Different dealership, same conversation. A service manager at a southeast Iowa import store called us about automotive two post lifts for a bay renovation, and the driving job was — coincidentally — the same oil pan gasket work we had just spec’d for a Nebraska dealer earlier that quarter. But the site survey came back with two very different problems: an eleven-foot four-inch ceiling and a slab of unknown vintage. That combination is common in older dealerships, and it forces a different set of trade-offs than the modern-construction Nebraska store. We ended up with a low-rise baseplate configuration, a full slab repair, and an install sequence that had to work around the store’s summer service rush.

Working With Low Ceilings — Baseplate Configurations

An eleven-foot four-inch ceiling is a real constraint for automotive two post lifts. A standard overhead needs twelve feet minimum. Anything less and you either give up rise, or you go baseplate. Baseplate lifts route the equalizer cable and hydraulic hose through a shallow cover at the floor, freeing the overhead space entirely. You gain roughly a foot of usable rise, which is often the difference between a sedan you can walk under and a sedan you have to duck under.

For the southeast Iowa dealership we spec’d a low-rise baseplate at ten thousand pounds capacity. The overhead beam disappeared from the equation, and the tech could raise a Toyota Camry to full seventy-inch under-vehicle clearance without brushing the ceiling. The trade-off is that floor cover strip: it’s a real thing to walk over ten times a day. We routed it against the back wall so the primary walking path — front of the vehicle to rolling toolbox — didn’t cross the cover. Small layout decisions matter on a baseplate install, and they should be part of the site-survey drawing before the lift ships.

Legacy Slab Assessment — Coring, Testing, Repair

The dealership building had been standing since the mid-eighties. The original slab records were long gone. We couldn’t just quote automotive two post lifts against manufacturer minimums and hope the floor met them — we had to test. Two three-inch witness cores through the proposed anchor zone showed three-and-three-quarter-inch thickness with an estimated twenty-five-hundred PSI compressive strength. Both numbers were under the four-inch, thirty-five-hundred PSI minimum.

The fix was a partial slab replacement. We saw-cut a six-by-six-foot section around each column footprint, removed the old concrete down to sub-grade, re-compacted, and poured a full-depth six-inch pad at forty-five-hundred PSI. That repair added roughly two working days to the schedule and a modest cost, but it turned a marginal-anchor situation into a fully compliant one. Import-Brand Oil Pan Access — Different from Ford Trucks

Import-brand vehicles — the dealership’s core mix — have a different oil pan geometry than the Ecoboost F-150s we’d been spec’ing for Nebraska. Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Nissan all use transverse or lightly canted engine configurations with the pan sitting close to a front subframe crossmember. Arm reach requirements are shorter, but the tech needs unobstructed vertical clearance to swing a pan down without hitting the crossmember on the way out.

We spec’d two-stage front arms with a maximum reach of forty-two inches — plenty for the imports the dealership works on — and prioritized arm-swing radius over raw reach. That gave the tech thirty inches of clear vertical drop between the pan flange and the swing arc of the arm as it moved out of the way. Smaller reach, bigger swing radius, better import access. Automotive two post lifts spec’d for import service look different from lifts spec’d for full-size domestic trucks, and the site survey has to reflect the vehicle mix, not a generic template.

Bay Renovation Without Shutting Down Service

The southeast Iowa store couldn’t afford to shut down all four service bays for a lift replacement. Their summer service window drives about thirty percent of annual revenue, and every day dark is a real hit. We planned a phased install: bay one and bay two in mid-May before summer peaked, bay three during a scheduled two-week HVAC upgrade in mid-July, and bay four in mid-September after the summer rush.

Each phase involved one bay offline for four working days: two for slab repair, one for cure, one for lift install and commissioning. That kept three bays productive at all times and staggered the capital outlay across three billing cycles for the dealership’s finance team. Phased installs are almost always the right approach for revenue-generating shops. Automotive two post lifts don’t need to be replaced all at once, and the wrong sequencing can cost more in lost revenue than the equipment itself. Our project manager built the entire schedule around the dealership’s fixed OEM training weeks and the local school district’s football-season staffing patterns.

Symmetric Arms for Sedan-Heavy Fleets

For a dealership doing seventy percent sedans and thirty percent light SUVs, symmetric arms are the right pick. Asymmetric geometry sacrifices some centered-load capability in exchange for door-clearance, which is a great trade for a shop doing a lot of driver-in-vehicle work. Symmetric geometry maximizes centered support and gives you better balance on longer wheelbases like the Camry Hybrid or Accord Hybrid — vehicles with heavy front-mounted battery packs.

We spec’d symmetric arms with two-stage front and two-stage rear reach on the southeast Iowa lifts. Every vehicle in the dealership’s typical service mix fits comfortably within that arm range without swapping. The techs don’t have to think about arm selection between jobs, which reduces the time-per-vehicle by a few minutes on average and — more importantly — eliminates the human-error path where a tech pads a vehicle with the wrong arm pattern. Simpler is usually safer on shop-floor equipment, and symmetric arms are the simpler choice for import-heavy fleets.

Weekend Install Windows and Weather Contingencies

The dealership’s slab repair had to happen on a weekend to avoid disrupting the receiving door and customer parking. We scheduled saw-cut demo for Friday afternoon after the last customer left, sub-grade prep and pour for Saturday morning, and let the concrete cure over the balance of the weekend and the following work week. That gave us a full seven days of cure before we anchored — three days beyond the ideal minimum for anchor engagement.

Weather can throw a wrench in that timing. A pour under seventy-degree ambient with humidity above eighty percent slows cure noticeably. We build a weather contingency into every schedule and hold the anchor-set date until we’ve measured the actual cure state, not just counted calendar days. Southeast Iowa summers are warm and dry enough that we rarely see delays, but the automotive two post lifts installed at that dealership in July went in on a schedule that was flexible by design. Rigid schedules on concrete work are how anchors get set into under-cured slab and columns pull loose six months later.

Post-Install ALI Certification and Warranty Registration

After every install of automotive two post lifts, we register the equipment with the manufacturer for warranty and — for ALI Gold models — file the ALI installation record. That paperwork protects the dealership on any future warranty claim and puts the lift on the manufacturer’s certified-installer roster, which is a real deal on service response times if anything ever goes wrong.

Warranty terms are typically one year on hydraulic and cable components and two to five years on structural steel. Registration has to happen within thirty days of install for the warranty to activate. We handle that filing as part of our commissioning package, so the dealership doesn’t need to track paperwork after we leave. The written commissioning report — anchor torque, cable tension, safety-lock function, load-test results — lives with their insurance file and is what any inspector will want to see if they ever ask.
