Why Dealership Service Departments Choose a 10,000-lb Two-Post

A dealership service department along the Iowa-Nebraska border usually has 8 to 14 service bays and a technician mix that runs from apprentice-level oil-change specialists through master techs handling driveline and engine work. The 10,000-pound two-post is the workhorse of that mix because it handles every passenger vehicle, three-quarter-ton pickup, and midsize SUV a dealer sells new today, and it clears the underside cleanly for gasket work, drivetrain removal, and exhaust service. Anything smaller — 7,000 or 9,000 pounds — starts running into capacity margin problems with loaded three-quarter-ton trucks. Anything bigger, like 15,000 or 18,000-pound heavy-duty two-posts, has arms and pads that will not close short enough for a passenger car.

The other reason is standardization. When a dealership orders eight lifts at once for a bay expansion, the parts inventory, safety-inspection training, and hydraulic-fluid stock all get simpler if every lift is the same model. Ordering the same 10,000-pound two-post across the whole department means a single spare arm restraint fits every bay, a single power-unit spare covers the shop, and every tech knows exactly how the safety-lock ladder engages. That standardization is worth more than the small performance gain a mixed fleet of specialty lifts might deliver on paper.

The Real Reason Engine Oil Pan Gasket Work Needs a Two-Post

Engine oil pan gasket replacement is one of the jobs that separates a dealership two-post from a home-hobbyist four-post. On a modern V6 or V8 pickup, the oil pan sits below the front subframe, behind the front crossmember, and is fastened with 12 to 22 bolts that need a straight-line socket path. On a four-post with runways, the tech is reaching up through a runway gap, elbows locked, torque wrench sideways. On a two-post the tech has full underside access, the pan drops straight into a catch tray, and the torque sequence is done from a natural standing angle with a foot on a creeper seat.

The margin on that difference is time. A dealership tech billing at flat-rate hours on a warranty oil pan gasket job — a couple of them exist on late-model half-tons — turns the job in roughly 40 percent less time on a two-post than on a four-post with jack stands under the subframe. Over a year, that is dozens of billable hours per bay. When we quote automotive two post lifts to a dealership service manager, we usually walk through this specific job to make the ROI concrete. Automotive Two Post Lifts and the Electrical Circuit That Actually Runs Them

Here is where a lot of dealership installations go sideways: the electrical circuit that came pre-installed in the bay was sized for the previous lift, and nobody asked what the new one actually draws. Automotive two post lifts sold today are almost all powered by a 3 or 4-horsepower single-phase motor, or a 3, 4, or 5-horsepower three-phase motor. The circuit requirements are meaningfully different between them, and the difference has consequences for how the bay is wired, how the disconnect is spec’d, and how far the motor is from the sub-panel.

The single-phase 220V version — the most common at independent shops and small dealerships — draws about 18 to 24 amps at start-up and settles to 12 to 15 amps under load. It runs on a 30-amp two-pole breaker with 10-gauge copper. The three-phase version draws less amperage per leg but requires the shop to actually have three-phase service, and along the Iowa-Nebraska border that is a coin flip depending on the age of the building and whether it is served by utility three-phase or a rotary-phase converter. We ask the facility question before we quote the lift, because the wrong assumption there adds days to an installation timeline.

Single-Phase 220V vs Three-Phase 208V — What the Dealership Facility Manual Says

Most OEM dealership facility manuals — the reference book the automaker’s regional facility team hands the general manager when a new location is built — spec three-phase 208V or 480V service for the lift bays. That is aspirational. Actual buildings, especially remodeled or leased ones, run whatever the utility drop was ten or twenty years ago. When we do a site survey for a dealership along the Iowa-Nebraska border, the number-one thing we verify is what the sub-panel actually reads on a meter, not what the manual says the building should have. We have walked into brand-new-looking service departments where the entire lift row was on single-phase.

If the shop is on three-phase, we recommend the three-phase version of the same automotive two post lifts model. The motor runs cooler, the power unit reservoir stays cleaner over time, and the mean time between hydraulic seal replacements is measurably longer. If the shop is stuck on single-phase, the single-phase version is genuinely fine for a dealership duty cycle — Rotary and Challenger both build a rugged single-phase power unit — and we do not push the extra cost of a phase converter unless the dealership is planning to add compressors, tire changers, and alignment equipment that also want three-phase. We size the electrical package to the whole bay, not just the lift.

Real Amperage Draw, Breaker Sizing, and Wire Gauge

The specific numbers a dealership electrician needs to know when installing automotive two post lifts: 208-230V single-phase, 3 or 4 HP, 30-amp two-pole breaker, 10 AWG copper if the run is under 50 feet, 8 AWG if the run is 50 to 100 feet, and a NEMA 6-20 or hardwired disconnect within sight of the power unit. On three-phase 208V, 3 or 4 HP, 20-amp three-pole breaker, 12 AWG copper for under 75 feet, 10 AWG beyond that. If the dealership uses 480V three-phase — some legacy facilities do — the motor is a different sub-model and the wire gets smaller, but the breaker sizing follows the same NEC 430 tables.

The mistake we see most often is a shared circuit. Two lifts on one 30-amp breaker will trip every time both motors start under load in the same five-second window, and that scenario happens every morning when a dealership opens. Every lift needs its own circuit. The second mistake is running the disconnect switch on the wrong side of the column. A tech should be able to hit the disconnect while standing at the power unit; a disconnect across the bay behind a shelf is technically legal and practically useless. We spec these details on the quote so the electrician does not have to guess.

What We See Wrong in Dealership Electrical Prep

The three most common electrical problems we walk into on dealership installs are: an undersized breaker that will nuisance-trip within a month, a disconnect switch mounted where a raised vehicle blocks access, and a conduit run that arrives at the wrong side of the column and forces a service loop across the safety-lock ladder. Each of these is a fix that takes an electrician a half day and delays the lift going into service. On a dealership schedule with fixed customer appointments, that half-day matters.

The other issue we see is grounding. Older dealership service departments were built with a shared bay ground that ran to a single rod at the exterior wall. Modern automotive two post lifts have power-unit control boards that expect a clean equipment ground, and a shared ground can produce enough EMI to make the up/down button chatter or refuse to latch. We ask the electrician to pull a dedicated equipment grounding conductor to each lift, and we spec that on the drawing. It is a small line item that prevents a nuisance call three months after installation, and dealership techs appreciate not having to reset the power unit twice a week.
