Trading the service van for a fixed shop
Going from mobile to fixed is a big shift for any independent mechanic. The mobile van has low overhead and the freedom to skip a bad customer, but it also means every job is a driveway job or a parking-lot job. Suspension work in a parking lot on a rainy November afternoon in the Quad Cities is character-building and slow. Automotive two post lifts do not tolerate significant voltage sags well — the power unit motor pulls harder to maintain flow, which shortens motor life and can trip the thermal cut-off on the starter. If a lift is tripping on start-up and the panel looks clean, check the neighbor’s compressor cycle first before you replace anything.
The rental condo the mechanic moved into did not have that problem, but two of his prospective customers in nearby buildings did, and we ended up rewriting their compressor schedules to alternate with the lift power unit during peak load hours. Phase converter or not — the honest answer

The mechanic asked us about a converter because a used lift he had almost bought was three-phase only. We advised him to buy a new single-phase lift instead of forcing the converter route. That advice paid off inside six months when he started adding parts to his shop — the panel had capacity for the compressor and a MIG welder without any conversion equipment in the electrical path. Every added piece of electrical hardware is a failure point, and skipping the converter kept his shop simple and reliable from day one.
First six months of suspension work on the new lift
Six months in, the Quad Cities mechanic had run roughly 380 vehicles across the new lift. Roughly two-thirds of that volume was suspension and shock work, the rest was brakes, driveline, and general under-vehicle service. Zero lift problems in that period. One cable adjustment at the eight-week mark, one hydraulic oil change at the three-month mark, and one arm-restraint gear inspection after a customer accidentally bumped an arm with a floor jack in the bay. Standard maintenance on any well-installed lift, no surprises at all.
