lower price point, similar spec sheet, slightly shorter runways. The BendPak HD-9XW is the extra-wide variant that fits a full-size crew-cab pickup and larger SUVs with wider track widths.

We compared them column by column. The Atlas 409 is a real lift and we sell it, but the runway length is right at the edge for a modern extended-cab pickup. The HD-9 nails the standard-truck case. The HD-9XW is the answer if the customer’s pickup is a wider-than-standard crew-cab dually or a lifted three-quarter-ton. Our customer runs a stock late-model half-ton crew-cab, so the HD-9 standard-width was the right fit. He would have paid the eight-hundred-dollar upcharge for the XW if his truck were wider — that math almost always favors the wider runway when a dually is involved.

The building: 11-foot ceiling and a stacked storage plan

His pole barn has an 11-foot ceiling. The stacked storage plan puts the Corvette on top and the pickup underneath. That means the total stack height — top vehicle’s roof plus lift structure plus pickup underneath — has to clear 11 feet. Corvette height is roughly 4 feet. Lift runway height at fully-raised is about 6 feet 8 inches. Pickup height clearance underneath is about 6 feet at the low point of the runway. Total stack: 10 feet 8 inches to top of Corvette roof, with about 4 inches of ceiling gap. Tight but workable.

If the top vehicle had been an SUV instead of a Corvette we would have had a real problem — a Ford Explorer is closer to 5 feet 10 inches tall and would not have fit under the 11-foot ceiling on top of the lift. We tell every storage customer to measure the roof height of the vehicle they plan to park up top and add it to the lift’s fully-raised runway height before they buy. That calculation kills more storage-lift deals than any other single spec.

Delivery and install

Delivery from Ames to Davenport is about two and a half hours by box truck. Install on a four-post takes longer than a two-post because there are more components — four columns, two runways, two crossbars, four cables, four pulleys, and a hydraulic power unit. Total install time on his lift was about seven hours with two techs. Anchors on a four-post are optional in most cases because the lift is designed to be moveable on casters, but we spec anchor points on the four column bases if the customer wants the option to lock it down later.

The most common mistake we see on customer-installed four-posts is the cable pulley routing. Every four-post uses either three cables or four cables to synchronize the two runways. If a single cable is misrouted at the pulley, the runways will not stay level and the lift will not pass its safety-latch drop test. We catch these on the first cycle every time on a professional install. On a DIY install they are the single most common warranty call.

First swap: putting the Corvette up top

Six weeks after install he did his first seasonal swap. Corvette drove up the ramps in about ninety seconds, he raised the lift to the top lock, walked around to verify the safety latches engaged on all four columns, and released hydraulic pressure to settle the runways onto the mechanical locks. Total time to swap up: under five minutes.

Then he backed his pickup underneath and set the drip trays. This is where storage buyers often overlook a detail. A four-post drip tray catches engine oil, transmission oil, and coolant if any of them leak from the top vehicle. On a collector car that leaks nothing it is theater. On a daily-driver storage rotation where the top vehicle is a beater project car, the drip tray is the difference between a happy pickup underneath and a stained pickup underneath. He bought the factory drip tray kit and has been glad every swap.

Six-month check and one small issue

Six months in, one of the four safety latches on the left front column started to click twice on release instead of once. That is a latch-return-spring wear signal. On a healthy latch the spring snaps the safety hook back into position with one crisp motion. When the spring starts to fatigue you get a double-click as the hook bounces before settling. Not a safety problem yet — the hook still engages — but a signal that the spring is heading toward replacement within the next thousand cycles.

We shipped a full four-latch spring replacement kit under warranty and he installed them himself with our phone guidance in about thirty minutes. This is the kind of small maintenance moment that separates the reputable four-post manufacturers from the imported unknowns. Every mainstream brand carries these springs as stocking parts for a decade after the last new lift ships. Off-brand imports do not.

Year-one takeaways for a storage buyer

His year-one advice, in his words: measure twice, buy the wider runway if you have any doubt, buy the drip tray up front, and pay for professional install. He also told us he wished he had bought the electric-drop mode option — a factory upgrade that lets the runways lower under electric power rather than hydraulic gravity. It is a two-hundred-dollar upcharge and it removes one of the annoying quirks of a home-storage four-post, which is that lowering is slower than raising because gravity feeds oil back through a smaller return path.
