His shop has four service bays laid out in a row along the north wall. Each bay is 14 feet wide, 30 feet deep, and 13 feet 6 inches to the joist. The columns for the outgoing lifts sat 11 feet 4 inches apart and 3 feet from the north wall. All four bays share a common shop air line and a common 220V single-phase drop, and the bays are separated by yellow-painted stripes on the floor rather than physical walls. Nine thousand pounds is also the sweet spot for import dealership work because the columns are a little narrower and the arms swing tight to the vehicle, which matters when the bay is only 14 feet wide.

Symmetric versus asymmetric was a real conversation because his mix is 80 percent passenger cars and 20 percent SUVs and vans. Asymmetric lifts favor sedan door clearance, and if his mix had been 95 percent cars, we would have gone asymmetric. At 80/20 the answer isn’t automatic. He decided symmetric because his taller-truck techs preferred the balanced column geometry when they were working on the SUVs. That program requires lift-based undercarriage inspection on every vehicle before it hits the used-car lot. Volume is high. Turnaround per vehicle is 20 to 30 minutes on the lift.

The certification story matters because his corporate underwriter requires all shop equipment to be ANSI/ALI ALCTV Gold certified with the third-party lab documentation kept on file. Every lift we quoted him was Gold certified from a mainline manufacturer, and the certification page came in the closeout binder we delivered on the day of install. He filed it with his corporate compliance office within a week. That’s how a dealership handles automotive two post lifts and inspection work. Certified equipment, documented paperwork, and a service contract with a real phone number. Column Height, Carriage Travel, and Maximum Lift Height

Column height for the model we specified was 12 feet 1 inch overall, including the cross tube. Carriage travel was 72 inches, meaning the lift pads travel 72 inches from full-down to full-up. Maximum working height under the vehicle (measured from the lift pads at full extension to the floor) was 74 inches, allowing a technician of average height to stand fully upright under any vehicle without stooping.

Full-down height on the lift pads was about 4 inches, low enough to slide under any passenger vehicle including low-clearance sports variants. His fleet included a handful of sport sedans with front air dams that used to require ramp-up on the outgoing lifts, and the new lifts eliminated that problem. Carriage speed was about 45 seconds from full-down to full-up on the pump size specified. That’s fast enough for a shop moving 30 to 40 vehicles per day through inspection. He preferred the rolling schedule because his customers were already booked into the week and rescheduling four days of appointments would have hurt his customer satisfaction index. Different dealerships prefer different sequencing. A shop that runs 90 percent utilization can’t take a whole bay down for four days without a plan. A shop that has slack in the schedule might prefer the compact install. We build the timeline around what the service manager needs, not around what’s easiest for us. Post-Install Service Contract and What It Covers
