A frame-off restoration project may sit on a lift for weeks at a time during the strip, media-blast, and refinish phases, then cycle constantly during reassembly. Meanwhile the shop takes in occasional wheel bearing service, brake work, and pre-purchase inspections on customer daily drivers to keep cash flowing during long-project down phases. That mixed rotation means the lift needs to be commercial-grade for the reassembly cycles and comfortable for long-duration static holds during finish work.

The consequence for the lift specification is that a mid-tier commercial 10,000-pound two-post is the right answer. Cheap import lifts are eliminated by the cycle count on the customer-daily-driver work. Ultra-heavy 15,000-pound truck lifts are unnecessary because a classic passenger vehicle rarely tops 5,000 pounds fully loaded. Modern vehicles have manufacturer-specified lift points that sit at odd geometry, and three-stage arms reach those points without contortions. Pad options are the last piece. A standard 4-inch pad works for most vehicles. A low-profile 3-inch pad adapter is useful for the occasional lowered enthusiast car and adds fifty to a hundred fifty depending on brand. Truck adapters extending the pad reach up to 8 inches are handy for the occasional pickup restoration and cost another hundred or so. Lane three: a local commercial bank line-of-credit if the shop already has that relationship, usually at 7 to 10 percent prime-plus-a-few-points.

For a shop with strong recent tax returns, the local bank lane usually wins on rate. For a shop with a shorter track record or a mixed cash-flow year, the third-party equipment finance lane is often the only realistic option. For a shop that can commit to taking delivery inside a promotional window, the manufacturer promo lane is unbeatable for the first year or two of the term. A flat monthly payment schedule is fine if the shop’s cash reserves smooth the slow months, but many small shops do not have that cushion.

The payment structure that often works best is a seasonal-adjusted schedule: lower payments in December, January, and February, higher payments in the summer months. Not every equipment finance company will write that structure, but some will, particularly for shops with a documented seasonality pattern. The other option is a deferred-first-payment schedule — often called a 90-day skip — where the first payment lands three months after delivery. That gives a spring-installed lift time to start generating revenue on customer work before the first payment is due.
