Pre-Use Inspection — the Sixty-Second Daily Check
Every shift on automotive two post lifts should begin with a sixty-second visual check. Walk both columns and look for oil weep at the cylinder gland, cable fray at the sheaves, arm-pad damage, floor cracks radiating from anchor bolts, and any bent or missing safety-lock components. Cycle the lift empty to full rise once — listen for the audible lock engagement at each stop position, then lower it back down. If anything sounds or looks off, tag the lift out.
The Cedar Rapids fleet manager instituted this as a written shift-start checklist after our walkthrough, and within the first month his techs caught a partially seized safety-lock pawl on one of the old lifts before it failed. That’s exactly the kind of catch a daily inspection is designed to make. The whole procedure takes less than a minute per lift, and it protects the tech, the vehicle, and the fleet manager from paperwork nobody wants to fill out. Every serious shop should build this into shift-start SOP.
Vehicle Positioning and Center-of-Gravity Verification
Positioning a vehicle correctly on automotive two post lifts starts with reading the manufacturer’s under-vehicle lift-point sticker. Almost every modern vehicle has one somewhere on the driver door jamb or under the hood. Those four points — two forward, two rearward of the wheelbase center — are where the arm pads must contact the frame. Padding anywhere else is misuse and voids the load rating.
Center of gravity is the second half of positioning. The vehicle’s CG should sit close to the geometric center of the four arm pads. For most passenger cars and light trucks that means the pinch welds we just described. For trucks with heavy front engines the CG can be slightly forward, and for cargo vans with rear-loaded storage it can be rearward. Rocking the lift a few inches off the ground before committing to full rise is the standard test — if the vehicle wants to pitch, reposition. The Cedar Rapids techs now teach this to every new hire on their first day, and it has eliminated the near-misses they’d been seeing on rear-loaded ambulances.
Arm Pad Contact — the Number-One Source of Drops
Every serious analysis of drops from automotive two post lifts comes back to arm-pad contact. Pads sitting on paint instead of steel, pads sitting on a plastic body cladding, pads sliding off a curved rocker — all of these show up in the incident data. The fix is boring: use the correct pad for the vehicle, confirm steel-on-steel or steel-on-hard-plastic contact, and never trust friction alone.
For fleet applications with mixed vehicles — sedans, pickups, cargo vans, ambulances — a good adapter kit is essential. Truck adapters with a captured pocket, tall pin adapters for vans with sub-frame cross members, and slim rubber pads for low-clearance sedans should all live within reach of the lift. The Cedar Rapids fleet already had an adapter box; we reorganized it and labeled each adapter with the vehicle types it fits. That single visual system dropped adapter-swap time by half and eliminated the guesswork that leads to bad pad placement in the first place.
Safety Lock Engagement and Audible Confirmation
Automotive two post lifts have mechanical safety locks that engage at multiple heights during rise and prevent free-fall in the event of hydraulic pressure loss. The lock system is the load-holding device — the hydraulic cylinder is only the lifting device. Techs must always work under the mechanical locks, never on hydraulic pressure alone. That means raising to the intended working height, then lowering the vehicle slightly onto the nearest engaged lock before entering the work zone.
The audible confirmation — a mechanical click as the pawl drops into the lock ladder — should happen at every rise increment. If you don’t hear the click, don’t work under the vehicle. Cedar Rapids’ old lifts had gotten sluggish enough that the click was intermittent; the fleet manager thought it was normal wear. It wasn’t. New lifts, or a properly serviced older lift, click every single time. We replaced both units and trained every tech to listen for the click as their final go/no-go check. That habit is the difference between a safe lift and a dangerous one.
Overhead Shut-Off Bar and Ceiling Clearance
Overhead-style automotive two post lifts include a shut-off bar across the top that stops the lift if a raised vehicle contacts it. That bar prevents the classic accident of a Super Duty crew cab punching through a ceiling light fixture. The shut-off bar height has to be set correctly during install, and it should be tested by hand every quarter to confirm it still trips the pump.
The Cedar Rapids shop had a suspended fluorescent fixture directly above one of the old lifts, and the previous vendor had bypassed the shut-off bar during install because it kept nuisance-tripping. That’s exactly the wrong fix. We removed the fixture entirely and rehung the overhead bar to the manufacturer spec. The tech who’d been dodging that fluorescent for years thanked us the day of install. Safety devices exist for a reason — bypassing them to solve a comfort problem creates a serious hazard. On any two-post install, the shut-off bar is non-negotiable.
Annual ALI-Certified Inspection Requirements
ALI and ANSI both require automotive two post lifts to be inspected annually by a qualified inspector. That inspection covers cable condition, cylinder function, lock ladder engagement, anchor torque, arm-restraint gear wear, and hydraulic oil quality. The inspection results in a written report and a sticker on the lift with the inspection date and inspector credentials.
For municipal fleets, annual inspection is often a policy requirement even where it isn’t a code requirement, because the workers’ comp carrier wants to see the paperwork. Cedar Rapids had let both lifts go ten-plus years between certified inspections — a real liability if anything had happened. We now run their annual inspection alongside the shop’s other equipment audits every March. The cost of the inspection is a small fraction of the annual maintenance budget and produces a document the fleet manager can show to any auditor who asks. Training a New Tech to Use the Lift Safely
Every new tech who touches automotive two post lifts should get a formal walkthrough on day one, not a shoulder-tap from a coworker. The walkthrough covers positioning, adapters, lock engagement, shut-off bar function, emergency lowering, and what to do if the lift behaves unexpectedly. Fifteen minutes of structured training saves years of unlearned bad habits.

New techs read it and initial it before their first use, and the same procedure is reviewed with the whole crew annually. That kind of documented training is exactly what OSHA wants to see, and it’s cheap insurance against the one incident that could shut down the shop.
