Measure the Ceiling in Four Places

The choices narrowed to a low-ceiling two-post or a four-post — and either one would work with breathing room.

Suspension work leans toward two-post because you need wheels-off access with the arms holding the frame. On a four-post you’d need a rolling bridge jack raising the vehicle off the runways. Both are workable. For our customer we ended up recommending the low-ceiling two-post because it gave him the cleanest wheels-off working environment for shocks and struts — his primary use case — while still fitting under his real ceiling number with a couple of inches to spare. Door Swing: The Variable Nobody Thinks About

His overhead garage door was a standard sectional that swung up along tracks parallel to the ceiling. When the door was up, the panels sat about six inches below the ceiling for the last four feet of ceiling depth. That created a horizontal ledge across the front of his bay that any lifted vehicle would eventually hit if it was tall enough. Not the lift columns themselves — the vehicle on top of them.

The math for door swing goes like this: measure your vehicle’s height on the ground, subtract from your real ceiling number, and confirm the difference is greater than the lift’s max rise plus a couple of inches for the runway or arms. For our customer, his tallest weekend car was about 5’6″ tall. Real ceiling 9’11”. Max lift rise on the two-post about 4′. That gave him about six inches of daylight above the roof at full lift. Column Placement and Bay Width

His garage bay was 12 feet wide. Standard two-post column spacing runs about 11 feet outside-to-outside, which meant we had six inches of wall clearance on each side. Enough, but not roomy. We laid the column footprints out with tape on the floor before he wrote a check. He walked between the columns and the walls, opened his car doors at various positions on the arms, and satisfied himself that daily use wouldn’t be a squeeze. That physical walk-through is worth twenty minutes and saves regret.

Column spacing also drives where you can and can’t do work. On his two-post the columns landed such that an open driver door on a mid-size sedan cleared the column by about four inches at full swing. Any wider vehicle would have hit. Fortunately his weekend cars are all mid-size or smaller. If he’d wanted to lift a full-size pickup we’d have had to spec a wider column spacing or a different lift altogether. Anchoring in an Attached Garage

Attached garages typically have four-inch slabs with wire mesh. His was about eight years old, in good condition, no visible cracks near the intended anchor locations. We test-drilled one anchor hole to confirm the concrete was solid all the way through — sometimes attached garage slabs have hollow spots from settled subgrade. His tested solid. Six 3/4-inch wedge anchors, torqued to spec, and the columns were standing plumb by lunchtime.

The one thing we watch for in attached garages that we don’t worry about in pole barns is proximity to the house’s foundation wall. Lifting loads through a slab poured against a foundation can, in rare cases, transmit stresses in odd ways. His column locations were more than three feet from the shared foundation wall, so no concern. If your intended lift location is within a foot or two of a foundation, we’ll usually recommend a different spot or a different lift style. The Suspension Job That Justified Everything

His first job on the lift after commissioning was a full set of coilovers on his weekend track car.
