You need the pan low enough that it clears the crankshaft when you drop it, high enough that your arms are not folded up under the block, and stable enough that the car does not shift when you break a bolt loose that has been torqued for two seasons. On a low-slung race chassis, that translates to a lift with at least 72 inches of maximum rise, arms that fold clear of the sump area, and full anti-drop safety engagement at working height.

A two-post with rotating rear arms is the answer nine times out of ten. It picks up the car by the pinch welds or the frame rails, lifts it to whatever locking position you want — locks are typically spaced every two to two and a half inches — and holds it dead solid. The rear arms swing wide and clear the sump. The front arms stay compact under the front subframe. Decision Node One: Budget Bracket

The first decision node is which budget bracket the operation lives in. There are three brackets that actually matter. Decision Node Two: The Concrete Slab

Node two is the slab under the lift. Southwest Iowa shops fall into two broad categories. Newer pole barns and purpose-built race shops in Adair and Cass Counties were typically poured in the last fifteen years with a proper equipment-rated slab. That means at least four inches, often five or six, of 3,500 PSI concrete, with a full number-four rebar grid on 18-inch centers. That slab supports any lift on the market with zero reinforcement work.

Older attached-garage conversions in Atlantic, Red Oak, or Clarinda are a different story. Slabs in homes built between 1960 and 1990 can be three to three and a half inches, sometimes with wire mesh and sometimes with nothing structural at all. Those slabs do not support a two-post anchor without reinforcement. We either saw-cut and pour reinforcement pads under each column, which adds a day of concrete work and a few thousand dollars to the install, or we recommend a four-post that does not need anchoring. Either path is a legitimate answer. What is not legitimate is anchoring a two-post to a thin slab. The lift will hold at first and loosen over the years, which is exactly the failure mode you cannot have on an automotive lift for home garage race duty.

Decision Node Three: Rebar or No Rebar

Rebar comes up in every install conversation, and most owners misunderstand what it does. Rebar controls cracking. It does not directly increase anchor pull-out strength. Two identical slabs, one with rebar and one without, will hold an anchor bolt with essentially identical short-term strength. Where rebar matters is over the twenty-year life of the lift. Slabs without rebar develop hairline cracks around anchors within a few years, and those cracks grow and eventually let the anchors move.

That is the slab that will still be tight around the anchors when the lift is old enough to have a story. Fiber mesh is not a substitute. If your existing slab is thin or unreinforced and you want a two-post, either pour reinforcement pads or budget for eventual re-anchor work. Both are workable. Ignoring the problem is not.

Decision Node Four: Two-Post or Four-Post for Pan Work

Oil pan gasket work strongly favors a two-post. On a two-post, the tires are off the ground and the pan is fully accessible from the front, sides, and rear. You can walk 360 degrees around the sump, drop a pan, catch the old gasket, clean the mating surface, and reinstall without ever repositioning the vehicle. Total pan job on a race motor is typically two to three hours on a two-post lift, and every minute of that is on task.

On a four-post with rolling bridge jacks, oil pan work is possible but adds friction. You have to raise the axles with the bridge jacks to clear the pan drop path, which means the wheels are off the runways and the vehicle is only being held by the jacks. That works, but it is not the setup you want to leave for lunch. For a race team where the automotive lift for home garage is going to do pan work every couple of years and constant oil-and-filter service in between, the two-post wins on every dimension. Only pick a four-post if your shop cannot fit a two-post or your slab cannot support one.

Southwest Iowa Freight and Timeline
