A weekend hobbyist mechanic in east-central Iowa emailed us with a photo of his pole building and a two-line message: “Ready to buy. What do I need to know?” That question comes across our inbox every week from hobbyists who plan to spend a Saturday morning doing wheel bearing service on their pickup and want automotive two post lifts to make the job survivable at age 55. The honest answer is that the lift you can install cleanly depends entirely on the building you already own — and the pre-purchase site survey is a 30-minute exercise that saves weeks of grief. Here is the checklist we walk every east-central Iowa hobbyist through before we quote.

Measure the ceiling under every obstruction

The first checklist item is the ceiling height, and specifically the ceiling height under the lowest obstruction anywhere near the lift bay. Not the peak height at the trusses. Not the average across the room. The low point. Garage-door tracks. Sprinkler heads. Radiant tube heaters. Ceiling fans. HVAC ductwork. Automotive two post lifts need roughly 12 feet 4 inches clear under any obstruction for a standard overhead 10K, or 11 feet 4 inches for a standard baseplate 10K. Extended-height columns need another 6 to 8 inches.

Walk the entire lift bay area with a tape measure held on the concrete and read up. Write down the number at every point where something hangs from the ceiling. The lowest number is the number that decides your lift. If your low point is 11 feet, you are in baseplate territory. If your low point is 10 feet, you may need a lower-capacity mid-rise scissor lift or a different building. Do not guess this measurement. Get the tape out and confirm.

Check the concrete thickness and quality

Every 10K automotive two post lifts installation requires four inches minimum of 3,000 psi concrete under each column anchor pattern. Older pole buildings and detached garages in east-central Iowa often have thinner slabs than the owner remembers — three inches over gravel is common, and two inches over dirt is not rare. If you know the pour date and thickness, great. If you do not know, hammer-test the floor. Solid concrete rings; hollow concrete thuds. If in doubt, we can core-sample the floor for about $50 and know for sure.

Concrete quality matters as much as thickness. A cold joint through the middle of your lift bay is a fault line — anchors will pull out over time even if they torque to spec on install day. Look for visible seams in the pour. Look for cracks radiating from any existing anchor holes or expansion joints. If your concrete has soft spots, cracks, or joints running through the intended anchor pattern, plan to shift the lift position or reinforce the floor before install. This is a fix-once-forever decision.

Measure the bay width and vehicle door swing

Column-to-column spacing on a 10K asymmetric lift is roughly 105 inches inside dimension. Column outer dimension adds about 20 inches total to that number. Then you need walk-around clearance on each side — 24 inches minimum for a technician, 30 preferred. That means the minimum bay width for automotive two post lifts of the 10K asymmetric class is roughly 14 feet. If your building bay is 12 feet wide, you cannot fit a 10K without pulling the vehicle so tight against one column that you cannot open a door.

Vehicle door swing is the specific measurement that catches most hobbyists. Bring the widest-door vehicle you will lift into the intended lift position. Open the driver door fully. Measure the door swing arc. If the arc intersects the column position, you need asymmetric geometry (which rotates columns to clear the door) or a wider bay. Do this measurement with the actual vehicle, not an approximation. F-350 doors are wider than F-150 doors and much wider than Camry doors.

Confirm electrical service and circuit availability

A 10K single-phase 220V lift needs a dedicated 30-amp circuit within a reasonable cord reach of the powered column. Most pole buildings and detached garages in east-central Iowa have 220V service run for a welder or a compressor. Check whether that circuit is dedicated (only feeds one appliance) or shared. Automotive two post lifts need dedicated service — sharing a circuit with a welder trips breakers at random and stresses the lift motor.

If you do not have a dedicated 220V circuit, price it out with a local electrician before you commit to a lift purchase. A 30-amp pull from your panel to the intended column location typically runs a few hundred dollars in a straightforward pole building with an accessible panel. It rises quickly if the panel is small, old, or across the building. Confirm the electrical scope before ordering the lift. This is the item that most often delays install day.

Plan the anchor pattern around joints and drains

Every wedge anchor on a lift install has to sit at least six inches back from any expansion joint, cold joint, floor drain, or previous anchor hole. Concrete near a joint is weaker than concrete in the middle of a slab, and an anchor placed too close to a joint will spall out under load. Automotive two post lifts anchor with a specific pattern — usually four to six bolts per column base plate — and that pattern has to fit inside continuous concrete.

Sketch your intended anchor pattern on the floor with chalk before you order the lift. Compare it against every joint, drain, and existing hole in the vicinity. If the pattern intersects a joint, shift the lift position. If you cannot shift because of ceiling obstructions, consider adding an anchor extension plate or getting the floor overpoured in the affected area. These are all solvable problems if you catch them before install day.

Verify the vehicle mix and required capacity

Hobbyist mechanics often over-spec or under-spec capacity. Under-spec means buying a 9,000 lb lift for a truck that weighs 8,500 empty and 10,500 loaded — that lift is unsafe from day one. Over-spec means buying an 18,000 lb lift to service a Miata and a Camry when a 9,000 lb lift would do the job for less money and fit a shorter ceiling. Automotive two post lifts in the 9K to 12K range cover 95 percent of hobbyist use cases in east-central Iowa.

Make a list of every vehicle you plan to lift. Write the curb weight next to each. Add 15 percent for cargo, fuel, and unexpected occupants. The heaviest number on that list is the minimum lift capacity. If the heaviest vehicle on your list is a Camry, buy 9,000 lb. If the heaviest is an F-250, buy 12,000 lb. If the heaviest is a dually or a Class C motorhome chassis, you need a heavier lift or a four-post platform. Match capacity to actual use — not to “what if.”

Book the site survey before you buy

Every item on this checklist can be reviewed remotely with photos and a tape measure, or in person with us on a site-survey call. The remote version is fine for hobbyists comfortable with a measuring tape. The in-person survey costs nothing in Iowa within a couple hours of Ames and turns up the surprises you cannot see in a photograph — the mudsill that dips two inches on one side, the roof leak that has softened a corner of concrete, the ceiling fan that hangs 8 inches below the truss. Book the survey before you commit to a specific lift model.
