An off-road and overlanding builder up in northeast Iowa called us wanting an automotive lift for home garage duty specifically because he was tired of doing his own annual state safety inspections plus a growing side-business of vehicle inspections for the overlanding community — trucks and 4x4s that his customers hauled in on trailers to get looked over before big trips. The Customer and the Vehicles
His work is a mix of his own 4Runner and Tacoma builds, customer 4×4 inspections, and long overnight jobs where a vehicle sits on the lift for a full weekend of skid-plate or drawer-system fabrication. He runs a 40-by-60 pole shed with a 14-foot sidewall, poured a 5-inch slab with rebar because he knew he’d be lifting trucks, and had 220V run to the wall before he ever called us. His constraint: some of the customer trucks he inspects are 8-inch-lift Wranglers or Bronco builds on 37s. Those vehicles are 82 to 86 inches tall at the roof. The Lift We Spec’d

The extra capacity also means the cylinder is doing 40 to 50 percent of rated load on his actual daily vehicles, which is easy on the seals.
His slab was more than adequate. The 5-inch pour with rebar gave us confidence in the anchor pullout numbers. His ceiling was 14 feet, so we had headroom for anything he’d realistically inspect. His 220V single-phase was already run, so the power hookup took 20 minutes. The whole install ran about five hours for our crew. State Inspection Workflow
Once the lift was in, his state inspection workflow got a lot cleaner. Vehicle comes in on the trailer or drives up, he backs onto the arms, sets the pads on the frame lift points, and raises to about waist height for the wheel-and-tire portion of the inspection, then to eye level for the underbody. Total in-air time for a clean 4×4 is 20 to 25 minutes; a rusted-out overlander often takes 45 to 60 because he’s actually finding things.
The two-post configuration was the right call for inspection work because the wheels hang free and he can spin, wiggle, and pull to check bearings, ball joints, and tie rods without needing a rolling jack. If he’d gone four-post, every wheel-off check would have required raising the axle with a bridge jack. Small workflow difference, big time savings across a year of inspection work.
Two Years In: The Cylinder Seal Service
About 26 months after install, he called about a slow oil weep at the base of the cylinder rod on the driver-side column. This is a completely normal wear pattern for a lift used four or five times a week for two years. The primary rod seal on a hydraulic cylinder eventually passes a few drops per cycle, and once you see oil on the base of the cylinder, it’s time to rebuild.
We had the rebuild kit in stock — rod seal, wiper, backup ring, O-rings. Total kit cost was under $150. Rebuild took him about an hour on a Saturday morning: pull the cylinder from the column, disassemble on the bench, replace the seals from the kit, reassemble, reinstall, bleed. The Ceiling-Height Question for Lifted Trucks
The overlanding-community side of his business threw up a specific challenge: some customer trucks are tall enough that even his 14-foot ceiling gets tight. An 84-inch overall height plus the two-post arm height plus the wheel-off travel means the roof at full lift is 13 feet 6 inches. Clearance to ceiling is only 6 inches. That’s technically fine but leaves no margin for error.
The rule for lifted-truck inspection work in an automotive lift for home garage bay: measure the ACTUAL overall height of your tallest expected vehicle, add lift travel, add a foot of safety clearance, and that’s your minimum ceiling requirement. If you don’t have that ceiling, you either lower the max lift height in the two-post’s programmed limit, or you accept that some vehicles don’t go fully in the air. Both are workable.
Parts Stocking as a Long-Term Consideration
The reason he keeps calling us for parts is that we stock them. What We’d Change and What Northeast Iowa Buyers Should Know
Not much we’d change on this install. If we did it again, we’d probably pre-position a rolling floor jack from day one, and we’d install a second lighting fixture directly over the lift because the pole shed’s ceiling lighting was slightly off-center for underbody work.
