Fair question – most shop owners come across the two configurations without a clear side-by-side breakdown, and picking the wrong one for the vehicle mix costs real money and real productivity. This article walks the honest side-by-side comparison of overhead versus baseplate configurations, using CV axle and half-shaft work as the specific use case, so an Ankeny independent shop owner can decide with confidence which style of automotive two post lifts fits the building and the work.

What Overhead-Style Two-Post Lifts Actually Are

Overhead-style two-post lifts run the shutoff bar and the equalizer cable across the top of the columns, connected by an overhead crossbar that sits above the vehicle. When the lift raises to full height, the roof of the vehicle stops just below that crossbar – the crossbar acts as an automatic top-of-travel shutoff.

The advantage is a clean floor. Nothing between the columns at ground level except concrete. Roll-in and roll-out is unrestricted, drive-through is possible for pickup trucks with long beds, and there’s no cross-bar for a tech to trip over. For general repair work on cars and light trucks, this is the ergonomically better setup. The engineering trade-off is that the shutoff mechanism and equalizer cabling all live overhead, which means more moving parts up high where they’re harder to inspect. Cable equalization on overhead-style automotive two post lifts is still reliable – the design has been in production for 40 years – but a 15-foot ceiling ladder is required for annual cable inspection. What Baseplate-Style Two-Post Lifts Actually Are

Baseplate-style two-post lifts run the shutoff and equalizer at floor level – through a cross-bar or cable channel that spans between the column bases at the ground. There is no overhead cross-bar. The top of the vehicle can go to whatever ceiling height the building allows without hitting an overhead structural element from the lift itself.

The advantage is ceiling height flexibility. A baseplate lift fits in a building with 10 or 11 foot ceilings where an overhead-style lift will not. For a building that’s already erected – old dairy barns, converted quonset huts, retrofits into commercial garages that were built for something else – baseplate is often the only configuration that works. The trade-off is the floor cross-bar. That bar sits between the columns at ground level and is a real trip hazard for busy techs. It also prevents drive-through operation for long-bed pickups. Roll-in works fine but the tech has to walk over the cross-bar every time they move from front to rear of the vehicle. Common examples in our stock: the Rotary SPO10 baseplate configuration and the Challenger CL10-BP. Both are ALI Gold certified and mechanically equivalent to their overhead counterparts. For an Ankeny independent shop in a ceiling-constrained building, baseplate automotive two post lifts are absolutely the right answer.

Ceiling Height Is the Deal-Breaker for Overhead

The minimum ceiling for an overhead-style two-post with 82-inch rise is 12 feet. Some models need 12 feet 6 inches or 13 feet. Below 12 feet, the overhead cross-bar structure doesn’t fit under the ceiling with enough clearance for a full-height lift cycle.

Ankeny has a mix of shop buildings. The newer commercial developments built in the last 15 years typically have 14 to 16 foot ceilings – no issue with overhead. Older buildings, especially anything converted from residential garage or agricultural use, often have 10 to 11 foot ceilings that make overhead impossible. If you’re not sure what your ceiling clears, measure the actual clear height at the intended lift-bay location. Not the peak of the building. Not the highest point of a truss. The lowest fixed obstacle over the lift bay, which includes drop-down heaters, exposed conduit, sprinkler mains, and the bottom chord of any exposed truss. For overhead-style automotive two post lifts, we need at least 12 feet 6 inches of clear over the whole bay. If you have exactly 12 feet and no more, we go baseplate. If you have 13 feet, we go overhead. Between 12 and 13 feet is a case-by-case call based on the specific model and the vehicle mix. Floor Cross-Bar Trip Hazard on Baseplate

The floor cross-bar on a baseplate lift is a real ergonomic factor. It’s a steel channel about 3 inches tall running across the floor between the columns. Techs walk over it every time they cross from the driver side to the passenger side of the vehicle on the lift.

In a shop that runs 2,500 to 4,000 lift cycles a year, that’s a lot of stepping over. It’s fine for adult techs who know it’s there and are careful, but we’ve seen enough shins bark against that cross-bar to note that it’s a factor. On a busy CV axle bay where a tech is running back and forth between the axle and the toolbox, the trip hazard is a slower workflow. Rubber or steel cross-bar covers help. We include a rubber cross-bar cover on every baseplate install we do, which reduces the trip hazard significantly without impeding function. If you’re buying a used baseplate lift from another source, adding a cross-bar cover is $80 to $120 and worth every penny. For CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, the cross-bar also means you can’t easily roll a low creeper under the vehicle from either side. On overhead-style automotive two post lifts you can roll a creeper straight in. On baseplate, you have to lift the creeper over the cross-bar or approach from front or rear. This is a small thing but it adds up over a year of daily use.

Which One Is Better for CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work

For CV axle and half-shaft replacement specifically, overhead-style two-post lifts are the more productive choice when the building allows. Here’s why: CV axle work involves working under the vehicle between the front wheels, with the axle assembly coming out toward the tech. A creeper roll-in from either side of the vehicle speeds up the job.

On overhead-style lifts, the tech rolls the creeper straight in from either side, works, and rolls out. On baseplate, the tech has to lift the creeper over the cross-bar every time. Over a full year of CV axle work, that adds up to real time. The other factor: CV axle work needs the wheels fully off the ground with real drop under the axle. Both configurations lift to the same height, so that’s a wash. But the working-space clearance around the vehicle is subtly better on overhead because the arms don’t have to route around a floor cross-bar. For an Ankeny independent shop that’s committing a bay to CV axle and half-shaft work as a service line, our recommendation is overhead-style automotive two post lifts assuming ceiling height allows. If ceiling is limited, baseplate works too – we just plan the workflow around the cross-bar and add the rubber cover. Either way, spec the lift with capacity headroom for the vehicle mix. CV axle work often lives in the 6,000 to 9,000 lb vehicle weight range, so a 10K or 12K rated lift is the sweet spot.

Vehicle Weight and Capacity for Both Styles

Both overhead and baseplate two-post lifts come in the same capacity classes: 9,000 lb, 10,000 lb, 12,000 lb, 15,000 lb, and heavier. The engineering constraints on capacity don’t change based on configuration – it’s the column strength, the cylinder size, the cable diameter, and the arm design that determine capacity.

For an Ankeny independent shop doing CV axle and half-shaft work across a range of vehicles, a 10,000 or 12,000 lb capacity is usually right. The vehicles are cars, half-ton pickups, and mid-size SUVs – mostly under 6,500 lb, occasionally up to 8,500 lb. Where capacity matters: heavier vehicles need wider arm sweep and higher pad reach, which pushes toward 12K or 15K models regardless of configuration. If you’re seeing 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickups regularly, spec 15K in either configuration. The pricing between overhead and baseplate at the same capacity is nearly identical. A Rotary SPOA10 (overhead) and SPO10 (baseplate) are within $150 of each other at MAP. The decision between configurations is not driven by cost. Both configurations of automotive two post lifts are available with the same arm types – symmetric, asymmetric, and versymmetric – and the same pad options. Focus the overhead-vs-baseplate call on ceiling height and ergonomics, and make the arm and pad decisions based on vehicle mix.

Our Recommendation for an Ankeny Independent Shop

For an Ankeny independent pro shop adding a CV axle and half-shaft bay, our default recommendation is a Rotary SPOA10 overhead-style with 82-inch rise, asymmetric arms, and the low-profile pad option – assuming your ceiling clears 13 feet at the intended bay location. That gives you unrestricted floor space, drive-through capability for the occasional long-bed pickup, and enough capacity headroom for the full vehicle mix.
