Configuration A: Open-Front 9,000 Pound 4-Post
The first configuration we compared was a 9,000 pound open-front 4-post automotive storage lift with a slotted deck and a rolling bridge jack. This is the everyday workhorse for a small-fleet shop. The 9,000 pound capacity covers a full-size van or a light duty pickup up top with plenty of margin, the slotted deck lets a bridge jack do wheel-off work when the lift is serving as a service platform, and the open-front design lets a tech walk straight through the runway.
For the Council Bluffs fleet, this configuration was the default recommendation. It handled the differential fluid service directly. A tech could drive a truck onto the deck, raise it to a comfortable working height, drop a drain pan under the diff cover, and complete the service in about half the time it took him on jack stands in the ground bay. When the service was not happening, the lift held a completed job so the ground bay stayed open for the next truck. Straightforward, cost-effective, and sized right for the fleet mix. Configuration B: 12,000 Pound Closed-Front 4-Post
The second configuration was a 12,000 pound closed-front 4-post automotive storage lift. The extra capacity gave the fleet operator headroom to store or service the medium duty trucks in his fleet, some of which pushed 10,000 pounds curb weight before payload. The closed-front cross-tie made walk-through less convenient but added rigidity across the runway, which matters more on the heavier trucks than it does on passenger cars.
The trade-off with Configuration B was cost, weight, and floor footprint. The heavier lift needed a bigger truck to deliver it, more anchor drilling on install, and a larger footprint on the floor. For fleets where the medium duty trucks are the majority, this configuration is the right buy. For fleets where the medium duty trucks are the minority and most of the daily work is on lighter chassis, Configuration A is the smarter money. Which one made sense for this particular Council Bluffs fleet depended on his actual truck mix, and that was the next conversation we had.
Side-by-Side: The Numbers That Actually Mattered
When we lined up Configuration A and Configuration B in a table, four numbers drove the decision. First, purchase price: Configuration B was meaningfully more expensive than Configuration A. Not double, but enough to notice. Second, freight cost: the heavier automotive storage lift needed a bigger trailer and a more careful unloading plan, which added to the delivered price. Third, install complexity: more anchors, longer install day, and a small labor premium for the heavier configuration.
The fourth number was the one that decided it: percentage of fleet vehicles over 9,000 pounds. For this operator, that number was around 20 percent. In other words, four out of every five trucks fit inside the Configuration A rating with margin, and only the largest one in five would have benefited from the heavier lift. We recommended Configuration A and told him to keep using the ground bay and jack stands for the occasional heavier truck, or to sub out those services if the volume grew. Buying a heavier automotive storage lift to handle a minority of the work is usually the wrong call.
Freight From Ames to Council Bluffs

Unloading and Forklift Logistics
