Automotive Lift for Home Garage: Freight, Forklifts, and Restoration Dimensions

An automotive lift for home garage restoration and metal work has to survive freight, unloading, install, and 20 years of hammering, grinding, and welding underneath. Most buyers focus on the last part. We spend as much time on the first three, because a lift that gets banged around on delivery or dropped off the tailgate of a straight truck is a lift that ships back to the manufacturer. When a dealership service manager in northern Missouri set up a restoration bay in his own barn last year, the whole project hinged on freight logistics as much as it did on the lift itself. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, Iowa, and this is the deep-dive we walked him through, dimension by dimension.

What a Restoration Bay Actually Demands

Restoration is not oil-change work. You have panels off, floor pans getting cut and rewelded, subframes dropped, and the vehicle at working height for weeks. That means the lift is not a tool you use once a day, it is furniture. Your automotive lift for home garage has to lock securely at any height between the floor and full rise, take welding spatter without cooking a wiring harness, and let you roll a floor jack, a MIG cart, and a shop stool underneath at the same time. Not every home garage lift meets that bar.

The Missouri manager wanted to bring one restoration project through per year, minor to major, plus daily driver maintenance for his family. He needed a lift that would raise a 5,000-pound project car onto stable mechanical locks and hold it steady while an entire quarter panel came off. A 2-post frame-engage lift handles that. A 4-post can do it with rolling jacks if the wheels need to come off. For his mix, we recommended a 10,000-pound symmetric 2-post with three-stage arms, and we quoted rolling jacks as a future add rather than an install-day requirement.

Freight and Why the Trailer You Pick Matters

Every automotive lift for home garage that ships from a factory or warehouse travels on a pallet weighing about 1,800 to 2,400 pounds. That is a full pallet, columns on their side, arms strapped, hydraulic power unit boxed separately. It arrives on a common carrier LTL truck with a 26-foot straight-truck bed or a 53-foot dry van. The driver will not carry it into your shop. He will bring it to the tailgate, drop it on a liftgate if you ordered one, and leave. If your driveway does not accept a 53-foot van, you have to make that clear on the order.

The Missouri shop was 3 miles off a state highway on a gravel county road. We flagged it during quoting. Rather than risk a stuck LTL trailer in a spring thaw, we scheduled delivery to his brother-in-law’s tractor dealership 12 miles away, where a forklift and a paved yard were already available. He picked the pallet up with a farm tractor and forks. The lift arrived intact. The freight bill went down because we routed to a dock. This is the kind of decision your installer should be making with you before the truck is dispatched, not after.

Unloading and Where Forklift Access Fails

Forklift access is where a lot of home garage lift projects get sideways. A 5,000-pound-capacity forklift can lift the pallet from the top. A 3,000-pound-capacity residential-grade telehandler probably cannot, at least not safely. And even if the machine has the capacity, the pallet is wide enough that fork spread matters. Standard forks with a 42-inch spread will move the pallet. Bin forks at 24 inches will not. If you are borrowing a forklift from a friend, check the fork length before delivery day, not while the driver is waiting.

The safer play is the one the Missouri shop used: haul the pallet on a farm trailer to a location with a real forklift and stage it inside there, then move columns one by one on a pallet jack or an engine crane to the final bay. Once the columns are on their sides, each one weighs 500 to 800 pounds and two people can move it a short distance with a pallet jack over smooth concrete. Once vertical, the column is easy to walk into place. The choke point is the pallet, and forklift access is the choke point of the choke point.

Slab, Ceiling, and Real Restoration Dimensions

The Missouri barn had a 6-inch slab with rebar on 12-inch centers, poured in 2015 with a lift in mind. Ceiling was 13 feet 4 inches to the truss chord. That gave us every option we wanted, including an overhead-arm 2-post if he had asked for one. He did not. Baseplate 2-posts are easier to weld under because there is no beam over your head, and for restoration work that matters. Sparks fly up. A crossbeam collects grinding dust. A baseplate lift keeps the ceiling clean.

Slab thickness for an automotive lift for home garage restoration duty is a 4-inch minimum on 3,000 psi concrete. The math changes with rebar or fiber. Our anchor engineering assumes 4 inches of unreinforced 3,000 psi at the manufacturer minimum, and we prefer 6 inches with steel for restoration bays that will see repeated lifts of loaded frames. If your slab is thinner than 4 inches, we can walk you through cutting and re-pouring a pad under each column footprint. That is a project. Do it before the lift arrives, not after.

Install Choreography and Why We Do It Ourselves

Our installers set the columns, drill anchors, plumb hydraulics, wire the power unit to a 220V single-phase drop, fill the reservoir, bleed the cylinders, and test the safety locks under load before we leave. On a straightforward automotive lift for home garage 2-post install with a good slab, that is a five- to six-hour day for a two-person crew. On a restoration bay with additional accessories or an unusual ceiling, it can be a full day plus prep for a return visit. We price install to the job, not to the truck roll.

Home installers who try to do it themselves usually get 90 percent of the way there. The last 10 percent is where injuries and warranty voids happen. Cylinder bleed procedures are brand-specific. Cable tension has a target that requires an actual gauge. Anchor torque is a spec, not a feel. We have seen homeowners get all of this right, but the ones who did paid for a torque wrench and read the manual twice. If that is not you, hire the install. It is 4 to 8 hours of a two-person crew’s time and it is the single best insurance policy on a 20-year piece of equipment.

Welding, Spatter, and Wiring Harness Protection

Restoration bays produce sparks. A lot of them. The hydraulic power unit on an automotive lift for home garage restoration setup should not sit directly under your welding zone, and the routing of hydraulic hoses should avoid the swing arc of a welding cart. On the Missouri install, we asked the owner where he expected his welder to live and where the vehicle’s rocker panels would be during typical work. Then we rotated the power unit onto the column that was furthest from those two lines. That is a five-minute install-day decision that pays off for 20 years.

Cover the hydraulic hoses in high-heat sleeve if you plan to weld heavily under the lift. Welding blankets over the cylinders are cheap insurance. And keep a fire extinguisher within arm’s reach of the columns, not across the shop. None of this is manufacturer requirement. It is what a 20-year restoration owner would tell a new one. The lift itself is fine around welding. The consumables around it need the same attention you give the vehicle.

What We Would Do Differently Next Time

The Missouri project worked out. The one thing we would change looking back is that we would have quoted the LTL delivery to the tractor dealership from the start rather than to his farm address. He was flexible on the reroute, but a customer who was not flexible would have been stuck. On every automotive lift for home garage we sell now, we ask about the last mile before we book the freight. That is one of the small things that separates a good install experience from a stressful one.
