A dealership service manager in eastern Nebraska asked us last quarter to sit down with the fixed-operations team and walk through the technical specs on automotive two post lifts before they signed off on a service-drive expansion. The dealership was adding four bays to handle daily maintenance volume on an aging service-loaner fleet, and the fixed-ops director wanted real dimensions, not brochure numbers. He wanted column-to-column measurements, drive-thru width, arm reach at full retract and full extension, and financing terms that matched a fiscal year on a September-to-August cycle. Here’s the deep dive we gave them, and here’s how it changed the bay layout.

Column-to-column width for a dealership service bay

The measurement that matters most on automotive two post lifts in a dealership service bay is column-to-column drive-thru width. On a Rotary SPO10 clearfloor, inside-column to inside-column is 100 inches. On a Challenger CL10V3, it’s 103 inches. On a 12K Rotary SPOA10, it’s 100 inches with the drive-thru narrowed slightly by asymmetric column geometry. Those are the actual usable numbers, not the marketing footprint. For a dealership taking Silverados, Yukons, and Escalade ESVs on the daily service drive, 100 inches inside clearance is workable but tight.

For fleet trucks and dually pickups, we recommend a 12K asymmetric with 108-inch inside clearance. That upgrade adds about 12 percent to the lift cost but eliminates the annual door-ding claims from a Silverado 3500 crew cab opening its rear passenger door into a column. Multiply one $600 paint claim by four bays and it pays for the upgrade in year one. This is the kind of number a fixed-ops director cares about that isn’t on the brochure.

Ceiling height and full-rise clearance

Full-rise on standard-height automotive two post lifts puts the arm-cup surface at 71 to 74 inches above the slab. Adding a 5-foot-8 tech standing under a vehicle, plus the vehicle itself, minimum ceiling clearance for a clearfloor overhead lift is 12 foot 0 for a passenger car and 12 foot 6 for a full-size SUV. If the dealership is planning any diesel pickup work with a service-body upfit, ceiling clearance needs to be 13 foot 0 or the lift won’t reach top-of-stroke without the overhead bar kissing the roof.

Tall column variants exist. Rotary sells an extended-height SPO10 that adds 12 inches of full-rise. Challenger has a similar extension package. Both add roughly $400 to $600 per lift. For a Nebraska dealership adding four bays, we’d spec two standard-height bays for cars and two extended-height bays for pickups and SUVs. That gives the fixed-ops team flexibility to route heavy trucks to the bays that fit them, and it prevents a Ford Super Duty from getting stuck on a lift it shouldn’t be on.

Arm reach at full retract and full extension

Arm dimensions are the second technical layer of the deep-dive. Standard three-stage arms on a 10K Rotary SPO10 retract to 30 inches and extend to 48 inches, measured from column centerline to the arm cup at each end. Triple-telescoping arms retract to 24 inches and extend to 60 inches. For dealership work on modern crossovers with 108-inch wheelbases and short overhangs, triple-telescoping arms are the right spec. The extra reach handles crew-cab pickups without swinging the arms out to their limit and stressing the pivot gears.

Arm restraint style matters at fleet volume. The automotive two post lifts we spec for dealerships all use spring-loaded gear-and-pawl restraints that engage automatically when the arm swings under a vehicle. Techs unlock 40 to 60 arms per bay per week at dealership volume, and a positive-engagement restraint stays tight for a decade of that duty cycle. Friction-only restraints wear out at 18 months. For a fleet install, restraint gear replacement kits go on the shop parts shelf on day one, and we stock them same-day.

Motor, hydraulics, and utility panel sizing

Each automotive two post lifts unit on a dealership bay draws 25 to 30 amps under load on 220V single-phase. Four bays therefore need 160 amps of reserved panel capacity minimum, plus dedicated 40-amp breakers per bay. If the dealership is running three-phase 208V or 480V service to the building, spec three-phase motors instead. Three-phase pulls less amperage per bay (12 to 15 amps at 208V), runs cooler, and lasts longer. Motor upgrade cost is about $150 per lift, ROI is at year six on electricity savings alone.

Hydraulic-oil capacity per lift is roughly 3 gallons of AW32. We spec a shared 15-gallon shop drum on a delivery cart so the fixed-ops team can top off any of the four bays without stocking individual jugs at each column. Reservoir top-off happens quarterly at dealership volume, and we set a shop reminder to check reservoir level on the last Friday of each quarter. A leaking cylinder shows up as a low reservoir long before it shows up as a lift that won’t hold pressure overnight.

Fiscal-year financing on a dealership cycle

Fleet financing on automotive two post lifts for a dealership works differently than owner-op financing. We coordinate with the dealership’s captive finance arm or with First Business for a 12-month 0% APR arrangement on a September-to-August fiscal cycle. Take delivery of four lifts in September, defer first payment 90 days into December, pay off across 12 months ending the following August. Total capital outlay for four 12K asymmetric extended-height lifts with triple-telescoping arms and installation runs $32,000 to $38,000 depending on brand.

Extended terms of 24 or 36 months are available at 6 to 9 percent through the same lender if the dealership is bundling in a tire changer, wheel balancer, alignment rack, and lube-service equipment. For an expansion that hits $75,000 or more in total capex, 36-month terms usually match the depreciation schedule the accounting team uses. We work with the dealership controller directly on the paperwork. Approval turnaround is usually five business days once the credit application and financial statements are in.

Anchor pattern and slab prep for four bays

Anchor pattern on a Rotary SPO10 is eight 3/4-inch wedge anchors per column, four per column on the CL10V3. Anchor pullout resistance requires 4.25-inch minimum concrete depth at 3,000 PSI. For a dealership building four new bays, we require the slab be poured 6 inches thick with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, plus a 12×14 foot dedicated pad under each set of columns. That gives the anchors the concrete they need and gives you room to relocate columns two feet in either direction if the shop layout changes.

Slab surface finish matters for arm restraint reliability. A polished-concrete finish under the base plates lets the base sit flat. A broom finish or a heavy epoxy coating adds high spots that push the base plate 1/8 inch out of true, and that shows up as arm-restraint gear misalignment over time. Total cost of ownership on a 10-year window

The fixed-ops director asked us for a 10-year TCO number on the four-bay install. Purchase price, install, financing interest, annual ALI inspection, expected wear-part replacement, and estimated hydraulic-oil consumption. On four 12K extended-height automotive two post lifts the number lands in the $45,000 to $52,000 range across 10 years, or roughly $1,100 to $1,300 per bay per year. That’s the number to compare against the revenue those four bays generate.

At dealership service-drive volume, each bay handles 12 to 18 ROs per day. Even at a conservative $150 average RO with 60 percent labor content, one bay generates $250,000 to $350,000 of labor revenue per year. The lift is 0.4 percent of that revenue.
