Install Day and the Cable Break-In
Our crew installed a pair of 15,000-pound Rotary SPO16-AV automotive two post lifts side by side in the Nebraska shop over a two-day window in June. Both lifts anchored into a five-inch slab poured 45 days earlier, both wired to a shared 60-amp single-phase feed, and both commissioned with a full function test and a torque check on every anchor. The first thing the crew showed the shop owner after commissioning was the cable routing at the top of each column. On automotive two post lifts the equalizer cables run over sheaves at the column tops and connect the two carriages so they rise together. Those cables are the single most safety-critical wear item on the lift.
New cables stretch during the first few weeks of use. That is not a defect, it is normal seating of the strands as they take load for the first time. The shop scheduled that follow-up for the third week of July and we adjusted both cables about a quarter turn on each equalizer nut. Months One Through Six: Learning the Bay
The shop crew spent the first six months learning where to set the arms for a 40-foot fifth wheel dually, a 30-foot toy hauler with a slide, and a range of pickup trucks pulling boats and enclosed trailers. RV and trailer service is a different animal from car service because the vehicles are longer, heavier, and often unloaded off-center due to slide-outs and generator placement. The techs kept a running log at each lift showing arm positions for every recurring customer, which cut the setup time on a repeat visit from ten minutes to two. That habit is worth adopting from day one on any commercial installation.
The lifts logged about 400 cycles each in the first six months, which is on the busy side of average for an RV shop and below the volume of a dealership service department. Cycle count matters for cable life because cables wear primarily at the sheave contact points, and more cycles means more sheave passes. The Nebraska shop noticed at about the four-month mark that the passenger-side cable on the north lift was making a slight ticking sound at the top of travel. We logged it, checked the sheave alignment, and confirmed it was a minor lubrication issue. A wipe with cable lube quieted it for the rest of the year.
The Six-Month Preventive Maintenance Visit
Every set of automotive two post lifts we install in a commercial shop gets a six-month preventive maintenance visit included in the purchase price. On the Nebraska shop that visit fell in December, which was helpful because the shop was slow between the fall storage rush and the spring pre-season rush. Our tech drove out, spent half a day, and covered the whole PM checklist. Cable tension, sheave bearing condition, safety latch engagement, hydraulic fluid level and cleanliness, power unit filter, arm restraint gear teeth, column plumb, and anchor bolt torque. Nothing was found that required more than routine adjustment.
The one thing that did require attention was the equalizer cable end fittings on both lifts. Cable end fittings are swaged onto the cable at the factory and never need attention, but the retaining nuts that hold the fittings against the carriage bracket had backed off about a sixteenth of a turn on three of the four cables. That is normal vibration loosening over hundreds of cycles. Our tech re-torqued all four to spec and marked each nut with a yellow paint pen so any future drift would be visible. That paint mark is the cheapest visual inspection aid we know of.
Tire Rotation and Wheel Work on RVs
Tire rotation on a Class C motorhome or a fifth-wheel tow rig is where automotive two post lifts earn their price in an RV shop. The vehicle is heavy, the wheels are large, and the customer wants a specific rotation pattern that respects load positions. On a two-post the wheels come off in the natural order, the tech has clean access to every stud, and the torque wrench never has to reach around a runway edge. The Nebraska shop pushed roughly 60 percent of its tire work through the two-post lifts in year one and reserved the four-post drive-on rack for alignment work only.
The wheel work volume also exposed a tooling gap the shop had not anticipated. The stock adapters on the lifts topped out at three inches of pad height, which was fine for a stock pickup but too short for the higher rocker heights on fifth-wheel toy haulers. We supplied a set of six-inch adapter extensions in the fall and the shop reported the wheel change time dropped by another two minutes per corner. Details like adapter height do not show up in the brochure but they show up in the labor invoice every single day. Order the tall adapters with the original lift purchase.
The Twelve-Month Cable Inspection
At the one-year mark we returned for the full annual cable inspection that shipped with the purchase. On automotive two post lifts, cable inspection means visually walking every foot of cable for broken strands, kinks, corrosion, and diameter reduction. Broken strands are counted per rope lay length. More than three broken wires in one strand or more than six broken wires distributed across the cable in one lay is grounds for replacement. Diameter loss of more than three percent from nominal is also grounds for replacement. Corrosion is grounds for replacement regardless of strand count.
Both Nebraska lifts passed the inspection with visible margin. The passenger-side cable on the north lift that had ticked at four months showed clean sheave contact and no wear beyond expected polish marks. The other three cables were essentially indistinguishable from new. Cables typically last five to seven years in a busy commercial shop and considerably longer in a shop that runs fewer cycles per day. The Nebraska shop is on track for a full cable replacement around year five, which we will pre-quote so the shop can budget for it well in advance rather than surprise the owner with a service call.
What Would Have Broken Without the Service Contract
The honest story is that automotive two post lifts installed correctly and serviced on schedule almost never fail catastrophically. What they do is drift out of adjustment slowly, and drift eventually turns into damage. If the Nebraska shop had skipped the 30-day re-tension, the cables would have gone slack, the carriages would have drifted out of sync, and one carriage would have loaded ahead of the other on every cycle. That accelerates cable wear, stresses the columns, and eventually leads to a sheave bearing failure. Not a catastrophic drop, but a lift that stops working correctly and takes hours to diagnose.
The service contract that shipped with the lifts covered the 30-day re-tension, the six-month PM, and the twelve-month cable inspection at no additional charge. That coverage has kept the pair of lifts running with zero downtime through year one. In year two we transition to annual PM only, priced at a flat rate that most owners find comparable to a set of tires on the shop truck. Skip that and the lifts will still work for a while, but the lifetime cost of ownership rises fast. Preventive service is not a profit center. It is the difference between a 25-year lift and a 12-year lift.
Year Two and Beyond
