When we install automotive two post lifts in tire-and-alignment shops along the Iowa-Illinois corridor, the first conversation is almost never about the lift itself. It’s about the shop the lift is going into. A safe two-post install starts weeks before the truck backs up to your dock. It starts with the slab you’re pouring, the ceiling height you’re framing to, the panel amperage you’re reserving, and the workflow you’re planning around a bay that will hold a car six feet off the ground eight hours a day. The slab comes first: concrete specs before you order

Before we quote a two-post for a new tire-shop build, we ask the general contractor for the slab spec sheet. A 10,000 lb overhead two-post needs at least 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete under each column, and a 12,000 or 15,000 lb model wants 5 to 6 inches. That’s not a preference. That’s what the anchor manufacturer publishes for pullout resistance, and it’s what an ALI-certified installer will honor. Along the Iowa-Illinois corridor we still see shops pour a 4-inch fiber-mesh slab across the whole footprint, then realize during install that the bay corner sits over an old expansion joint or a plumbing chase.

If you’re framing the shop right now, spec the two-post pads oversized. We recommend a 12 foot by 14 foot dedicated pour for each bay running automotive two post lifts, at 6 inches thick, with #4 rebar on 12 inch centers tied one inch off the bottom. That gives you room to shift column locations two feet in either direction without pouring a new pad. It also lets you accept a 15,000 lb lift later without a demolition project when your customer mix drifts toward diesel pickups.

Ceiling height and column clearance in older Iowa buildings

A lot of the tire-and-alignment shops we outfit in Iowa and western Illinois are conversions of older buildings, warehouses, ex-implement dealers, machine sheds with 12 foot side walls. That side-wall number matters more than square footage. Standard clearfloor automotive two post lifts need a minimum ceiling height of 12 foot to reach full rise on a passenger car with the overhead safety bar clearing the roof. If you’re inside 11 foot 6, you’re either buying a low-ceiling variant with a different overhead beam geometry or you’re moving to a baseplate model.

Baseplate two-post lifts trade the overhead cross-tube for a floor plate that carries the equalizer cables between the columns. You lose the ability to open a door fully at full rise, and you pick up a tripping hazard right in the middle of your workflow. In a tire shop where techs are rolling floor jacks and tire dollies constantly, we recommend fixing the ceiling instead: raise the truss, sister in new rafters, or dedicate one lower-ceiling bay to a scissor. The overhead is the safer daily choice.

Electrical: 220V circuits and panel reservations

Every two-post we ship runs on single-phase 220V, and every one draws roughly 25 to 30 amps under load. A tire-and-alignment shop with two bays plus an alignment rack and a tire changer is going to eat panel capacity fast, and the sequencing question is whether your electrician runs dedicated home-runs to each column location before the drywall goes up. We tell owners to reserve a 40 amp double-pole breaker for each two-post bay, land a 6/3 romex from panel to column base, and stub out a disconnect within reach of the operator.

Do the wiring rough-in before the epoxy floor coating. That sounds obvious and it gets missed monthly. We’ve installed enough automotive two post lifts to know that once the floor is coated, cutting a chase for cable back to the panel becomes an ugly patch job that never quite matches. If you’re on three-phase power, tell us early. The 220V single-phase motor is the standard, but nearly every brand we carry has a 208V or 460V three-phase motor option that’s cheaper to run over the life of the lift.

Overhead versus baseplate for tire-shop workflow

Once ceiling clearance is settled, the next decision is arm geometry, and for a tire-and-alignment shop we push symmetrical over asymmetric almost every time. Symmetrical arms are equal length front and rear, which centers the vehicle between the columns. That’s what you want when a tech is walking around the bay with a torque wrench, a tire cart, and a set of alignment heads. Asymmetric setups rotate the columns 30 degrees and shift the vehicle rearward. Great for cracking a door open on a full-size sedan, worse for tire work because your walk-around is unbalanced.

Arm-restraint style matters too. Look for spring-loaded gear-and-pawl restraints that engage when the arm swings under the vehicle, not friction-only designs. In a busy tire bay a tech unlocks an arm 20 times a shift, and a positive-engagement restraint is the difference between a lift that stays ALI-compliant for 10 years and a lift that develops slop by year three. Every one of the automotive two post lifts we stock from Rotary and Challenger meets ALI Gold, and we won’t sell the ones that don’t.

Anchoring, torque, and grout: the boring details that matter

Install day is where safety-first stops being a slogan. When our crew sets a two-post, we drill 3/4 inch anchors into the cured slab, blow the holes clean, seat wedge anchors with a hammer, and torque to the exact spec on the anchor packaging, usually 90 to 110 ft-lb. Then we shim each column base flat within 1/8 inch across the base plate footprint and hand-tight the anchors before the final torque pass. Skip the shims and you’ll chase a lean forever.

Grout under the base plates is optional on smooth slabs, required on slabs that are more than 1/4 inch out of level across the column footprint. We carry non-shrink structural grout in the van because every fifth Iowa install needs it. Once anchors are torqued, we test-cycle the lift empty three times, then run a mid-height stop under a shop truck to seat the cables. The automotive two post lifts we install this way don’t come back for adjustment for years. That’s the whole point of doing anchor torque with a calibrated wrench instead of a breaker bar and a guess.

Daily maintenance that keeps the lift ALI-compliant

Once the lift is in and the tire shop is running, the safety walkthrough shifts from install to daily use. Every morning the opening tech should walk both columns, cycle the lift empty from floor to full rise, listen for equalizer-cable slip at the top of stroke, and drop it back down under load-test. That’s a 90-second routine. Weekly, they should grease the arm pivots and the sliding-carriage guides with a lithium grease. Monthly, check hydraulic-oil level with the lift fully lowered and top off with AW32.

Annually, ALI requires a certified inspection by a qualified inspector, and in most Iowa counties the shop’s insurance carrier will ask for that sticker at renewal. We coordinate that inspection for every set of automotive two post lifts we install, and we stock the replacement equalizer cables, cable sheaves, arm-restraint gears, and hydraulic hoses to fix whatever the inspector flags. Owner training and shop sign-off before you open

The last step before we hand over a bay is the operator training. We walk every tech through a two-hour session at the shop: safe loading with vehicle center-of-gravity, arm swing and positive-engagement restraints, safety-lock engagement at the top and mid-height, controlled lowering, emergency-descent procedure, and the annual ALI inspection cycle. Each tech signs off on the training log, and that log stays in the shop safety binder for the insurance carrier and any OSHA inquiry.

We also leave a printed lockout-tagout sheet at each set of automotive two post lifts. Lockout-tagout on a two-post is straightforward, disconnect at the wall, tag the disconnect, verify by cycling the up button, but writing it down keeps it consistent shift to shift.
