A classic car restoration shop in Iowa City called us last fall with a problem most restoration guys eventually hit. Their 20-year-old two-post was starting to weep hydraulic fluid at the cylinder seal, the state safety inspection was three months out, and they could not decide whether to rebuild the old unit or replace it entirely. The owner walked me through his budget, his workflow, and the annual state inspection paperwork he lived with, and I ran him through the same decision tree we walk every restoration operation through when they are choosing between rebuild and replacement on automotive two post lifts. Here is that tree, adapted for any Iowa City area shop facing the same call.

Diagnose the Leak Before You Decide Anything

A weeping cylinder seal is not automatically a death sentence for a lift. On automotive two post lifts the cylinder is one of the few components you can genuinely rebuild in place, and Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak all sell OEM seal kits for their popular models. What you want to diagnose first is where the leak is coming from. If fluid is beading at the rod wiper at the top of the cylinder, the primary rod seal is done and a seal kit will fix it. If fluid is pooling at the base of the cylinder or at the hose fitting, you might have a fitting issue or a body porosity problem, and the fix path branches differently.

The tell for a genuinely tired cylinder is a barrel that has scored, pitted, or gouged internal walls. A seal will not survive against a scored bore, and the honest answer is either a replacement cylinder or a full lift replacement. Our restoration customers typically want to know before they spend the money, so we pull the cylinder, bore-scope it, and give a straight yes or no on the rebuild. If the bore is clean, we rebuild for a few hundred dollars in parts and labor. If it is scored, we quote a new cylinder or a new lift and let the customer choose.

The Rebuild Path: What It Actually Costs

Rebuild parts on the popular Rotary and Challenger cylinders are stocked in the United States and typically ship same day. A full seal kit for an SPO10 or CL10 cylinder runs in the range of a set of tires, not a set of engines. Labor to pull, rebuild, and reinstall runs about a shop day on site if we do it. That gives you a total in the mid three figures to low four figures, versus a new-lift replacement in the low five figures. If the rest of the lift is structurally sound, ALI Gold when it was new, and does not need cables or column bearings, rebuild is the honest recommendation.

The catch is that a 20-year-old lift often does not have only one worn component. If the cylinder is leaking, the cables are probably stretched, the safety latches are probably worn, and the power unit reservoir is probably contaminated. Rebuilding one component is fine. Rebuilding four components on a 20-year-old lift adds up to roughly the cost of a new one, and you still own a 20-year-old lift when you are done. For Iowa City restoration shops that plan to keep working for another two decades, replacement often ends up being the cheaper path over the total ownership window.

The Replacement Path: Choosing the Right Class

If the decision tree lands on replacement, the next branch is which class of automotive two post lifts fits a restoration shop. Restoration work sees lighter vehicles on average, since a classic muscle car or vintage pickup rarely tops 4,500 pounds curb weight. That means a 9,000 or 10,000 pound lift is usually plenty. The reason to step up to a 12,000 pound unit is not the vehicle weight, it is the arm reach and the pad clearance. Vintage cars have low ride heights, wide fender flares, and non-standard pickup points, and the taller adapter stacks on the 12,000-pound models are worth the price difference.

For restoration bays we usually recommend a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL12 asymmetric with three-stage front arms, the tall adapter kit, and a set of pinch-weld sliders for the vehicles that require them. The versymmetric arm option is nice if the shop also does customer daily-driver work between restoration projects. Skip the mid-rise. Restoration work wants full lift height so you can walk under a vehicle upright, and mid-rise puts the underbody at chest height, which is fine for tire work but terrible for exhaust and driveline access on a full restoration.

Iowa State Safety Inspection Requirements

Iowa does not have a state safety inspection program for private vehicles, but many restoration shops perform their own pre-delivery inspections and some counties require inspections for salvage title clearance. In either case, the lift itself is subject to ALI Gold certification and annual inspection under ANSI standards if the shop employs anyone besides the owner. Insurance carriers also increasingly ask for proof of annual lift inspection. That means the paperwork on your automotive two post lifts matters even if the vehicles you inspect do not have a state program.

We perform annual lift inspections for restoration shops throughout eastern Iowa and provide an ALI-conforming inspection sticker and paperwork copy for your files. If you buy a new lift from us, the first-year inspection is included in the purchase. If you own an older lift, we quote inspection separately and often combine it with a preventive maintenance service call to save you the trip charge. Restoration insurance carriers usually accept our inspection paperwork without additional documentation, which is one less thing to argue about at renewal time.

Concrete and Ceiling for a Restoration Shop

Iowa City restoration shops often live in older masonry buildings with concrete floors of unknown vintage and thickness. Before we install any new lift, we core-sample the slab to confirm at least four-and-a-quarter inches of 3,000 psi concrete. If the slab is thinner or lower strength, we quote either a slab reinforcement pour or a different mounting solution. A restoration shop with a 60-year-old floor is often surprised to learn the slab is only two-and-a-half inches thick. That is not a lift problem, it is a floor problem, and the fix is a fresh section of concrete in the lift bay.

Ceiling height in restoration shops tends to be generous because the buildings are older warehouses or converted machine shops. If your ceiling is over 13 feet clear, any standard-height two-post fits. If you have 12 feet or a truss dropping the effective clear to under 12 feet, we spec a baseplate-connected model or an extended-height overhead. Vintage vehicles are typically shorter than modern trucks, so the vehicle clearance is not usually the constraint. The equalizer bar height is what determines fit. We check this on site before we quote.

Bay Workflow for Restoration Access

A restoration bay uses the lift differently from a service bay. On a service bay the vehicle comes in and goes out the same day. On a restoration bay the vehicle sits on the lift for weeks while the technician works progressively through undercarriage restoration, exhaust fabrication, driveline installation, or brake and suspension rebuilds. That means the bay layout wants the workbench, welder, and parts washer all within one step of the lift, plus enough floor space around the columns to walk with a fender in your hands without banging into the arms.

We spec restoration bays with 14 feet of clear width around the lift, a rolling toolbox that lives at the driver side rear corner, and an overhead LED light bar mounted to the ceiling directly over the lifted vehicle. Some restoration shops add a rolling jack rail so they can drop a subframe or a rear axle without transferring the vehicle to jack stands. That accessory is a few hundred dollars added to the lift order and pays for itself the first time you pull a nine-inch rear end. Automotive two post lifts configured for restoration work look different in the details, and those details are worth thinking through before you order.

Making the Call: Rebuild or Replace

The Iowa City shop I opened with ended up choosing replacement, but only after we walked the decision tree honestly and found the cables were also at end of life and the safety latches had visible wear. The total rebuild cost would have landed at about 70 percent of a new-lift install, and the new lift came with a fresh 25-year structural warranty and a full ALI Gold certification. For a restoration operation that plans to run another 20 years, that math wins. For a hobby shop that expects to move within five years, the rebuild might have been the right call.
