An independent pro shop owner near the Iowa-Missouri border called about an automotive lift for home garage restoration work. His day job is a general repair shop in town. His side work is body-off restorations on classic pickups in the pole barn behind his house. He wanted a lift that could handle a rolling-chassis lift-and-hold for weeks at a time, tolerate a lot of grinder sparks nearby, and not eat cables from constant metal dust. Why restoration work stresses a lift differently
Restoration work is not like maintenance work. On a maintenance job the vehicle goes up, the technician does an hour or two of work, and the vehicle comes down. On a restoration job the vehicle can sit at working height for days or weeks while metal work, primer, and paint happen underneath. That static-load duration cycle is a completely different stress pattern on the hydraulics and the cables than what a maintenance shop puts on the same equipment.
The other restoration factor is airborne debris. Grinder sparks, metal dust from a die grinder, and paint overspray all land on the lift components. Cables collect dust, sheaves accumulate abrasive particles, and hydraulic hoses get sparks bounced off them. Option one: a two-post asymmetric

The frame is still there and the pads still find it, but the spotter needs to be more deliberate. For a solo shop owner doing his own spotting, that adds a small margin of frustration. We told him the two-post would work fine for his restorations but that spotting a bare chassis was going to be less forgiving than spotting a fully assembled vehicle.
Option two: a four-post with rolling jack
The second configuration was a BendPak HDS-14 four-post with a bridge jack. Fourteen-thousand-pound capacity, extra-long runways to fit a full-length pickup, and a rolling bridge jack that lifts the chassis off the runways when he needs wheels-off access. The four-post is a stable platform for a rolling chassis because the runways cradle the frame rails naturally. He can park a body-off pickup on the runways for weeks without the arm-shift concerns of a two-post.
The bridge jack lets him do the wheels-off work when the restoration calls for it, which is not constantly but is often enough to matter. The tradeoff is that the four-post takes up more floor space than the two-post and the runways can catch grinder sparks in a way that requires cleanup after every session. He asked whether the runway paint would burn off. We said yes, gradually, and that he would need to repaint the runway tops every few years to keep them clean. He was fine with that. Site survey: concrete, ceiling, and hose routing
We drove down to the Iowa-Missouri border for the site survey. His pole barn is 30 by 50 with 14-foot ceilings and a five-inch slab that he poured himself in 2018 with rebar and a 3,500 PSI mix. He had the original pour ticket, which made the concrete verification easy. The ceiling clearance was generous, enough for either configuration to lift a full-size crew cab at maximum height. Electrical was already run for single-phase 220 for his welder and his air compressor, both on separate breakers.

Concrete prep and anchor patterns
For the two-post option we would have needed to verify the anchor pattern hit clean concrete without cracks running underneath. When we scanned the slab with our concrete inspection tool we found one hairline crack running about four feet through the area where the two-post rear column would sit. That crack was probably cosmetic, not structural, but it added risk to the two-post anchor pattern.
That crack was the tipping factor for the pick.
