A tire and alignment shop owner in Waterloo bought a corner lot with a mid-century block building on it, gutted the interior, and called us to help spec the new bays before he started framing walls. He was going to do tire and alignment during the day and take on restoration and metal work on his own project cars at night, and he wanted automotive two post lifts in the mechanical bays that would not become a source of headaches later. This safety walkthrough is the conversation we had with him, laid out in the order he made decisions, so any Waterloo or Cedar Valley shop owner facing a similar build-out has a reference.

Framing the Building Around the Lifts

Waterloo’s building had 11 foot 6 inch ceilings in the middle bay and 10 foot 8 inch ceilings along the outside walls. That is the kind of clearance where you can put automotive two post lifts in but only if you plan for it. We recommended demolishing a small drop-ceiling area over the two mechanical bays to bring the ridge clearance to 12 feet 4 inches, which opened the door to standard overhead configurations on both bays.

The alternative was baseplate, and baseplate would have worked, but the shop owner wanted the door swing wide open under the crossbar for his restoration work at night. Framing decisions like that are cheap in the demo phase and expensive after drywall goes up. If you are building out a bay for a lift, decide on overhead versus baseplate before the ceiling gets its final form. The building should serve the lift, not the other way around.

Slab Prep and Anchor Load Planning

The block building’s original slab was 4 inches, but there had been a machine footprint in the middle bay from a previous tenant that showed a repair patch. We told the Waterloo owner to overpour the two lift footprints with 6 inches of 4,000 PSI concrete tied into the existing slab with dowels. That gave both automotive two post lifts a first-class anchor bed and eliminated any question about the repair patch’s integrity.

The overpour cost less than $2,000 for both bays and it took two extra days on the concrete schedule. Compared to the alternative of finding out at year three that an anchor was pulling out of a marginal slab, that money is very well spent. If you are pouring new slab anyway, spec the lift zone tighter than the rest of the shop. It costs a few hundred dollars extra per bay and it removes the anchor question permanently.

Panel Capacity and Dedicated Circuits

Automotive two post lifts run on a 20 amp 220 volt dedicated circuit. The Waterloo shop had a 200 amp service and existing loads for compressors, tire changers, and shop lighting. The electrician ran the numbers and confirmed there was capacity for both lifts on dedicated circuits, plus an alignment machine, plus HVAC. If the numbers had not worked, the fix would have been a service upgrade to 400 amp, which is not cheap but is the right call for a building the owner plans to keep for decades.

Dedicated circuits matter for safety because a shared circuit can trip during a lift raise cycle and leave a vehicle at an awkward height. That is not dangerous if the safety locks engage, but it is an unnecessary event. Never run a lift on a shared circuit even if the amperage math technically works. The couple hundred dollars for a dedicated run is not the place to save money.

Fire Suppression and Egress Marking

Waterloo’s fire marshal wanted a specific extinguisher rating within a specific reach distance of the mechanical bays. That drove where the extinguisher mount went and it drove the egress markings on the floor. We walked the bay with the marshal before install to confirm the extinguisher was reachable from the lift operator position, and we marked the egress path with yellow safety tape on the floor.

Automotive two post lifts create a specific hazard: if a fire starts under a vehicle at working height, the tech has to get out fast and the vehicle needs to come down safely. A written procedure that says lower the vehicle if time allows, otherwise evacuate and cut power at the panel, is what the fire marshal wanted to see. We drafted it together and posted it on the column. That paperwork is the difference between a legal shop and a shop that gets a citation on the first inspection.

Restraints, Safety Locks, and the Weekly Check

Automotive two post lifts sold new in the United States come with gear-driven arm restraints and mechanical safety locks that engage automatically as the lift raises. Those are not optional and they are not features you should ever bypass. The Waterloo shop installed two new Challenger CL10 lifts with ALI certification stamps and the restraints and locks are standard on those models.

The weekly check is what keeps the safety systems honest. Every Monday morning the tech cycles each lift empty from full down to full up, listens for the safety locks engaging at each rest position, and lowers back through the locks. Any hesitation or noise gets logged. That five-minute check catches problems early. The alternative is finding out a lock has stopped engaging when a vehicle is on the lift, and that is the situation no shop wants.

Restoration Work After Hours

The Waterloo owner planned to do restoration and metal work on his own project cars at night after the shop closed. That is a common arrangement and it works, but it has safety implications the day-shop version does not. Working alone under a lifted vehicle at 10 PM is not the same as working under one at 2 PM with three other techs around. If something goes wrong, help is farther away.

Our advice to him was simple. If you are going to lift a car after hours, tell somebody. Text your wife or your business partner when the vehicle goes up and again when it comes down. Do not run the welder under a vehicle without a spotter present. If you have to grind or cut, drop the vehicle to working height on the mechanical stops rather than leaving it at chest height. These are habits, not rules, and they cost nothing. They also keep the shop safe when the shop is at its most vulnerable.

The Insurance Conversation and the Payoff

The last piece of the walkthrough was the insurance conversation. The Waterloo owner’s carrier wanted the ALI certification stamp on the automotive two post lifts, a certificate of professional installation, a copy of the written operating procedure, and confirmation of annual inspection scheduling. We provided all four documents in a folder at install completion, and the carrier raised the shop’s equipment limit without a premium bump.
