If you’re planning an automotive lift for home garage duty specifically for restoration work, the pre-purchase checklist is different from the checklist for a hobbyist who just wants to change his own oil. Restoration means the car sits on the lift for weeks at a time, not hours. That changes what you need to verify before you buy. Item 1: Measure the Slab Before You Order

Most Marion garages were built with a 4-inch nominal slab. Measure it. The easiest way is to drill a small pilot hole with a masonry bit and mark the depth against a reference. If your slab is 4 inches or better with rebar or fiber mesh, you’re clear for any residential-rated automotive lift for home garage duty. If it’s 3.5 inches or thinner, you have two paths: a four-post that doesn’t need anchors, or cut and pour footings under a two-post’s column locations.

The reason this matters more for restoration than for maintenance work is duration. A restoration project might sit on the lift for six months. A two-post anchored into marginal concrete under continuous load will slowly loosen the anchors. A four-post spreads load and doesn’t rely on anchors, so it’s the safer choice for long-duration holds. If you’re absolutely committed to a two-post for restoration, do the slab prep right the first time.

Item 2: Ceiling Height with the Door Open

Marion has a mix of tract-house garages (8 to 9 foot ceilings) and pole-shed shops (10 to 14 foot). Measure the ceiling with the sectional door in the fully open position. That number is your usable overhead. If your garage door has horizontal tracks that intrude 18 inches, subtract those 18 inches from your “10-foot” quoted ceiling and you’re actually working with 8 feet 6 inches.

Restoration work usually needs less overhead than commercial service because you’re not lifting the car to the ceiling — you’re lifting it to a comfortable working height for underbody welding and metal fabrication. Roughly waist-to-chest height is where most restoration hobbyists park the car. A low-ceiling four-post or a mid-rise scissor lift can work in a lower garage where a two-post can’t. Item 3: Bay Layout and Weld Access

Restoration and metal work require access along the entire underbody — floors, rockers, frame rails. On a two-post, you have essentially unlimited access because nothing is in the way between and around the wheels. On a four-post, the runways run under the car and block direct access to the floors from below. If you’re planning to cut and weld new floor pans, a two-post gives you honest working room a four-post can’t.

Weld access is the reason we push a lot of Marion restoration hobbyists toward a two-post even when a four-post would be cheaper. The automotive lift for home garage decision here is really a working-access decision, not a lifting-capacity decision. Both configurations are 9,000-lb rated in most home-garage sizes — that’s not the differentiator. Access is.

Item 4: Anchor Pattern and Pre-Install Layout

Before install day, we ask Marion buyers to chalk out the anchor pattern on their slab and verify nothing conflicts. Two-post columns need typically 108 to 132 inches apart depending on drive-thru width. The anchor pattern is a rectangle 24 by 12 inches at each column base. Check that your chalk pattern clears any control joints, existing hardware bolts, or crack repairs. Anchor-holes in a control joint won’t hold.

Also verify the drive-in path. Some Marion garages have a support column or a workbench right where the driver’s side column wants to sit. Item 5: Power and Air Supply

An automotive lift for home garage needs power. Most residential two-posts are 110V or optionally 220V. 220V lifts faster and puts less strain on the motor. If you have or can add a 220V outlet in your Marion garage, do it. Restoration work often means you’re also running a MIG welder off 220, so a dedicated 30-amp circuit for the lift is worth adding.

Air comes up because most restoration hobbyists also want a rolling pneumatic jack under the lift for wheel-off work. That means running a shop-air line or setting up a portable compressor near the lift. Plan the air line during install rather than snaking it later. This is also a good time to run any overhead lighting you want positioned specifically over the raised lift, because access after install is a lot harder.

Item 6: Delivery Path and Assembly Space

Home-garage lifts arrive on freight pallets. A two-post ships as two column boxes plus an arm-set box plus a power-unit crate, roughly 900 to 1,200 pounds total in a couple of pieces. A four-post ships as long runway pieces that need honest floor space to unpack and assemble — often 20 feet of clear length.

Verify your Marion garage has the room to receive freight before delivery day. If the truck can’t get to the door, we can deliver to a curbside and you’re on the hook for getting it inside.
