A customer near the Iowa-Missouri border called us about an automotive lift for home garage that could handle serious CV axle and half-shaft work on a lifted 4Runner, a Tacoma with a solid-axle swap in progress, and a Wrangler that was about to get long-travel arms. He is an overland builder in the online-content sense — the kind of home mechanic who runs regular projects that need axles hanging free, transfer cases coming out, and enough working space around the vehicle to swing long tools without bumping walls. He wanted a case study of how we would lay out his bay, not just which lift to buy, so we spent an afternoon with a laser and a chalk line before writing the quote.

Why the site visit came first

Overland builders often start the conversation with a specific model in mind because a friend or a YouTube channel recommended it. We appreciate that, but every home garage is different, and the layout of the bay ends up mattering more than the lift brand for how the work actually feels. Our Iowa-Missouri customer had a 36 by 40 pole shop with 12-foot side walls and a peak north of 14 feet at the ridge. The concrete was a fresh six-inch pour with a full mat of rebar, poured against a good compacted base. That is nearly perfect for an automotive lift for home garage build.

We laid out three vehicles in chalk on his slab: the 4Runner in place, the Tacoma at working position, and the Wrangler as it would be when parked for the winter. Almost immediately the doorswing on the pass side of the 4Runner conflicted with the location of his welder cart. That kind of thing does not show up on a graph paper sketch. It shows up when someone opens the door on a real truck and dents the sheet metal on a workbench corner. The site visit is the single highest-leverage thing we do on a design job.

Choosing a four-post with sliding jacks

Because he wanted to store one vehicle over another during winter and still be able to drop an axle in the summer, we quoted a 9,000 lb four-post with a pair of sliding rolling jacks. The four-post holds the truck by the tires, which lets you drive on and off with alignment intact and store a car underneath. That is the storage side. The sliding rolling jacks lift the axle off the runway so you can pull tires and drop half-shafts. That is the wrench side. Together, they cover almost every job an overland builder does at home, and they make an automotive lift for home garage feel like a proper shop bay instead of just a hoist.

We considered a two-post because CV axle work on a lifted rig loves wheels-free access. But two-posts do not store cars, and he specifically wanted to keep the Tacoma up top and slot the 4Runner underneath during snow months. The four-post plus rolling jacks was the honest compromise. He was going to lose a few minutes per axle job compared to a straight two-post, but he was going to gain the storage function he came in for. That kind of tradeoff is exactly what a site visit is supposed to surface.

Bay flow: where the tool cart lives

A working bay is not just the lift. It is the lift plus the toolbox, the parts cart, the fluid rack, the welder, and the workbench, and the way you move between all of them determines whether you actually like the space. We ran his four-post along the north wall centered nine feet from the entry door, with the powerside column facing the workbench so the disconnect and hydraulic reservoir were within a step of his usual work spot. The runways ran east-west, which put the truck nose toward the overhead door for easy pull-through.

The tool cart landed on the driver side of the lift at the front. That put it under his hand for engine and front-suspension work, which is 70 percent of what he does. A second smaller cart, the axle cart, sat on rolling casters against the back wall so we could roll it into position under each corner when he was pulling half-shafts. The fluid rack ended up on the pass side rear where the overhead lighting was best. Small design choices like these turn a good automotive lift for home garage into a shop you enjoy walking into. Our customer said the biggest surprise was how much more he used the bench once the flow was right.

Ceiling clearance and the moving envelope

His shop had 12-foot side walls and a truss peak 14 feet at center. That gave us a moving envelope more than tall enough for a 9,000 lb four-post, which needs about 11 feet 6 inches at the top of the runway plus the height of the truck sitting on it. We used 3D layout to check that the raised 4Runner did not touch the truss webs, and it did not — it cleared with about 24 inches to the nearest web. If your ceiling is closer to 10 feet, we would either move to a shorter four-post that raises to about 6 feet or discuss whether a mid-rise scissor is a better fit.

Overhead lighting has to be planned around this envelope too. LED shop strips hanging on chain get in the way of a raised truck, and we always recommend surface-mount strips on the ceiling itself or on the truss chord where they will never conflict. For his build we specified 8,000 lumen 4-foot strips mounted flush to the truss bottom chord, wired to a single switch inside the walk door. The result was a bay that stayed usable even in December with the door closed, which matters a lot when you are chasing dropped hardware in a winter axle job.

Anchors, drilling, and concrete health

Four-posts are typically only anchored at each column base, and some manufacturers even allow floating installs for portable use. We do not do floating installs. Every four-post we ship gets bolted down because it makes the lift feel and behave the way the engineer intended, and it protects the wall behind the truck from a runaway during a sudden impact. His slab was fresh six inches over compacted base, well above minimum, so anchor selection was easy: 3/4-inch epoxy anchors with a 5-inch embedment. We scanned for rebar before drilling and offset one anchor by half an inch to miss a bar. That is standard practice.

We also always dry-fit the columns before drilling. It sounds obvious, but a lot of installers eyeball a chalk line and start drilling because they are on a schedule. On a home build, especially for an owner who cares about how the shop looks, we set the runways in place, level them side to side, mark the anchors with a transfer punch, then drill. It costs an extra 30 minutes. It saves you a mis-set anchor that has to be filled and re-drilled. When you are buying an automotive lift for home garage that will live in your shop for two decades, those 30 minutes are the cheapest insurance you will ever get.

Overlanding-specific tools we added

Once the lift was in, we added three overland-specific accessories that changed how the bay worked. First, a pair of aluminum drive-on ramps for the ends of the runways, which shave inches off the initial ground clearance requirement for lifted trucks with front bumpers that hang forward. Second, an air hose reel on the back wall with a small manifold at the ceiling, because half of overland axle work involves running an impact for hardware that has never been touched. Third, a set of 4-inch caster wheels on the axle cart so it could handle the runway grate without hanging up.

He also asked about a swing-out extension arm for the sliding rolling jacks so he could pick up under the diff pan on the 4Runner front axle. We did not add one for the initial build because his stock jack pads reached both diffs with a small adapter. If he adds a solid-axle swap on the Tacoma with a wider case, we can upgrade to a longer jack adapter later. That is how we like to build these projects: solve the current problem well, and leave upgrade paths open. Getting the fundamentals right on your automotive lift for home garage matters more than buying every accessory on day one.

Total cost, timeline, and what he would change

Delivery to full commissioning took three weeks, most of which was waiting on the lift to move from our Iowa warehouse to his site — his slab and shop were already ready. Install day itself ran from about 9 am to 4 pm, including anchor cure time and a full cycle test with his own Tacoma. He signed off before dinner. The total delivered install landed in the mid range of a home garage build for a four-post with rolling jacks — not the cheapest option and not the most expensive.

Asked what he would change, he said he would have run the compressed-air line to the second bay before the concrete cured. He is planning a small addition next spring, and the new line will have to chase along the wall instead of coming up through the slab. Small stuff.
