Suspension work is not a rotisserie hobby. When you pull coil-overs, control arms, sway bars, or shock towers, you need the wheels hanging free, the pinch welds unloaded, and the vehicle sitting at working height for hours at a time. That single requirement rules out about half of what gets sold as a home garage lift. A drive-on 4-post keeps the wheels loaded, which is fine for oil changes and storage but useless for pulling struts. We drilled a small core and measured 4 inches of concrete over compacted base, no rebar, poured in 1978. Four inches is the manufacturer minimum for the lifts we sell for home garage suspension. 4-Post vs 2-Post for Family Shop Suspension Work
People ask us this every week and the honest answer is that a 4-post is not a suspension lift. It stores cars. It lets you change oil. It does not let you drop a control arm without deploying rolling jacks, and the rolling jack accessories add cost and complexity that a proper 2-post already includes for free. If the family in Urbandale had told us their real use was to park two Camaros over each other for the winter, we would have quoted a 4-post. Because they said suspension, we quoted a symmetric 2-post with three-stage front arms and two-stage rear arms.
The symmetric-vs-asymmetric decision is the other one that trips people up. Asymmetric 2-posts rotate the columns 30 degrees so the door swings wider once the car is up. Symmetric 2-posts sit square and give better balance on longer, heavier vehicles. The mechanical lock system on a proper 2-post is the safety story, not the hydraulic pressure. Hydraulics hold the car up while you are moving. Locks hold it up while you are working. If a vendor cannot describe their lock system in one sentence, that is your cue to ask why. Cheap import lifts sometimes have single-lock systems and wider spacing, and both are worse for real suspension work.
Slab Thickness, Rebar, and What 11 Feet of Ceiling Actually Buys You
Four inches of 3,000 psi concrete is the floor. Not the goal. Six inches with rebar or fiber is what we would pour today if we were starting from scratch, and for a shop that plans to add a mobile column set or a heavier 2-post someday, six inches keeps every future option open. The Urbandale slab passed but we anchored with longer wedge anchors than the manufacturer minimum and torqued them to the top of the spec range. That is a habit we picked up doing installs on 1970s pole-barn floors that had seen a lot of thaw cycles.
Ceiling height sets the rise limit of the lift, and rise limit sets what you can actually work on. An 11-foot ceiling gives you about 6 feet of clear underside on most 2-post lifts, which is enough for anyone under six feet tall to stand upright and swing a torque wrench. A 12-foot ceiling gets you the taller pickups and vans without ducking. A 13-foot ceiling gets you overhead-arm 2-posts, which delete the equalizer bar between the columns and let the widest passenger doors swing open unobstructed. Twenty-Year Cost of Ownership on a Home Garage Lift
The purchase price is the easy number. What most people miss is the second decade. On a lift that gets 200 uses a year for 20 years, you will replace hydraulic cylinder seals once or twice, cables and equalizer cables at least once, sheaves if you never grease them, and hoses on their normal schedule.
