A Cedar Rapids overlanding builder called us in early spring about an automotive lift for home garage installation that had to handle a lifted 4Runner, a full-size long-bed diesel with an overland camper on the back, and eventually a Wrangler build in progress. His constraint was ceiling height. The garage was framed with 11-foot walls and he wasn’t willing to reframe. His goal was maximum ground clearance for suspension and skid-plate work. The install we ended up doing for him is a good case study in how bay layout drives lift selection when the vehicles are unusually tall. Here is how the walkthrough, install, and first year played out for that specific Cedar Rapids build from measurement day forward.

The Customer Profile and Vehicle Fleet
Our customer runs a small off-road build and outfitting operation on the side. Day job is engineering, side work is overland-build fabrication for other Iowa off-roaders. His personal fleet at the time was a 4Runner on 34-inch tires with a two-and-a-half-inch lift, a Ram 2500 diesel with a slide-in truck camper (roughly 8 feet 4 inches to the top of the camper), and a Wrangler JL build that was still on jack stands in the corner. He wanted an automotive lift for home garage that could handle the 4Runner and the Wrangler comfortably, and could squeeze the Ram in for oil changes if he removed the camper first.
Total weight worst-case was under 8,000 pounds because the Ram with camper off was around 7,600 dry. So capacity was not the constraint. Height was. His ceiling was 11 feet at the truss chord, and his overhead door header was at 10 feet 2 inches. Every dimension we quoted had to fit inside those limits. The Ceiling Constraint and What It Ruled Out
An 11-foot ceiling immediately ruled out most overhead two-post lifts. Rotary’s SPO10 overhead has an 11-foot-4-inch total column height, three inches too tall to fit under the truss chord even before you consider the crossbeam clearance for the 4Runner. Challenger CL10 overhead was in the same neighborhood. We could have looked at a low-rise scissor for oil changes only, but that would have limited him to underbody work and killed the wheel access he needed for tire and brake service on customer builds.
What worked was a baseplate two-post. Rotary’s SPOA10 baseplate stands about 9 feet 10 inches tall at column top, well inside his ceiling constraint, with rise to about 68 inches at the pad. That gave him enough clearance to walk under a lifted 4Runner comfortably. The Door Swing Question
The other constraint was door swing. His overhead door was a standard sectional at 10 feet 2 inches header height. With the 4Runner sitting on the lift at working height, the roof-mounted awning would clear the fully-open door track only if the lift was positioned at least 42 inches back from the door opening. We laid that measurement out with masking tape on the slab and confirmed the 4Runner would still fit in the closed garage with the door down. The answer was yes, barely.
The Ram with the truck camper on top was a different story. Even at ride height, the camper cleared the door track by only two inches. He would have to remove the camper before pulling the Ram in for service. That was a compromise he accepted, but only because we walked through the exact door track geometry before install. It takes ten minutes and prevents a lot of regret later.
The Layout: Where the Columns Landed
Once we knew the baseplate SPOA10 was the answer, we had to pick the exact column footprint. The bay was 24 feet wide and 30 feet deep. We landed the columns 42 inches back from the door, centered side-to-side, with 3 feet 6 inches of walkaround on either side. That put the front of a full-size pickup 4 feet from the door when centered on the lift, and left 18 feet behind the lift for the Wrangler build area, workbench, and tool storage.
The floor-level cross tube on the baseplate landed roughly at the passenger door line of the 4Runner. He can open the front doors fully, and the rear doors clear the tube with a couple inches to spare. On the Ram he loses about six inches of rear-door swing, which is tolerable for oil changes but would be annoying for interior work. Install Day and Concrete Verification
Install day started with a slab check. His concrete was a 4-inch pour with wire mesh, poured about 12 years ago as part of a pole-barn build. We hammer-drilled two exploratory holes to confirm we had solid aggregate all the way down and no voids under the wire mesh. Both came back clean. Anchor bolts went in without incident and torqued to spec on the first pass. The whole install ran about five and a half hours from unload to first cycle. The one detail we had to solve on the fly was the electrical run. His shop had a 240-volt subpanel on the wrong wall, and running conduit to the power-unit location would have required going around the overhead door track. We rerouted the power-unit position to the same wall as the subpanel, added six feet of hydraulic hose to the standard package, and everything worked. It cost us an extra hour but saved him from having to hire an electrician to run conduit. That kind of flexibility is why we install lifts ourselves rather than shipping them and walking away. First Year of Off-Road Maintenance
Over the following twelve months, he did about 60 lift cycles on customer builds plus his own vehicles. The one accessory he added in the first six months was a set of tall pad extensions to handle the 4Runner’s high frame pinch points more comfortably.
